UNITED STATES PATENT @rrrca GEORGE E. DE ARMENT, OF EVANSBURG, PENN$YLVANIA.
BOLT-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,957, dated $eptember 4, 1888.
(No mod cl.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. De ARMENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansburg, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt and Rivet Nippcrs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tools of that class known as nippersflwhich are nsedin blacksmith, tin, and the like shops to nip off the projecting ends of nails after they have been driven in a horses hoof, and for nipping off the ends of bolts and rivets; and it has for its object to provide a tool of simple and durable construction, which will, in proportion to its size, have a greater leverage, and therefore greater biting or nipping power, than the tools for a like purpose now in common use; and it consists of the parts and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view of the tool complete, and Fig. 2 a per spective view of one of the levers and knives detached.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in both the views.
A represents one of the handles or levers of the tool, which, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, is slightly bent at its upper end and slotted, as at a. At the upper end of the slot projecting rounded cheek-pieces a are formed on one side, so that that end of the slot is practically open. At the opposite side aprojection, b, is formed, on the upper end of which a head, 0, projects above the end of the slot, but to one side thereof, and is provided with grooves or channels d, formed in three of its sides. In these grooves or channels (I the legs c of the knife or blade B are adapted to slide and fit snugly, being held rigidly in position by a screw, j, which is driven into the screwthreaded hole formed in the edge of the legs and groove (1. The blades B are of the full width of tlie projection (Z, and the shout ders h thereof rest squarely against the inner face of the head 0, thus insuring aiirm hearing for the knives or blades, and at the same time providing for their ready removal for repair or replacement.
In the slot a of the lever A a short auxiliary lever, G, is pivoted by a bolt passed through the perforationsiin the cheelopieces a, and is provided with a projection and grooved head in all particulars similar to the projection b and head 0 of thelever A, the lever 0 project ing from the center of its projection, thus leav ing its end the same width as the end of lever.
A, and the curved under surface of its projection snugly fitting the rounded cheekpieces a, on which it works, and securing a plane surface on each side ofthe tool at its end. This lever also carries a blade, I3, secured to it in the same manner as the one above described. The lever O gradually widens toward its lower end and has formed on it teeth or cogs Zon the are of a circle, which mesh with cogs m, formed on the enlarged end of handle or lever D, which is pivoted in the lower end of slot (1. The handle D is bent to ward handle A, and its enlarged end is rounded, as clearly shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 1, and the teeth or cogs m formed thereon at an angle to the lever, so that when the tool is closed, as shown in Fig. 1, but one tooth will be wholly in mesh with the teeth Z.
Immediately beneath the pivotal point of levers A and D and on their inner sides or edges are formed two stops, it, in one of which a screw-threaded opening is made, into which a screw, 0, is inserted, so that the manipulation of this screw will adjust the distance apart of the edges of the blades B, and thus prevent them being brought together to their injury.
By forming the teeth or cogs on the ends of the levers, as described, and pivoting them so that they will mesh together, I attain great leverage, and a very heavy bolt, rivet, or piece of metal may be cut by a comparatively small and light tool.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hereinbeforedcscribed bolt and rivet nippers, consisting of the handle or lever having the slot a formed in one end thereof, the cogged auxiliary lever pivoted in the upper end of said slot, and the projections of said said levers or handles, substantially as de levers having grooved or channeled heads, the scribed.
blades having the legs 0, the screw-threaded In testimony whereof I allix my signature in holes 9, formed in said heads and legs, the presence of two witnesses.
screws for securing said blades to said heads, GEORGE B. DE ARMENT. the lever or handle pivoted in the lower end lVitnesses:
