PL PETERS. PMfi-Lhhognpher, Washington. D- ll UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN KNELL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGN TO \VHITCI-IER & EMERY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED SHOE-MAKERS PINCHERS AND HAMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,014, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed July 22, 1880. Renewed May 18, 1888. Serial No. 274,235. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN KNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, In the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and use- "ul Improvements in a Combined Shoe-Makers Pinchers and Hammer, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. V
.The object of my invention is to furnish a I combined shoe-makers pinehers and hammer which will be particularly adapted for lasting.
' My invention consists in combining with a pair of pinehers a hammer which will be carried 1 on the lowerjaw of the pinehers in such a manner that it will yield vertically when struck, and also be capable of a rotary motion on its axis,in order to always strike the tack a square blow.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved pinehers and hammer, and Fig. 2 is a central sectional elevation of the hammer and the pin upon which it is carried.
A is the upper and B the lower jaw of a 25 pair of shoe-makers pinehers.
O is a pin projecting from the lower jaw, B. D is the hammer, which consists of a cylindrical piece of steel bored out to receive the pin,and a cushion,E, which is placed under the 0 pin and which is made of rubber or 0t some other elastic material.
F is an annular groove cut in the pin O,and G- are screws passing through the hammer D and entering groove F. Of these screws there are preferably three, and their diameter .is some- 5 what less than the width of the groove F. The screws do not bear against the pin 0, but merely enter the groove F and prevent the hammer from falling off the pin 0.
The cushion E forms a spring, and the ham- 4c mer being loose it will adaptitself to all positions of the tack, and every blow struck will be a square one. The bottom of the hammer may be roughcned,as usual. \Vith a hammer as ordinarily arranged there are always more 4 5 r or less glancing blows struck, and hence there is always more or less timelostby withdrawing bent tacks or nails.
Having thus described my-invention,Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 0 1. The combination, in a hammer, of the head, a pin upon which the head is mounted, and a cushion, and devices, as described, for securing said head to said pin,all substantial] y as and for the purposes set forth. 5 5
2. The combination, with the pinehers A B, of the pin 0 with the annular groove F, the hammer D, cushion E, and screws G, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 60 the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN KNELL.
