COMBINED STEP-LADDER AND IRONING-BOARD.

:ESPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,591, dated November 27, 1838.

,ie it known that I, PHILESTER SMITH, of

' Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Folding Step- Ladder and Ironing-Board, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accomphnying draw- 1ngs.

The object of my invention is to produce a combined folding step-ladder and ironingboard, the same being hereinafter fully described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to thedrawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device when in the form of a step-ladder; Fig. 2,a view of the same, seen as indicated by arrow .1: in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan viewed as indicated by arrow 1 in Fig. 1,parts being omitted; Fig. 4, a side elevation of the device when in the form of an ironing-board, two positions being shown by full and dotted lines; Fig. 5,a view of the device when folded, seen in the direction in which Fig. 4 is seen; and Fig. (i, a view of the dcvice,takeu as indicated by arrow in Fig. 5, parts being broken away and omitted.

Referring to the parts shown in the drawings, 'A is a tapering board forming the ironing-board proper of the device, and also a main leg or support when the device is used as a step-ladder.

D are secondary legs pivoted to the main legs B at a, which pivot also passes through the braces O. The secondary legs D are provided with cross-bars b b and the mainlegs are provided with cross-bars c c, which together form a series of steps for the ladder.

E is a folding pail rest or shelf pivoted to the main legs at d, to be turned out horizontally, as shown in Fig. 1, it being formed with two separated horizontal slats, e a, with a space, f, between. When the device is made up for an ironing-board, the pail-rest is folded beneath,as shown in Fig. 4. The upper inclined ends of the legs B are inserted under the rest 9, as stated, aclalnping bail or holder, 71, being attached to the legs in position to be turned over the head-block g, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which prevents the legs moving from their position. In the ironingboard form of the devicethe bail may or not be used, as thought best.

(Shown in Fig. 4.) By shifting the tie to different notches the ironing-board is raised or lowered, as indicated.

a is a cross-bar secured to the under side of the board A in position to form a rest for the shelf E. This bar is held by a single central fastener, 0, so as to have a swivel movement. The parts of the shelf are so proportioned that when the device is folded, as shown in Fig. 5, the bar it comes in thespace f between the slats c e of the shelf, which admits of the device being more closely folded.

p is a bar similar to the bar muea-r the other end of the board, which bars form holders for the ironing sheet or cloth placed upon the ironing-board when used to iron upon, the ends of said bars being sprung away from the board by hand for the purpose of receiving the edge, of said sheet or cloth.

The bar a is provided with a button, r, which, when turned to cross the slats c e, as shown in Fig. 6, serves to hold the device in its folded form. When the device is folded, the bail h, when extended, serves as a hanger for hanging the device by. The legs B B are tied at their lower ends by a rigid bar, 8. \Vhen the device is in the form of a step-ladder, the legs 13 B cannot, on account of the construction of the parts, spread or move at their lower ends away from the board A,on ac count of which the tie i is not then needed.

What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a combined step-ladder and ironing board, a board for ironing upon constituting a principal support for the stcp-ladder, in

combination with main supporting legs and braces connected by pivotal bearings to said board and said respective main legs, the upper ends of said main legs having bearings 5 against said board, and a holder for keeping them in place, substantially as shown and described.

2, A step-ladder formed with a board constituting a single rigid leg, in combination 10 with separated main legs and braces pivoted to said board and said respective main legs, the latter having rests against said board, a holder for said main legs, a folding shelf pivoted to said Inain legs, and a support for said shelf, 15 the floor of said shelf being divided or formed with an opening, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

.3. A step-ladder formed with a board constituting a single rigid leg, in combination with separated main legs and braces pivoted 20 to said board and said respective main legs, the latter having rests against said board, a clamping bail or holder for said main legs, a shelf pivoted tosaid main legs, and a support for said shelf, substantially as described and 2 shown.
