E. JONES.
PUNGHING AND SHEARING MACHINE.

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
ELI JONES, OF VALLEY SPRINGS, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
PUNCHING AND SHEABING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,655, dated September 18, 1888.
Application filed December 27, 1887. Serial No. 259,080. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELT JoNEs, of Valley Springs, in the county of Minnehaha and Territory of Dakota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Punching and Shearing Machines, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which- The drawing shows aperspective view of my punching and shearing machine.
The object of my invention is to provide at a moderate cost a simple, reliable, and effective punching' and shearing machine, which is especially designedA for blacksmiths and other iron-workers who are confined to the use of appliances operated by hand-power.
The construction and operation of the device will be readily understood by referring to the accompanying drawing, in which A represents the castiron base or body of the machine, which may be secured to a'bench or suitable framework. The main lever Bis pivoted at O and re-enforced,when desired, by an adjustable weight, which may be fixed at any desired position by aset-serew.
D represents the shears, the lower blade of which is recessed lat one end to adapt it for cutting round bars or rods. This blade is adjustable by setscrews, and both blades may he readily removed or replaced when desired. A short lever, E, is so pivoted in connection with the main lever as -to constitute a conipound lever, thereby furnishing additional power to the punch F, which is formed with a shoulder and inserted in a slot and retained therein by a setscrew.
The die-box Gis fitted to a slide-box in the base of the machine. Varioussizes of punches and vcorresponding dies may be used. A
It will be observed thatone of the advantages attending the use of this machine is the fact that both of its functions are performed by a downward movement of the main lever.
What I claim as new is 1. In a punching and shearing machine, a base provided with lugs in which is pivoted a compound lever, the main lever having a shearing-blade co operating with an adjustable blade attached to the base of the machine, the lower blade having a recess for cutting round bars, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination, inapunching and shearing machine, the main lever having a shearing blade co operating with an adjustable blade attached `to the base of the machine, with a punch operated by thecompound lever,sub stantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, this 14th day of September, 1887, in the presence of witnesses;
ELI JONES.
