SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,182, dated November 6, 1888.

Application filed July 5, 1888.

.To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 'we, HENRY CARTER and LOUISE AUGUSTIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Pontiac, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slop-Pails or Oommodes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in slop-pails or commodes for use in sick-rooms for invalids, or for prison use where portable commodes have to be provided.

Our invention consists in the peculiar con struction, arrangement, and combination of the parts, whereby all sanitary requirements are complied with, while at the same time the article is very simple in its construction and can be manufactured by ordinary skilled workmen, all as more fully hereinafter described.

A is a pail of ordinary construction-such as found in the market for water or slop pailsand this is provided with the usual bail or handle, B. Apail of this kind we provide upon two opposite sides, near the top, with the spring-catches O, the hooked ends D of which are brought to a level with the top edge of the pail, suitable notches being provided to this end in the topedge of the pail to allow the free movement of the spring.

E are suitable handles on thesespring-catches for the purpose of operating them.

F is the seat of thecommode, and this is made to fit within the top of the pail to make it level therewith, a suitable shoulder, G, being formed near the top of the pail to rest the seat thereon, and recesses H are formed on top of the seat for the purpose of allowing the hooked ends D of the spring-catches to engage therein and secure the seat removably upon the top of the pail.

By good workmanship in constructing this device a tight fitt'ing cover can be easily obtained, which will prevent any disagreeable odors from finding their way out if the cover is kept closed; and, to prevent the wood from being stained or tainted, the inside should be liberally varnished or covered with some water-proof paint or tar.

If desired, a vessel of porcelain, metal, or other material may be placed inside of the pail.

It will be seen that, the parts being so readily, detached merely by drawing on the handles E of the catches, the device can be kept scrupulously clean without any difficulty, and if the device becomes foul it can be renewed, in part or in whole, without any expense, as the pail is of such description as can be found in the market anwhere. To make the device less conspicuous in the room, a little upholstering on the top cover and other disguising means practiced by the ordinary housewife will readily transform the article into a piece of furniture deprived of every unsightly feature, if occasion should require.

For prison or other use the device, if not used for a commode, is not in any way rendered unserviceable, as by taking the seat and cover off the ordinary pail is intact and fit for use, as before. 7

That we claim as our invention is 1. The combination of the pail, the springcatches secured thereto upon opposite sides near the top, and the seat removably retained within the top by the spring-catches and seated therein on an annular shoulder, and the cover secured to the seat and having the hinged and stationary portion, substantially as described.
