Description

L. J. ANGER.
SHOW BOX FOR ORAGKERS.
No. 390,548. Patented 0011.2 1888;
UNITED STATES EEicE.
PATENT LOUIS J. ANGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ANGER BROTHERS, OF SAME PLACE.
SHOW-BOX FOR CRACKERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,548, dated October 2, 1888.
Application filed August 10, 1888. Serial No. 282,423. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, Louis J. ANGER, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Cracker Show-Boxes, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in boxes used for packing and displaying crackers and like articles; and the object of my in in vention is to provide a new and improved attractive front for such boxes, which front is simple in construction, strong, durable, and cheap.
This invention consists in the construction i5 and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cracker-box provided with myimprovement. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, two corner pieces being omitted. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line :0 as, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an inside view of one of the corners. Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
At the front of the box the metal forming the top, bottom, and sides of said box is bent over in the usual manner to form interior 3o flanges, A, against, in the inner surface of which, the glass front B can rest. For the purpose of ornamenting said front flanges, A, I apply on the flange A, at top and bottom and each side, a sheet-brass strip, B, provided at its inner edge with a longitudinal pocket, 0, for receiving the edge of the flange A, and on the outer edge with a flange, D, that can rest upon the top, bottom, or side surfaces of the box, said strips B being soldered to the 0 flanges A. As shown in Fig. 2, said strips B are cut off square at their ends, and do not ex tend to the angles formed by the flanges A, but terminate a short distance from said angles. For the purpose of finishing the corners i 5 of the front of the box I use corner-pieces E, which are made L-shaped, and have flanges on the inner and outer edges. These cornerpieces E are applied on the corners of the front of the box in such a manner that their ends overlap the ends of the strips B, as shown in 0 dotted lines in Fig. 2, and then said cornerpieces are soldered in place. The corner-pieces being made of a single piece of metal and not mitered at the angle, they thus serve to strengthen the box at those parts where it is 5 most apt to breaknamely, at the angles. By using the angle-pieces in the manner described the expense and labor of carefully mitering the ornamental front strips, B, are also avoided, and thus the cost of the entire box is reduced materially.
Having thus described my invention,lclain1 as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with asheets-metal box having an opening in one side and flanges along the edges of said openings, of sheet metal strips applied on the outer faces of said flanges and L-shaped cornerpieces applied to the corners and overlapping the ends of the above mentioned strips, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a sheet-metal box having an opening in one side and internal flanges along the edges of said opening, of strips applied on the outer surfaces of said flanges, and provided on their inner edges with flanges lapping on the inner surfaces of the box-flanges and on their outer edges with flanges lapping on the outer surfaces of the box, and L-shaped flanged corner-pieces apto plied on the corners of the flanges and overlapping the ends of the strips applied on the faces of said flanges, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS J. ANGER.
