Abstract

A device for clearing the capillary passage(s) of a spray nozzle of paint or the like which comprises a piston manually reciprocable in a cylinder, for emitting a blast of air from the outlet end of the cylinder and a hexagonal head which serves to clamp the spray nozzle against the outlet end of the cylinder to allow the air blast to pass through the capillary passage(s).

CYLINDER CONTAINING MANUALLY OPERABLE PISTON FOR CLEANING SPRAY NOZZLE PASSAGES WITH AIR BLAST This invention relates to the cleaning of nozzles used for spraying and like purposes, and is concerned with the clearance of the small passage(s) therein which tend from time to time to become clogged with paint, insecticide or other material being sprayed, or grit or the like therein.
The invention consists in a method of cleaning a nozzle used for spraying or like purposes, wherein the nozzle is removably accommodated in an enclosure, and an air blast is directed through the enclosure and the nozzle therein, in order to clear the nozzle passage or passages of matter therein.
The invention further consists in a device for cleaning a nozzle used for spraying and like purposes comprising an enclosure adapted removably to accommodate therein a nozzle to be cleaned, and manuallyoperable means for generating an air blast and directing it through said enclosure and the nozzle accommodated in it, in order to clear the nozzle passage or passages of matter therein.
The device may comprise a piston reciprocable in a cylinder. The cylinder outlet may comprise an open frame or chamber with a removable screw-on head or collar by which a nozzle can be retained in the frame or chamber while the'piston is reciprocated.
The invention will be clearly understood from the following description of one form (given, however, merely by way of example) which it may assume, and this description will be more readily followed by reference to the accompanying drawings wherein FIG. 1 represents component parts of a device according to the invention when detached: and
FIG. 2 represents in section the head of the assembled device ready for use.
In carrying the invention into effect in one convenient manner, as shown in the aforesaid drawings, a nozzle clearing or cleaning device comprises a cylindrical casing 1 closed at one end by a nylon or other bearing 2 in which is slidably mounted a rod 3 having attached to its inner end a piston 4 preferably in the form of a cup of leather or other suitable material having a tight slidable fit in the casing 1. The outer end of the rod 3 is provided with a disc 5, or like knob or grip.
A length 6 of the casing l at its opposite end is of reduced diameter, and externally screw-threaded, to receive an internally screw-threaded retainer 7. This length 6 of the casing is of a bore suitable to receive a jet nozzle 8, having a sliding fit therein so that a flange 9 of the nozzle is held firmly against the end of the casing 6 by an inner flange 10 which surrounds a mouth or aperture 11 of the retainer.
In using this device the retainer 7 is removed from the casing, and the rod'3 drawn out to move the piston 4 to the inner end of the casing. The nozzle 8 is then inserted in the open end of the casing portion 6, and the retainer screwed on to hold it firmly in position. A blow or steadier pressure, is then applied to the head 5 of the rod, forcing the piston to move along the casing and thereby forcing a blast of air through the capillary passage(s) in the nozzle 8 to clean and clear it/them of obstruction. If desired the piston may be reciprocated to impose air flow through the nozzle passages in each direction, once or several times. The retainer is then detached and the nozzle removed for further use.
From the above description it will be seen that the invention provides a simple device for rapid clearance of obstruction in the passages of spray nozzles, but it should be understood that the invention is not limited solely to the details of the form described above which may be modified in order to meet various conditions and requirements encountered, without departing from the scope of the invention.
We claim: 7
l. A device for clearance of a nozzle used for spraying and like purposes, comprising means forming a tubular passage with manually operable piston means for forcing a blast of air therethrough, said passage having means at its air-outlet end to form a seating for freely and removably accommodating the nozzle being cleared, and detachable retainer means for clamping the nozzle to the outlet end of the tubular passage while the air blast escaping from the passages passes through the nozzle to clear it.
2. A device according to claim 1 wherein the retainer means and the said means forming a tubular passage are screw-threaded for releasable engagement with one another.
3. A device according to claim ll wherein the retainer means has an open end formed with flanges by which the nozzle is held against said passage outlet during an air-blasting operation.
4. A device according to claim 1 wherein the retainer means is in the form of a tubular head formed with screw threads screwable onto screw threads on the outlet end of said means forming the tubular passage.
5. A device according to claim 1 wherein the retainer means is in the form of a nut-like hexagonal head adapted to be screwed on to the end of the tubular passage in order to hold the nozzle thereagainst.

Claims (5)

1. A device for clearance of a nozzle used for spraying and like purposes, comprising means forming a tubular passage with manually operable piston means for forcing a blast of air therethrough, said passage having means at its air-outlet end to form a seating for freely and removably accommodating the nozzle being cleared, and detachable retainer means for clamping the nozzle to the outlet end of the tubular passage while the air blast escaping from the passages passes through the nozzle to clear it.
2. A device according to claim 1 wherein the retainer means and the said means forming a tubular passage are screw-threaded for releasable engagement with one another.
3. A device according to claim 1 wherein the retainer means has an open end formed with flanges by which the nozzle is held against said passage outlet during an air-blasting operation.
4. A device according to claim 1 wherein the retainer means is in the form of a tubular head formed with screw threads screwable onto screw threads on the outlet end of said means forming the tubular passage.
5. A device according to claim 1 wherein the retainer means is in the form of a nut-like hexagonal head adapted to be screwed on to the end of the tubular passage in order to hold the nozzle thereagainst.
