FIG. 1.
FIG.3.
METHOD OF APPLYING GARMENT TRIM BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a method of applying trim to a garment and more particularly to a method of lace trim to a garment.
According to the invention, a method of applying trim such as lace to a garment such as a dress is provided in which the trim is attached as by stitching to a straight section of bias tape. The bias tape together with the trim can then be formed to a desired curve and set by pressing to the garment resulting in a professional appearance and an edge that is sufficiently reinforced to retain its shape. Other methods of attachment such as utilizing press-on bias tape can be utilized as well as stitching.
An object of the present invention is the provision of an improved method for attaching trim to garments.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a method of attaching trim to garments which is extremely simple.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a method for attaching trim to a garment which results in a professional appearance.
Other objects and many of the attendant advantages will be readily appreciated as the same becomes better understood by reference to the following detailed description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference numerals designate like parts through the FIGS. thereof and wherein:
FIG. 1 is a top view of a section of a garment with trim applied according to the method of the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a sectional view illustrating the first step utilized in the method of the present invention; and
FIG. 3 is a cross sectional view illustrating the completed attachment of trim according to the method of the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING Referring to FIG. 1, a section of a garment 11 is shown having a section of bias tape 12 attached thereto at stitches 13. A lace trim 14 is attached to bias tape 12.
Referring to FIG. 2, a section of lace trim 14 is stitched at 16 to bias tape sections 12 and 12A.
Referring to FIG. 3, a lace trim section 14 is shown stitched at 16 to bias tape sections 12 and 12A. Garment section 11 is shown stitched to bias tape sections 12 and 12A at 13.
OPERATION Referring back to all of the FIGURES, it can be seen that if two sections of bias tape 12 and 12A are stitched to a section of lace trim 14 the result will be that shown in FIG. 2. At this time, the trim assembly consisting of bias tape sections 12 and 12A and trim section 14 are applied to a garment section 11 by slipping the garment section 11 between the outside layers of bias tape sections 12 and 12A and the entire assembly stitched as at 13 in FIGS. 1 and 3. If it is necessary to form a curve surface as shown in FIG. 1, after the stitching of the bias tape sections to the trim section as shown in FIG. 2, the entire trim assembly can then be laid out and curved in any desired shape and ironed and pressed with a hot iron setting its curved form to match with the curvature of a garment to which it is being applied such as 11 in FIG. 1.
It should be understood, of course, that the foregoing disclosure relates to only a preferred embodiment of the invention and that it is intended to cover all changes and modifications of the example of the inven- .tion herein chosen for the purposes of the disclosure which do not constitute departures from the spirit and scope of the invention.
The invention claimed is: 1. The method of applying trim to a garment comprising the steps of:
attaching a first and second section of bias tape to each side of one edge of a section of trim to be attached to a garment; shaping the first and second sections of bias tape; pressing the sections of bias tape and trim for setting their shape; placing the edge of the garment to be trimmed between exposed edges of the first and second bias tape sections; and attaching the garment to be trimmed to the exposed edges of the first and second sections of bias tape.
Claims (1)
1. The method of applying trim to a garment comprising the steps of: attaching a first and second section of bias tape to each side of one edge of a section of trim to be attached to a garment; shaping the first and second sections of bias tape; pressing the sections of bias tape and trim for setting their shape; placing the edge of the garment to be trimmed between exposed edges of the first and second bias tape sections; and attaching the garment to be trimmed to the exposed edges of the first and second sections of bias tape.
