ANTl-RATTLER FOR THILL-COUPLINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,166, dated October 16, 1888,
Application filed June 30, 1888.
To LLZZ whom may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES LEE and CHARLEY L. LEE, citizens of the United States, residing at Burbank, in the county of Vayne, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements i n Anti-Rattlers for Thill- Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to an anti-rattler for thill-couplers; and the objects in view are to provide a simple and inexpensive device applicable to the various sizes and styles of couplings whereby the shackles which connect the thills and axle are prevented from rattling and are held snugly in position, which device is capable of easy application and withdrawal from the coupling.
Other objects and advantages of the inven tion will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a thillveoupling provided with an anti-rattler constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan, and Fig. 3 is a detail, in side elevation, of the Y-shaped ad- `insting-bolt.
Like numerals indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 represents the front axle of a vehicle, upon which is mounted at their side a clip, 2, the ends of which terminate in screw-threaded lugs 6, upon which is mounted a perforated tie-plate, 4, held snugly in position by means of nuts 5. From the front face of the clip 2 there project lateral parallel arms 6, the forward ends of which are oppositely bored for the passage therethrough of a bolt, 7, having a head, 8, at one end and a nut, 9, at the 0pposite end. Upon this bolt is mounted, for partial rotation, the usual thill-iron, 10, from which projects the shank-iron 11, and to which the thill 12 is secured.
13 represents a semi-elliptic dat spring, the forward end of which is curved, as at 14, on the arc of a circle and adapted to lit a portion of the cylindrical surface of the thill-iron 10. The spring is then continued to the rear and Serial No. 278,659. (No model.)
bent, as at 15, and abuts against the tie-plate 4, intermediate the nuts 5. The spring 13 is supported in position by means of a Y-shaped bolt, 15, having the screw-threaded stem 17 at its lower end and the upper divergent arms, 18, terminating in angular heads or shoulders 19, disposed in opposite directions to each other. This Y-shaped bolt is inserted between the curved portion 14 of the spring and the clip 2, so that its shoulders 19 rest one upon each of the opposite bars 6, the depending shank portion 17 of said bolt passing through an opening, 20, formed in the spring 13, and provided at its extremity with a thumb-nut,21.
Taking the parts as described and as shown in Fig. 1, it is only necessary, in order to increase the tension of therspring 13 against the thill-iron 10, to run the screw 21 up the Y- shaped bolt 16. This causes the curved portion 14 of said spring to press the thill-iron snugly against the bolt 7 and prevent rattling of the parts as they become worn, and yet at the same time permit the thill-iron to work sufciently free upon the bolt for all ordinary purposes.
Having described our invention and its 0peration, whatwe claim is- 1. The combination, in a thillconpling having opposite lateral arms, of a semi-elliptic spring having a curved thill-iron-cmbracing portion, and a Y-shaped bolt having a screwthreaded end and divergent arms adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the lateral arms,
substantially as specified.
2. The axle l, in combination with the clip 2, tie-plate 4, and nutsv, having the lateral arms 6, bolts 7, thill-iron 10, and shank 11, the spring 13, curved as at 14 and bent as at 15, and the Y-shaped bolt 16, having the screw threaded end 17, arms 18, shoulders 19, and the nut 21, substantially as specified.
