SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,123, dated August 21, 1888,

Application filed June 21, 1888. Serial No. 277,760.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, MAX COHEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, haveinveuted certain new and useful Improvementsin Coats; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon,whieh forms a part of this specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in coats which will befully understood from the following description and claim, reference being had to the annexed drawing, which is a view showing the coat opened in front, and also showing the pants attached by means of suspenders to the side and back straps of the shoulder-yoke.

Referring to the annexed drawing by letters, A. designates a coat, and B a pair of pants, which may be made in any desired or fashionable style. In the present instance I have represented a coat or long jacket provided with a collar, a, and designed to be buttoned in front from the collar to the lower edge of the shirt. The pants may also be made in the well-known manner, and they are provided with suspender buttons h, fastened to the waistband in front and behind. I

To the shoulder portions of the coat or jacket A, inside thereof, I stitch a yoke, O, which may be made of any suitable strong fabric, and which is formed with lateral ShouldereXteusions f f, that extend in front of the armholes E E. Between these shoulder-extensions the back part of the yoke is stitched to the neck or collar band, and by means oftwo or more diagonal rows of stitches, z z, the yoke is stitched to the back of the coat at points corresponding to the back seams. To the straps d d d are removably and ad justabl y attached buckles c c e, which are preferably provided with hooks adapted to receive and hold the eyes which are secured to the upper connected ends of suspenders D D 1), preferably made of elastic material and provided with button-holes for attachment to the pants-buttons h.

It will thus be seen that the yoke C, with its front and back suspender-straps, constitutes part of the garment A, and that the suspenders and their adjustable buckles are detachable from said yoke and also detachable from the pants.

It will also be observed that when the said parts are applied upon a person perfect freedom of movement is allowed while the coat will lie smooth upon the body. Furthermore, the entire support for the pants will be distributed about the shoulders in an easy, comfortable manner. At the same time the said yoke will act as a shoulder-brace when the coat is buttoned at the neck.

As an improved article of manufacture, a coat having a shoulder-lining composed of a yoke, 0, adapted to the back, the shoulders, and front parts of the coat, in combination with the free depending strap (l at the back of the coat-yoke, the free depending straps d d at the front of this yoke, the arches c c, the horizontal stitching g 9, and the oblique shoulder-stitching z i, the upper edge of said yoke being stitched to the collar a, and the sides to the body of the coat, as set forth.
