Abstract
A hand propelled or operated swimming pool cleaner is disclosed comprising a wheeled frame having a motor driven pump mounted thereon. The pump is adapted to pick up dirt particles or the like from the pool floor and pump the same through a filter to remove the particles from the water. An elongated handle is secured to the cleaner to permit a person at poolside to manually maneuver the cleaner to clean the bottom of the pool.

A further object of the invention is to provide a hand propelled swimming pool cleaner which is inexpensive to manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hand propelled swimming pool cleaner which is refined in appearance and durable in use.
These and other objects will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
This invention consists in the construction, arrangements, and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained as hereinafter more fully set forth, specifically pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

FIG. 3 is a sectional view seen along lines 3-3 of FIG. 2; and
FIG. 4 is a side view of the'swimming pool cleaner.
The numeral generally refers to the swimming pool cleaner of this invention generally comprising a frame means 12 having a bottom 14 provided with a plurality of caster wheels 16. An opening 18 is provided in bottom 14 as illustrated in FIG. 3. The numeral 20 refers to a brush means secured to bottom 14 and extending around the opening 18 as illustrated in the drawings. Brush 20 is generally in the form of a rectangle but the ends thereof are rounded as illustrated in FIG. 2.
The numeral 22 refers to an impeller means positioned above the opening 18 and below the plate 24. Motor 26 is secured to the plate 24 by bolts 28 and is connected to the impeller 22 by shaft 30 so as to operate the same. A properly sealed and grounded electrical cord 32 extends from the motor 26 to permit power to be supplied to the motor. An elongated handle 34 is secured to the upper end of motor 26 by means of bolt 36. As seen in the drawings, a washer-like member 38 is secured to the lower end of the handle 34 and the bolt 36 extends therethrough to provide a pivotal connection about a vertical axis therebetween.
An accordion pleated cardboard type filter 40 is positioned on the plate 24 as illustrated in FIG. 3 and is generally cylindrical or ring-shaped. Housing 42 exends upwardly from bottom 14 as illustrated in FIG. 3
and generally includes outer wall member 44, top 46 "and inner wall 48. As seenin FIG. 3, outer wall 44 is spaced from the filter 40 to define a compartment therebetween. The numeral52 refers to the compartmerit area between the plate 24 and bottom 14. Inner wall 48 of housing 42 is provided with a plurality of openings 54 formed therein to permit the water to discharge therethrough as will be described in more detail hereinafter. It should be noted that the housing 42 and bottom l4 may be madeas an intregal part or separately if desired. Likewise, the upper portion of the housing 42 may also be provided as a separate component so as to permit the easy insertion of the filter 40 into the cleaner.
In operation, the cleaner 10 is lowered into the pool by the handle 34 until the wheels 16 engage the pool floor or bottom 56. The motor 26 is energized which causes the impeller 22-to be rotated so that the water will be sucked or pumped upwardly into the opening 18 as illustrated by arrows in FIG. 3. The water is pumped through the compartment area 52 and the compartment 50 into the filter 40 as also illustrated by the arrows in FIG. 3. The dirt particles which are suspended in the water are trapped in the filter 40 and the water is discharged outwardly through the openings 54. The brush 20 helps to dislodge the dirt particles from the pool floor to obtain a more efficient cleaning operation.
The handle 34 permits the cleaner 10 to be easily maneuvered along the pool floor so that the entire floor may be quickly and easily cleaned. The cleaner of this invention is especially well adapted for use with the above ground type pools having a vinyl liner type construction. After the pool has been cleaned, the cleaner 10 can be attached to the outside wall of the pool and continued to operate so as to act as a filter for the pool.
Thus it can be seen that an improved swimming pool cleaner has been provided which can be hand operated. A swimming pool cleaner of this invention not only efficiently cleans the bottom of the pool but also permits the cleaner to be built in an economical manner. Thus it can be seen that the invention accomplishes at least all of the stated objectives.
I claim:
1. A submergible swimming pool cleaner comprising,
a wheeled frame means,
a motor driven pump means on said frame means having a water intake means,
a filter means on said frame means in fluid communication with said water intake means for trapping water-borne particles in the water passing therethrough,
an elongated handle means operatively connected to said frame means extending upwardly therefrom to permit a person at poolside to manually move the cleaner along the bottom of the pool,
said frame means comprising a bottom portion spaced above the floor of the pool, a cylindrical housing extending upwardly from said bottom portion and having upstanding spaced apart outer and inner wall portions, said housing having a top portion extending over the upper ends of its said inner and outer wall portions, said filter means being cylindrical in shape and positioned in said housing between said inner and outer wall portions thereof, said filter means having an outer wall portion, said filter means having a diameter less than said housing so that the outer wall portion of said filter means is spaced inwardly of said outer wall portion of said housing to define an enclosed compartment area therebetween. said filter means having an inner wall portion positioned adjacent the inner wall portion of said housing, said inner wall portion of said housing having a plurality of discharge openings formed therein in communication with said filter means in said compartment area said water intake means being an intake port formed in said bottom portion, said water intake means being in fluid communication with said compartment area so that the water will be drawn inwardly through said intake port by said pump means into said motor driven pump means comprises a waterproof motor positioned between said inner wall portion of said housing and spaced therefrom.
3. The swimming pool cleaner of claim 2 wherein said handle means is secured to said motor.
4. The swimming pool cleaner of claim 3 wherein said handle means is pivotally secured to said motor about a vertical axis.
Claims (4)
1. A submergible swimming pool cleaner comprising, a wheeled frame means, a motor driven pump means on said frame means having a water intake means, a filter means on said frame means in fluid communication with said water intake means for trapping water-borne particles in the water passing therethrough, an elongated handle means operatively connected to said frame means extending upwardly therefrom to permit a person at poolside to manually move the cleaner along the bottom of the pool, said frame means comprising a bottom portion spaced above the floor of the pool, a cylindrical housing extending upwardly from said bottom portion and having upstanding spaced apart outer and inner wall portions, said housing having a top portion extending over the upper ends of its said inner and outer wall portions, said filter means being cylindrical in shape and positioned in said housing between said inner and outer wall portions thereof, said filter means having an outer wall portion, said filter means having a diameter less than said housing so that the outer wall portion of said filter means is spaced inwardly of said outer wall portion of said housing to define an enclosed compartment area therebetween, said filter means having an inner wall portion positioned adjacent the inner wall portion of said housing, said inner wall portion of said housing having a plurality of discharge openings formed therein in communication with said filter means in said compartment area, said water Intake means being an intake port formed in said bottom portion, said water intake means being in fluid communication with said compartment area so that the water will be drawn inwardly through said intake port by said pump means into said compartment area thence through said filter means and outwardly through said discharge openings.

A submergible swimming pool cleaner comprising, a wheeled frame means, a motor driven pump means on said frame means having a water intake means, a filter means on said frame means in fluid communication with said water intake means for trapping water-borne particles in the water passing therethrough, an elongated handle means operatively connected to said frame means extending upwardly therefrom to permit a person at poolside to manually move the cleaner along the bottom of the pool, said frame means comprising a bottom portion spaced above the floor of the pool, a cylindrical housing extending upwardly from said bottom portion and having upstanding spaced apart outer and inner wall portions, said housing having a top portion extending over the upper ends of its said inner and outer wall portions, said filter means being cylindrical in shape and positioned in said housing between said inner and outer wall portions thereof, said filter means having an outer wall portion, said filter means having a diameter less than said housing so that the outer wall portion of said filter means is spaced inwardly of said outer wall portion of said housing to define an enclosed compartment area therebetween, said filter means having an inner wall portion positioned adjacent the inner wall portion of said housing, said inner wall portion of said housing having a plurality of discharge openings formed therein in communication with said filter means in said compartment area, said water Intake means being an intake port formed in said bottom portion, said water intake means being in fluid communication with said compartment area so that the water will be drawn inwardly through said intake port by said pump means into said compartment area thence through said filter means and outwardly through said discharge openings.
2. The swimming pool cleaner of claim 1 wherein said motor driven pump means comprises a waterproof motor positioned between said inner wall portion of said housing and spaced therefrom.
3. The swimming pool cleaner of claim 2 wherein said handle means is secured to said motor.
