This invention relates to an eternal calendar, a kit containing the same, and a method of making said calendar.
Over the years, calendars have been used as advertising elements. The general approach has been to print calendars, either desk or wall variety, and to place advertising in a portion of the calendar. One of the problems involved has been that the calendars have only been good for one year, in other words, they are not eternal calendars. Another problem has been the lack of variety in such advertising mediums, none of which are particularly appealing to the eye. Nor are the common calendars usually supplied by advertisers very decorative.
The present invention overcomes and obviates the aforementioned problems inasmuch as it is an eternal calendar and is extremely eye appealing and decorative. An advertisement carrying tube receives four cubes on which are printed the month, day, and numbers corresponding to a date. Both the tube and the cubes can be constructed of cardboard or plastic and are easily foldable into final position. They may be supplied in a blank form condition, in other words, in a condition whereby the user will assemble the various components and put them together to form the calendar.
Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide a novel eternal calendar.
It is another object of this invention to provide an eternal calendar having advertising indicia thereon.
It is a further object of this invention to provide an eternal calendar whereby the main portion of the calendar receives cubes carrying information as to month, day and numerical dates.
It is still a further object of this invention to provide a kit having blanks therein for forming an eternal calendar whereby the user may assemble the calendar itself.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel method of assembling an eternal calendar.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel method of making an eternal calendar for carrying advertising thereon.
These and other objects of this invention will become apparent when reading the following specification and accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a front view of the assembled calendar comprising this invention;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the calendar of this invention showing one of the information carrying cubes in exploded view;
FIG. 3 is a plan view of one of the information carry ing cubes in unfolded condition;
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3 showing another information carrying cube in unfolded condition;
FIG. 5 is a perspective view of one of the information carrying cubes in partially assembled condition;
FIG. 6 is a perspective partial view of the kit in which the components which comprise this invention may be supplied;
FIG. 7 is a diagrammatic view showing a portion of the cube receiving member and the various cubes.
Generally, the invention comprises a blank which may be folded to form a receiving member. A tab on said receiving member extends upwardly therefrom and is used to relay information relating to an advertisement. The receiving member is hollow and has a window on the front portion thereof, the window not being centered on that particular face but offset for a purpose to be described. The cubes carry information on their six faces. The cube relating to the months carries two pieces of information on each face thereof, the information being the name of the particular month. The cube carrying the information as to the day generally carries one printed date on each face except, since there are seven days and only six faces to the cube, one face carries two days. The remaining cubes which carry the numbers are numbered in a particular sequence since they have to be able to be assembled to cover the days. in any given month from I to 31. The cubes are arranged so that the desired information is on a common face and then inserted into the receiving member. Because the receiving member window is offset, the information on the month cube and on the one face of the day cube, in other words, those faces carrying two pieces of information, will show as only one date through the window of the receiving member because of the offset of the window on that face of the member.
Referring now to FIG. 1, there is shown the calendar generally designated as 10. It has a cube receiving portion 11 and an advertising tab portion 12 extending upwardly therefrom and adapted to carry advertising indicia information such as 13. Portion 11 has a top face 14, a front face 16, and a bottom face 15. Front face 16 has a rectangular window cut therein which is offset so as to produce a thin width flange l7 and a larger width flange 18. Portion 11 receives cubes I9, 20, 21, and 22 as shown in FIG. I.
Cube 19 is shown outside of portion 11 in FIG. 2. Face" 14 is shown to have a tab portion 14' which is attached to a lower portion 12' of tab portion 12 to form the open-ended hollow receiving portion 11. Boththe cubes 19, 20, 21 and 22 and the main member 10 may be constructed of cardboard, plastic, or other similar material.
Referring now to FIG. 3, cube 22 is shown in unfolded or flat condition. The cube consists of information carrying faces 23, 28, 31, 34, and 35. It should be noted that face 31 carries two pieces of information thereon. Extending from face 35 is tab portion 38 and extending from face 34 is tab portion 36 carrying an adhesive 37 thereon. Face 31 is hinged to face 34 and face 28 and has tab portions 32 and 33 on its outer edges. Face 28 is hinged to face 29 and 23. Face 29 has a tab portion 30 along one edge thereof and face 23 has tab portions 24 and 26 on opposite edges thereof. The tab portions have beveled edges such as at 25 on tab 24 or 27 on tab 26. The purpose of the beveled edges is to facilitate assembling the blank into a cube.
FIG. 4 shows the month cube 19 indisassembled or unfolded condition. The cube has information carrying faces 40, 43, 44, 46, 49, and 50. There are also tab portions 5], 48, 52, 47, 45, 42 and 41. Tab 52 has an adhesive portion 53 thereon. When assembled, tab 52 is positioned behind information carrying face 40 and is adhered to the backside thereof. Tab portion 48 is adapted to go behind face 50 and tab portion 47 is adapted to go behind face 44. Tab portion 45 positioned behind face 49 and tab portion 51 is positioned behind face 43 when the cube 19 is assembled. Tab 41 is behind face 50 along with tab 48 and tab 42 is behind face 44 together with tab 47. It should be noted that the information carried by cube 19 is equally spaced from the edge of the face on which it is carried.
Referring now to FIG. 5, cube is shown in partially assembled condition. Shown are information carrying faces 60, 61, 62, and the backside 67. Also shown is the backside of the face 65. Tab portions 64 and 66, carried respectively by faces 60 and 65, are folded so as to go behind face 67 which carries a tab 68 adapted to slide behind face 61. Face 61 carries a tab with an adhesive thereon (not shown) which is secured behind information carrying face 60 which is shown having the numeral 1 thereon. Face 62 has a tab portion 63 adapted to go behind another information carrying face not shown.
In relation to the tubes carrying the numerals, it is obvious that since there are a total of 12 combined information carrying faces which have to depict numbers from 1 to 31, a special arrangement of the numbers in each cube is necessary. There are several ways to accomplish this and the following is given only as one example. On one of the numeral carrying cubes the numerais 1, 4, 3, 5, 0, and 2 are placed on the respective six faces. On the second numerical cube, the numbers 1, 8, 2, 6, 0, and 7 are placed, the 6 being used both as the number 6 and the number 9. This arrangement facilitates the cubes being arranged to show any date from 1 to 31.
Referring now to FIG. 7, there are shown the information carrying faces of cubes 19, 21, and 20, and the face 16 of receiving portion 11.
The face 16 has large width flange l8 and narrow width flange 17. The width of flange 18 is depicted as C, the width of flange 17 is depicted as B, and the window width is depicted as A. The distance between the end of the window and the end of portion 1 1 is depicted as D. Cube 20 is shown in the far right hand corner of the Figure and carries a numeral in the area designated as 94. The height of the numeral is depicted as A and should be no greater than the dimension A on portion 11. The numeral should be centered laterally on the information carrying face of cube 20 so that the dimensions D in cube 20 are equal. The distance from the lower edge of the information carrying face of cube 20 to the numeral area 94 should be equal to the dimension B on portion 11. This is so that flange 17 will not cover up the lower portion of the numeral when it is inserted in portion 11. It should be noted that the numeral 6, if placed in area 94, should not extend the full vertical height of dimension A but should be centered on the face so that when it is inverted to depict numeral 9, a portion of the numeral is not covered up by flange 18.
Referring now to FIG. 6, there is shown a portion of a box carrying a plurality of main calendar members 10 in unfolded condition and a cube such as 20 in unfolded condition. While several main portion blanks 10 are shown and only one cube is shown, it is obvious that the device may be sold having four cube blanks and one main blank, all in unfolded condition whereby the user may assemble the same. In the alternative, any number of main member blanks may be packaged together with four times as many cube blanks. The latter case occurs when a large number is sold to an advertiser who then stamps his advertising on tab 12 and sends out the individual disassembled calendars to customers or clients. Each member 10 has advertising tab portion 12 lower portion 12 to which section 14 is adhered. There is adhesive on the underside of portion 14. Window containing face 16 is located between faces 14 and 15, the member being readily assembled by merely folding over the various faces and adhering the rear of section 14 to the top of section 12. The resultant configuration is shown in FIG. 2. Cube 20 is shown as having information carrying faces 71, 74, 75, 77, and 82 and tab portions 72, 73, 76, 78, 79, 81 and B3. The overall length of the unfolded cube blanks, for instance from the edge of tab 81 to the far edge of face 71 is less than the overall length of the member 10 in unfolded condition. The lateral width of each cube, for instance from the far edge of tab 83 to the far edge of tab 76, is equal to the width of each member 10 to enable the devices to be easily packaged together.
When a user receives the calendar in disassembled condition, he initially takes member 10, folds it up into the shape shown in FIG. 2 by adhering the rear side of section 14' to the top of section 12' to form a square receiving end configuration. He then takes the individual cube blanks and folds them over by placing the appropriate tabs behind the appropriate faces and secures the one tab which carries adhesive to the rear side of the appropriate information carrying face. After assembling the various components, he then selects the date he wishes to illustrate and aligns the cubes in proper orientation corresponding thereto. He then takes each cube and manually inserts it within member 10 and portion 11. When the cubes are all assembled, it will completely fill portion 11 or, in other words, the width of each information carrying face is one-fourth of the lateral width of member 10.
If desired, a transparent plastic sheet may be adhered to the front of the window on face 16 on portion 11 to prevent any dirt from entering the member 10 and to prevent the information carrying faces of the cubes from being marked or soiled. Also, the window in face 16 may be four smaller windows with an individual grating between each, the grating overlying the abutting portions of the four cubes placed in portion 11.
While the device has been described as made from blanks which can be assembled to form the various components, it is equally obvious that both the member 10 and the individual cube members may be cast from plastic and provided in such a form whereby all the user has to do is insert the cubes into the member 10. Any combination of coloring or transparency may be used. For instance, the member 10 may be completely transparent and the cubes all of a solid color when the de' vice is made from plastic. Also, if the device is rigidly cast from plastic, the ends of member may be closed and face 14 removed whereby the cubes can be inserted from the top to show the dates.
The method of making the blanks for the main member 10 and the individual cube members consists of merely stamping the blanks from a solid piece of plastic or cardboard and then running the blanks through a printer to deposit the necessary information on the various information carrying faces. In the alternative, user cooperation can be facilitated providing labels having adhesive thereon whereby the user receives the kit, together with the individual information stickers and then puts them onto the faces of the cubes and, if desired, onto the face of the advertising tab 12. The advertising tab 12 need not be included as a part of the overall device.
The preferred method of provision of the blanks, however, would be to partially assemble them by securing the adhesive areas in place thus leaving the user with the steps of unfolding the receiving member and insertion of the non-adhesive tab portions in place on the cube blanks and, finally, insertion of the cubes into the receiving member.
The receiving member can be provided with a simulated wood grain such as walnut and the individual cubes of one or varying solid colors.
While several embodiments of the invention have been described, and one embodiment illustrated, all of which relate to an eternal calendar, it will be apparent to one skilled in the art that other uses of the receiving member with various kinds of information containing cubes are possible. For example, as an educational device, the information cubes can contain a foreign word and the English translation on each face of each cube whereby either the foreign word or the English translation will show through the window of the receiving member. A series of the cubes could then be used to form a sentence' What is claimed is:
