Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. PETERS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,500, dated May 12, 1863.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. PETERS, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have iivented a new and useful Convertible Chamber-Lamp and Lantern 5 and I do hereby de- Clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification.
This improvement consists in, first, theprovision of a handled or chamber lamp adapted for customary use about the house, and for ocasional attachment to a glazed screen or s'lell, so as to combine the advantages of a lantern and of a convenient hand-lamp second, a provision for the double purpose of equalizing the in-draft and securing the panes.
Figure lis a perspective view of the lamp and shell detached. Fig. 2 is an axial section of the shell.
A is a complete chamber or handlamp, having the customary ring or handle B.
C C C Iare three studs or projections from the neck or upper portion of the lamp'reservoir, adapted to enter gates D in the bottom E of the glazed shell or lantern-case F, and be secured by a partial rotation of the lamp. The handle B and lreservoir A, being at all times external with respect to the shell F, never become overheated, so as to interfere with the uniformity of combustion or the use of the lamp proper for indoor purposes upon the withdrawal of cas'e. The lower edges of the panes G are secured by guards H, which are formed by being punched up from the tin bottom E of the casing, so as to leave apertures I for the in-draft, to which the guards H act as deectors to disperse the draft and to prevent any sudden gust coming in contact with the ame. The guards H are thus made to serve two uses. The lanteruchimney'is traversed at its lower part by a perforated dome or arched diaphragm, J, and near its upper part by an annular ascending ange or diaphragm, K.
L are apertures placed equidistant around the chimney-sides between the dome J and the lian ge K.
M is a conicalcowl, whose scalloped sides form a series of upper openings, N, just above the flange K.
The above-described series of diaphragms, apertures, 85o., acts to effectually check and disseminate any sudden gusts which may blow into the top of the lantern, while the in-draft apertures I perform a similar service for the lower part.
I claim herein as new and ot'my inventionl. The chamber or handled house-lamp A B, provided with studs C C C, projecting from the upper portion of the reservoir and adapted to interlock within the gated bottom of a lautern-case, F, the whole being constructed and adapted for the separate uses of a lantern and a house-lamp, as set forth.
2. The described arrangement of the guards H and apertures I, for the double purpose of retaining the panes and of dedecting the indrat't, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention Ihereunto set my hand.
CHARLES H. PETERS.
Witnesses GEO. H. KNIGHT, E. P. KUNIILER.
