' H. H. NORRINGTON.
HAND STAMP. No. 386,716. Patented July 24, 1888.
T LST.
HENRY II. NORRINGTON, OF VEST BAY CITY, MICHIGAN.
HAND=STAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 386,716, dated July 24, 1888.
Application filed January 17, 1887. Serial No. 224.644.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. NORRINGTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vest Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Stamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart ofthis specification.
My invention relates to ahand-stamp in which a portion of the printing-characters are made fast to the base of the stamp, with an openingleading through said base, and an endless ribbon or band upon which I mount transversely a series of names representing the names of the cashiers of various banks. The band containing the names passes over a roller in the case and under a pressing or stamping roller located in the opening at the base of the stamp. The central roller is provided with thumb-wheels for revolving it so as to cause the band to travel, whereby a desired name may be brought over the opening at the base of the stamp.
The stamp is also provided with an auxiliary rolleror cylinder, upon which Istamp or otherwise secure the names of the various cashiers of banks, being a duplicate of the names on the band.
In the front face of the stamp I provide an opening with a glass cover. Said opening is located in front of the cylinder, upon which are placed the names of the cashiers. The cylinder is geared to the roller having the thumbwheels, and the names of the cashiers are so located on the cylinder and the band that when a name appears through the opening in the front face of the stamp the same name on the band will be under the stamping-roller ready for use. This enables the operator to place the desired name of a cashier ready for use without turning the bottom of the stamp upward.
This stamp is designed for use in banks and for stamping bills sent to other banks for collection, the stamp being so arranged that when an impression has been given to a bill for col- (No model.)
lection it shows the name of the bank sending the claim and order to pay said claim to the cashier of the bank receiving it, giving his name. As an illustration, when the stamp is arranged as in Figure l of the accompanying drawings, an impression from it would read as follows: Pay to the order of M. Jones, Cashr for Collection Account, State Bank, Vest Bay City, and my invention consists in the general arrangement of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out particularly in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Fig. 1 is a front perspective ofa stamp embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a back perspective of same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of same, taken on dotted line 1 1 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A represents the hollow ease, having two sides and a front, the back being open. To the upper end of the case I attach the operating-handle B. Journaled in the sides of the case at a is a cylinder, R. One end of the cylinder has a pinion, P. On said cylinder I mount the names of the cashiers of banks, as shown at d of Figs. 1 and 2. Below the cylinder or roller R, I locate asmall roller, It, which is also journaled in the sides of the case. Each end of said roller on the outside of the case is provided with a thumbwheel, n, whereby said roller may be turned by the thumb and finger of a right or left handed person, for the purposes hereinafter specified.
C represents the base of the stamp, upon which the fixed characters are mounted, and Z an opening in the base of the stamp. At e, I journal the stampingroller E. (See Figs. 2 and 3.) The periphery of this roller should be provided with a series of flat longitudinal surfaces, at, as shown in Fig. 3.
D is a belt or band which passes over the drivingroller R and down under the stamp ingroller l l, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, forming an endless belt or band, and said band travels under the flat-faeed roller E,revolving it. As a wheel, a, of the roller P is revolved, the band in passing under the stamping-roller fills the opening Z in the base C of the stamp, the roller being so located that as the names '6 of the cashiers are brought one at a time under said roller the letters forming the names will stand on a horizontal line with the printing-characters H of the base of the stamp, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The names z of the cashiers should be lo cated on the band D at such a distance from each other that when passing arou nd the stamping-rollerE one of said names will stand along one of the flat faces a of said roller, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, in which 13 represents the char actors for stamping the names of the cashiers.
Through the opening 6 in the front of the case the operator in turning a wheel, it, obtains the name of a cashier of a bank that he desires to locate under the stamping-roller E. The pinion P, meshing with the pinion P, causes the roller or cylinder R to travel equally or simultaneously with the band D. The names 1' of the cashiers on the band D are so located with respect to the names 01 on the roller R that the name appearing to the eye of the operator through the opening 6 will be found under the stamping-roller E as the name M. Jones appears in Fig. 1.
It will be observed that the names on the roller R appear in the natural position, while the same name on the bottom of the stampbelt D is upside down. By this arrangement the desired name can be more readily found on the roller R than could be found on the bottom of the stamp by turning it upward, as is common.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hand-stamp having two rollers with a band passing around said rollers, said band having on its outer face printing'charactersfin combination with an auxiliary roller geared to one of the former rollers, having on its periphery duplicate characters of those on the band, and a thutnbwheel for revolving said characters, as and for the purposes specified.
2. In combination with the case having the handle, the opening 6, and base with opening 2, the rollers R B, the pinions attached to said rollers, the roller E, the band having printingcharact'ers mounted thereon, and a series of duplicate characters, d, mounted on the roller R, and the thumb-Wheel for revolving said characters, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY H. NORRINGTON.
