PORTABLE FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,644, dated August 28, 1888.

Be it known that I, EmJAn' l)lll1U'lll,tCiti zen of the United States, residing at Neowash, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented ccrtai n new and useful Improvements in Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare thatthe following isa full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates toaportable fence, and has for its object the provision of a cheap, durable, and simply-constructed fence that shall be sufficiently rigid when erected to serve all the purposes of a permanent fence,and that shall be easy of removal and adjustment when it is desired to change its location.

The invention consists in panels formed of sections which are heldin vertical position by being impinged between posts, one of which is secured to a baseboard, the opposite post being movable to or from the fixed post to accommodate any thickness of panelboards, and also in vertical end strips secured to the sections of panel, which prevent longitudinal movement of the same.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of fence, showing two panels impinged between the posts. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on lines 00 .r, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail View showing the manner of securing the panels at a corner. Fig. 4 is adetail view of the base-board, showing also a preferred manner of securing the posts therein. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the central bars for securing the sections together to form a panel.

A designates the base-board, formed with a mortise, B, into which the base of post 0 is secured, post (J being braced from lateral movement by braces l), secured to the base board and post.

E designates a post secured in parallel relation with post 0 by means of bolts F, passed through both posts.

G represents a panel of fence formed of two sections, II and I. Each of the sections is formed of two or more horizontal boards, K, and transverse strips L secured thereto, preferably by nails or spikes.

M is a clamp formed of two bars, N N,connected by bolts 0. This clamp serves to connect and hold the two sections II and I to form a panel.

In constructing a fence, post (I is secured within the mortise in l'iase-board A, post E is placed in parallel relation thereto and held by bolts F, braces l) are secured to the baseboard and post 0, and the posts are placcdin the desired position along the proposed line of fence. The sections of panels are constructed by nailing the strips to the boards which are to form a section, the strips being secured to the boards a distance from the ends thereof corresponding to the width of the posts, whereby they may serve as stops to limit the horizontal movement of the panel by abutting against the post.

The two sections are assembled in proper relation to cause a space between the upper board of thelower section and thelower board of the upper section corrcspomling in width to the spaces between the boards of each section, and are firmly secured in this position by placing a bar upon each side of the panel and tightening the bolls sufficiently to hold the panel frictionally between the same. The panel thus constructed is raised to a vertical position and placed with the end thereof between posts and I], the opposite panel being in a like relation, and bolts F tightened to hold the panels firmly between the posts.

In forming a eorner,l rolls are passed through strips L of each panel, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby dispensing with the use of posts.

If desired, the base-boards may be formed with holes 0, as shown in Fig. 4, for the insertion of stakes to be driven into the ground to anchor the same lirmly in position.

By the construction described the sections of panels can be readily transported to the line of fence in course of construction, being of a width to lie within the bolsters of a wagon, and are easily placed in position by a single person. liy the nseof sectional panels, when it is desired to form an opening for a driveway through any portion of fence, it can be easily done by removing the clamp and loosening the nuts upon the bolts.

\Vhat I claim isl. A portable fence formed of a baseboard, apost secured thereto, a movablepost in parallel relation therewith, and bolts passed through each post, in combination with separable and removable panels held in vertical position between the posts, and from horizontal move- 5 ment by strips attached to each section of the panels, as and for the purpose set forth.
