Abstract

A bearing device for the top of a ladder which fits over a top end of a ladder to provide a mar-proof protection for the surface against which the ladder rests. The device is fitted with a hollow section of a size to slip over a ladder end, and covered on its external resting surface with soft material such as carpeting.

Patent Dec. 30, 1975 Plays FIG.4
LADDER BEARING PLATE SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION My invention is a rigid, bearing plate device, the external surface of which is cushioned which is shaped to fit over the top end of a ladder.
The advantage of my invention is that it protects the external surface upon which the top of an equipped ladder rests.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING The objects and features of the invention may be understood with reference to the following detailed description of an illustrative embodiment of the invention, taken together with the accompanying drawing in which:
FIG. 1 illustrates a perspective view of the invention in use;
FIG. 2 illustrates a perspective view of the invention;
FIG. 3 illustrates a front view of the invention;
FIG. 4 illustrates a plan view of the invention; and
FIG. 5 illustrates a side view of the invention.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT:
Turning now descriptively to the drawing, in which similar reference characters denote similar elements throughout the several views, FIG. 1 shows ladder 11 equipped with the bearing plate fitted on each top ladder end 21, resting against a wall 19. As shown in FIGS. 2-5, the bearing plate 10 is formed in the shape of a rectangular sheet metal hollow sleeve 12, whose inside dimensions are slightly larger than the outside dimensions of the top end 21 of the ladder 11. A thumb screw 13 is threaded into a hole 14 on one side 23 of sleeve 12 so as to bear in the installed position against a side of the ladder end 21.
A back sheet 16 is integrally fastened to the device 10 with the external surface 26 of back sheet 16 fitted with cushioning or carpeting material. The plane of the back sheet 16 is at an angle to the axis of the hollow 27 of the sleeve section 12 so that the back sheet 16 will lie parallel and against a wall 19 that the ladder 11, in the erect position, rests against.
Since obvious changes may be made in the specific embodiment of the invention described herein, such modifications being within the spirit and scope of the invention claimed, it is indicated that all matter contained herein is intended as illustrative and not as limiting in scope.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A bearing support device of a shape to fit over and completely about the top end section of a ladder rail, said device shaped in the form of a rectangular frame fitted with an external cushioned back surface on a back plate that serves as a bearing surface against a vertical surface upon which the rail of an equipped ladder rests in the erect condition, said cushioned back acting to protect the said vertical surface from disfigurement,
said frame formed with an internal recess of rectangular cross-section, open at both opposed ends, the cross-section of said recess of a size such that the frame fits completely about the top end section of a ladder rail, with the sides of said frame fastened to the back plate which is oriented at an angle to the axis of a ladder rail fitted in the recess of the frame, said back plate extending transversely from said frame, together with a male threaded member engaged in a threaded hole in a side of the frame, said threaded member serving as a clamping means to fix the frame to the side of a ladder rail in the installed position.

Claims (1)

1. A bearing support device of a shape to fit over and completely about the top end section of a ladder rail, said device shaped in the form of a rectangular frame fitted with an external cushioned back surface on a back plate that serves as a bearing surface against a vertical surface upon which the rail of an equipped ladder rests in the erect condition, said cushioned back acting to protect the said vertical surface from disfigurement, SAID FRAME FORMED WITH AN INTERNAL RECESS OF RECTANGULAR CROSSSECTION, OPEN AT BOTH OPPOSED ENDS, THE CROSS-SECTION OF SAID RECESS OF A SIZE SUCH THAT THE FRAME FITS COMPLETELY ABOUT THE TOP END SECTION OF A LADDER RAIL, WITH THE SIDES OF SAID FRAME FASTENED TO THE BACK PLATE WHICH IS ORIENTED AT AN ANGLE TO THE AXIS OF A LADDER RAIL FITTED IN THE RECESS OF THE FRAME, SAID BACK PLATE EXTENDING TRANSVERSELY FROM SAID FRAME, TOGETHER WITH A MALE THREADED MEMBER ENGAGED IN A THREADED HOLE IN A SIDE OF THE FRAME, SAID THREADED MEMBER SERVING AS A CLAMPING MEANS TO FIX THE FRAME TO THE SIDE OF A LADDER RAIL IN THE INSTALLED POSITION.
