COMBINED NEEDLE-CASE AND DARNING IMPLEMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 386,283, dated July 17, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HERBERT G. ARMITAGE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland,residing at Bay Shore, Suffolk county, New York, have invented an Improved Oombined Needle-Case and Darning Implement, of which the following is a specification.

The object of myinvention is to so construct a combined darning implement and needlecase that it will serve a number of purposes other than those mentioned, and this object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figurel is avertical section of the combined darning implement and needle case. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the parts of the same detached from each other. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of another form of the device, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing detached a part of the device illustrated in Fig. 3.

In Fig. 1, A represents a handle enlarged at the inner end to form a head, B, and having this head abruptly reduced in diameter some distance from its end, so as to form a shoulder, a, that portion beyond the shoulder having in it a transverse slot, 1), for the reception and retention of a paper, 0, containing needles. A cap, D, fits over the reduced portion of the head, and this cap has an internal chamber, d, of such extent as to receive the projecting portion of the paper of needles when the cap is applied to the head.

The handleAis hollow, so as to form achamher, 6, for the reception of one or more darning-needles, x, the outer end of this chamber being closed by a detachable cap, f, which preferably forms a rounded tip upon the end of the handle, so that the latter may be used for distending the fingers of gloves for the purpose offacilitating the darning of the same, the cap or cover D being egg-shaped, so that it may be used in darning stockings and like articles.

In the head B of the handle, on each side of the transverse slot 1) therein, are formed recesses, which, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, receive pin-cushions g, or these recesses may be of sufficient depth to receive loose needles, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, this construction being preferably adopted when the implement is made without the projecting handle for receiving the loose needles, the reduced portion of the head B in this case being of such depth as to extend to or almost to theend of the chamber in the cap orcover D.

By forming the slot b in the reduced portion of the head-that is, the portion which projccts beyond the shoulder asaid slot can be readily formed by means of a saw, and yet when the cap or cover D is applied the ends of the slot are concealed and the smooth finish of the outer portion of the implement is not marred thereby.

Having thus described my invention. what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. The combination of the head having a projecting portion with a transverse slot extending from side to side of the same and adapted to hold a paper of needles, with a cap or cover fitted to said projecting portion of the head and having a recess of such depth as to receive said paperof needles, all substantially as specified.

2. The combination of the head having a projecting portion with a transverse slot extending from side to side of the same and adapted to hold a paper of needles, and having openings formed therein at the sides of the slot, with the cap or cover fitted to said projecting portion of the head and having a recess of such depth as to receive the paper of needles, all substantially as specified.
