IMPROVEMENT IN LUBRICATING JOURNALS AND AXLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,760, dated June 2, 1863.

Beitknown thatLJEANBAP'rIsTE GABRIEL MARIE FREDERIO PIRET, of Paris, in the Empire of France, civil engineer, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Axle and Journal Boxes and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure is a central longitudinal vertical section of an axle-box having my improve- Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding pal ts in the several figures.
This invention consists, principally, in a device, which I term the helicoid winged crown, applied within an axle or journal box to provide for the more efl'ectual lubrication of the axle or shaft and its bearing.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
a b c is a cast-iron box, consisting of three parts, so combined by flanges and bolts as to constitute a whole. The first part, a, receives the brass shell bearing d.- The next piece, 12, completes the surrounding of the axle A, and the third, 0, or front piece contains the helicoid winged crown, which is composed of a ring of metahf, having on its periphery a series of curved and oblique wings or buckets, c e, for the purpose of taking up the oil or other lubricating-liquid from the bottom of the box as the said ring rotates with the axle, and delivering it through an opening, j, into a chamber, j, in the upper part of the box, whence it passes through a hole, j, into the oil-hole d of the shell or bearing d. The wings or buckets e e are arranged alternately in 0pposite directions, so that half of the number may operate while the axle is rotating in one direction and the other half while it is rotat ing in the opposite direction. The ring f fits easily over the collar A, which is formed on the end of the axle, and it may be caused to rotate with the axle by means of a pin or feather projecting inwardly from its interior and entering a hole or notch in the collar A. The said ring is faced to fit snugly between the interior of the piece 0 and the flat face of a disk, h, which is formed on the pieces a b of the box, to prevent any oil escaping between the ring and the pieces b 0, and the said ring is covered at the top and sides by a stationary concentric guard, i i, which prevents the oil or lubricating-m atter from being deposited directly upon the ring, as it is poured in through the usual opening under the hinged lid k, the oil so poured in running down the outside of the said guard i into the bottom of the box.
In the bottom of the box there is a partition, 10, which forms below it a chamber, from which the lubricating-matter cannot possibly run out at the inner end of the box, and in this partition there is a hole, 19, through which the lubricating-matter dropping from the journal and bearing passes into the chamber. This chamber is open toward the outer end of the box, to allow the lubricating-matter to return to the bottom of the part 0, to be taken up again by the helicoid winged crown.
The inner end of the box has a flange, 0, formed around the opening through which the shaft passes, for the reception of an overlapping ring, a, which is made in two pieces united by screws passing through lugs n n, provided thereon, as shown in Fig. 5, which is a face view of a portion of the said ring. This/ring nearly fits the axle, and excludes dust and dirt from the box.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The application, within an axle or journal box, of whatIhave herein described as a helicoid winged crown, rotating in contact with a stationary disk, It, or other equivalent fiat surface, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
2. The overlappingdiskn, encircling afiange, 0, formed upon the inner end of the box, substantially as andfor the purpose herein speci fied.
