UNITED STATES PATENT which...
BARNHARD SOHAD, OF BATAVIA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF FIVESIXTHS TO JOSEPH O. SHULTS, FRANK J. SHULTS, LEVANT M. HAOKLEY, AND LOUIS E. SMITH, ALL OF SAME PLACE.
BROOM HOLDER OR SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,429, dated October 23, 1888.
Application filed May 19, 1887.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARNHARD SOHAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Batavia, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom Holders or Supports; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled [o in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to broom holders or supports; and it-has for its object to simplify and cheapen and render more efficient in operation this class of devices.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the combination and the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, and then particularly defined by the claim.
I provide one arm or jaw with ears or lugs, by which and suitable securing means it may be secured in place, a likejaw being pivoted to said arm, and a spring being provided for keeping said jaws normally closed.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved support in position for use, and Fig. 2 represents the parts composing the same detached, but in their relative positions.
Referring now to the details of the drawings, A designates an arm having cast integral therewith or firmly secured thereto an ear or lug or lugs, a, provided with suitable openings to receive the screws or other retaining means by which it is secured in place on the wall or other suitable position. These lugs or ears are preferably formed at substantially the longitudinal center of the arm, in order to form a better support for the same and prevent displacement in use, as would be Serial No. 238,750. (No model.)
liable to occur if the securing means were situated near one end. Ata point just be yond the union of the arm and lugs the arm is formed with an inwardly-projecting ear, I), and from this ear to the end of the arm the said arm is broadened and curved, as shown, with its extreme end 0 inclined outwardly, for a purpose hereinafter described. 5
B is ajaw or arm similar'in many respects to the arm A and pivoted thereto by the pin d, passed through the ear I) on the arm A and the similar ear 0 on the arm B, the said ears being halved out, as shown.v The opposite 6o ends of the arms are shown as provided with openings f, and in these openings are placed the ends 9 ofa spring, 0, which in the present instance is shown as formed of a single piece of wire coiled at its center, as shown at h, and its ends 9 extended at substantially right angles to the length of the body of the spring.
In practice, the device being secured to the wall, as indicated, the handle of the broom is inserted between the mouth-like end of the jaws, which will readily yield to allow the passage of the handle, and as soon as pressure is relieved from the-handle the spring causes the jaws to grasp the said handle with a firm hold. To remove the broom, it is only neces- 7 sary to pull it endwise, when it is easily withdrawn from the jaws. By the peculiar con struction shown it matters not at what angle the broom may be inserted into the mouth of the holder it will be sure to be held fast.
WVhile I have referred to my hold er and have shown it as applied to a broom, I do not intend to limit myself to such use, as it may be advantageously employed for holding other articles-such as mop-handles, paintbrushes, and the like.
Having described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within broom-holder, composed of the 0 arm A, provided with the laterally-extending lugs a, inwardly-extending ear 1) below said lugs, and having its lower end broadened, curved, and inclined, as shown, in combina tion with the arm 13, provided with the in- In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in wardly-extending ear 6, and having; its lower presence of two witnesses.
end broadened, curved, and inclined, as shown,
and the spring 0, having the coil h and its BARNHARD SOHAD.
5 arms extended and bent at their upper ends and passed through holes in the ends of arms Witnesses: A and B, all substantially as and for the pnr- JOHN G. J OHNSON, poses described. Crms. LA FOUNTAIN.
