ISAAC HALF, OF MARYSVILLE, OHIO.
FOLDING BED-LOUNGE LEG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,299, dated September 11, 1888.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, ISAAC} HALF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marysville, in the county of Union and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Bed-Lounge Legs; and .I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the let ters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding legs for furniture, and is intended more especially for folding sofas or sofa-bedsteads, and has for its object to provide a jointed folding leg adapted to slide in a groove in the furniture out of the way, and when pulled out drop down into position and be automatically locked in place; and to this end my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and more specifically pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the leg and part of a sofa-bedstead, showing the leg in a position for supporting the bed-section of the sofa. Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1, partlyin section. Fig. Sis a section through a portion of the sofa, showing the leg folded and pushed back in the groove; and Figs. 4-, 5, and 6, detail views.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A indicates the leg proper, provided at its bottom with two lugs, within which is journaled the shank of a caster. The upper end of the leg A terminates in an elongated slot, (0, as more clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
B indicates a guide-block bifurcated at one end, and b a hinge-pin, which passes through the elongated slot in the leg A, by which the leg A and the guide-block B are hinged together. The guideblock B is provided upon each side with a flange, 1/, for the purpose hereinafter described.
0 indicates a face-plate, consisting of a fiat plate or disk having a central slot, 0, of the shape shown, to permit of the passage of the leg A and its caster through it, and is pro vided with two vertical parallel ribs, 0 c. The faceplate O is slightly beveled from its top to the upper extremity of the slot 0, as seen at c", for the purpose hereinafter described.
The sofa is provided with a groove, D, of a size and length sufficient to contain the leg A and guide-block B, and said groove is provided at its bottom and on each side with rabbets d d, in which slide the flanges b b on the guide-block B.
In placing the leg upon the sofa the guideblock B is first slipped into the groove and the face-plate Cslipped over the leg A and screwed upon the front E of the sofa.
The operation of the device is as follows: When the sofa is to be folded up, the leg is raised until it is in line with the guide-block B, and both it and the said guide-block are pushed back within the groove D out of the way. \Vhen it is desired to employ the leg to support the sofa after it has been unfolded, the leg A is pulled out until the flanges b b on the guide-block B strike the front E of the sofa, and the leg A is allowed to drop down to a right angle with the guide-block B and rest upon the floor. The weight of the sofa will cause the hinge-pin b on the guide-block B to drop to the bottom of the elongated slot at the top of the leg A, and the beveled portion a of the face-plate C will exert a wedgelike action upon the upper end of the leg A, drawing the leg into close contact with the face-plate, and firmly locking said leg in position. When the leg is in this position, the ribs 0 c on the faceplate will embrace the leg on each side and prevent anylateral displacement thereof.
In the drawings I have shown the elongated slot at the upper end of the leg A made by bifureating the upper end of said leg and bringing the ends thereof together, (see Figs. 2 and 3,) and the inner member of said bifurcated portion is made slightly wedge-shaped to assist in firmly locking the leg in position; but it is manifest that the elongated slot may be formed in any suitable manner.
From the above description it will be seen that it is merely necessary to draw out the leg from the groove in the sofa and allow it to drop down to a Vertical position, the weight of the sofa automatically locking the leg in having a central aperture, as shown, and proposition. vided with vertical ribs 0 a and beveled por- What I claim istion 0, substantially as described, and for the 1.
