LAST EEEEEEEEEEEE R.
No. 388,182. Patented Aug. 21, 1888.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM COOK, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND PAUL D. BEED, OF SAME PLAOE.
LAST-BLOCK FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 1\To. 388,182, dated August 21, 1888.
Application filed June 29,1887. Serial No. 212.873. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM CooK, of the city, county, and State of New York, haveinvented a new and Improved Last-Block Fast- 5 ener, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved form of fastener that is applicable for use in the fastening of the blocks of lasts to the main body of the last, the object of the invention being to provide a device which shall be exceedingly cheap and durable, and one which may be quickly and easily manipnlated to lock the block to place or to permit of the removal of the block.
Reference is to be had to the acconipanying drawings, formingI a part of this specitication, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional elevation of a last provided with my improved form of fastener, the view being taken npon a line corresponding with the line :r x of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the last, and Fig. 8 is a cross-sectonal view taken on line a: x of Fig. 1.
ln the drawings above referred to, 10 represents the body of the last, and 11 the block, which block is, as nspal, provided with a pin or projection, 12, that fits in a recess forined for its reception in the loody of the last, as is shown in Fig. 1 and indieated in Flg. 2. In the upper end of the block 11 form a longitndinal slot, 14, and in the upper face of the block above the slot there is a countersunk recess, 15. A screw-shank, 16, having a flattened head, 17, which projects from two opposite sides of the shank,is bronght into engageinent with the main body of the last in such 4,0 position as to project ontward through the slot 14, the screw being turned down into the last-body to a position such that when the block 11 is applied to the body and moved to the position in which it is shown in the drawings the under defining-edges of the head will be in a plane slightly above the lower edges of the countersunk recess 15, the head at this time being turned so that it will be para-llel with the line of the slot 14. After the block has been adj usted,as described, and a quarterturn is imparted to the screw, the screw being moved to the position in which it is shown in Fg. 2, the block 11 will be securely locked to the body of the last; but when it is desired to remove the block the screw may be turned back a quarter-turn, after which the block may be readily lifted from the body of the last. The upper portion of the slot 14 extends entirely through the block, while the lower portion is carried only partially through the body of the block and extends well down toward the forward or lower end thereof, as is shown in Fig. 1, so that in removing the block from the last it may be drawn straight back and yet will not bind on the upper of the shoe that is on the last. ln practice I prefer to form tlre slot 14 by means of a circular saw.
Thefastener above described is not only excecdingly cheap, but is easily manipulated, the head of the shank being of such form that it may be grasped by the ordinarypinehers or pliers used by shoe-makers.
Having thus fully described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentfl 75 The improved last, consisting of the body, the last-block having in its under side aslot,14, open at its upper end, the block being formed with a conntersunk recess, and the fastener having ashank connected with the last-body and Constructed with a flattened head, theunder side of said head being fitted to the wall of' the countersnnk recess, and the head and slot being suitably formed relatively to permit the removal of the block when the head is 85 turned into alignmcnt with said slot, the head when turned into alignment with the slot presenting no projection beyond the line of the base-wall of the slot 14 for a short distance below the upper open end thereof, whereby in 90 removing the block it may be slipped back a short distance before it is lifted, substantially as set forth.
VVILLIAM OOOK.
iVitnesses:
EDWARD KENT, Jr., EDGAR TATE.
