BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,668, dated November 2'7, 1888.

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. SOHELL- INGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Shelton, in the county of Fairfield and State of Oonnecticut,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification. and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved buckle, showing a strap in position before clamped. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the strap clamped. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, in which the sleeve hereinafter described is more clearly disclosed. Fig.4 is a plan view; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a buckle open, the material to be clamped being shown passed through it in dotted lines.

Similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several figures.

Myinvention has relation to buckles(preferably constructed of wire) for harness or for other purposes in which a buckle is required; and it consists in constructing a buckle in such a manner that while simple and light in construction it will perform its duties in an efficient manner.

To this end my invention consistsin the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the body portion of the buckle, formed with the eye B for the attachment of a hook or other device, and having its side portions formed with shoulders C, while the forward portion,D,is provided with a partly-open sleeve, E, whose parallel overlapping edges are serrated, as shown at F in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4. The sleeve E fits aroundv the front portion of the buckle and holds the ends together,

while the overlapping edges extend outward and engage with the material to be secured in the buckle.

To the forward shoulders, O, is pivoted a bail, G, which, when clamped, extends with its forward straight portion, H, slightly in advance of the overlapping edges of the sleeve.

In operation, a harness or Suspender strap is passed between the forward body portion of the buckle and the forward straight portion of the swinging bail, as shown in Fig. 1, which bail is then clamped firmly upon the strap, by swinging it do nwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, forcing the serrated edges of the partly-open sleeve into the strap. After the strap has been clamped its free end is passed through the space or elongated open eye formed by the rear shoulders of the body of the buckle, as clearly shown, thus enabling the eye B to be at all times above the strap, which will permit of the hook being attached more readily than if this eye were beneath the strap, as will be readily understood.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages and operation of this invention will be understood, without requiring an extended explanation.

What I claim is The combination, with a body portion, A, of a buckle having a straight front portion, D, of a partly-open sleeve, E, upon the portion D, having parallel overlapping serrated jaws projecting outward and a bail pivot-ally secured to the body, and having a straight forward portion which extends slightly in advance of the straight portion D of the body of the buckle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
