Description

UNITED STATES XVILLIAM S. SHARPNEOK,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF DENVER, COLORADO.
JOURNAL-BOX.
SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters'Patent N 0. 392,465, dated November 6, 1888.
Application filed November 7, 1887. Renewed August 25, 1888. Serial No. 283.792.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. SHARP- NECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anti-Friction J ournal-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a journal-box constructed according to my improvement; Fig. 2, atransverse section through the line 00 x in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a part detached, onalarger scale.
This invention relates to an improvement on the j ournal-box shown in my allowed application,No. 228,374 .filed February 21, 1887 5 and it consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combinations of parts, hereinafter more particularly described, and then definitely pointed out in the claims.
Referring now to the details of construction, A represents the case, provided with a hinged cap, a, carrying a disk, B, and balls I) to receive the end-thrust of the axle O, as shown in my said application,No. 228,37 4. Surrounding the axle is a series of hollow rollers, D, having in each a series of smaller rollers, E, arranged around a central pin,F, the ends of which enter separating-washers G, forming a kind of cage,
as fully shown and described in my aforesaid" application. Resting on these rollers is a box, H, (see Fig. 3,) having ateach end a circular groove,h, and a preferably angular or flattened V-shaped groove, h, on its top. In each of these circular grooves is one or more balls, I, which bear against the vertical edge of the groove and the outer faces of the separatingwashers G.
Inthe angular top groove, h, is a roller, J, extending transversely of the box and working insaid groove h, and a groove, to, of corresponding shape in the under side of the top of the casing A. By this arrangement the weight (No model.)
proper position also without the necessity of 0 any groove in the rolls or bead on the shaft, as
in my aforesaid application, which practice has been shown to be somewhat obj ectiouable.
Other equivalent devices may be used in lieu of the balls I and roller J, such as balls in place of the roll J, and tapering rolls in lieu ofthe balls I; but I prefer the devices shown. I should, however, consider the use of tapering rolls in place of said balls I,and ballsin lieu of the roller J, as equivalent devices for those I cmploy, and intend to be understood as claiming the same in the following claims.
What I claim as new is-.
1. Thecombination, with an axle, of a box and casing for the same, provided with correspondinginclincd-sided grooves at right angles to said axle, and a roller setin said grooves, and the grooves shaped to normally retain the roller in one position therein, substantially as described.
2.. The combination, with a shaft,of a box for the same,a set of rolls surrounding the shaft, and balls at each end of said rolls,to retain them in their proper relative positions, as set forth.
3. The combination, with a shaft, of a set of anti-friction rolls surrounding the same, a box resting on said rolls, having downwardly-projecting ends, provided with circular grooves in said ends, and balls in said grooves, all constructed and arranged substantially as described. In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 5th day of November, 1887.
