Be it known that 1, WILLIAM 8.13. DILLON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Hooks or Hitching-Snaps, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates particularly to improve ments in the class of books known as sisterhooks, in which the book of one of the engaging parts or bills thereof forms a mousing for that of the other; and it is especially designed as an improvement on the sister-hook I5 shown and described in a former application for United States Letters Patent filed by me September 11, 1885, Serial No. 176,849, and

allowed October 30, 1885.

My invention consists, in the first part, of a harness-hook or hitching-snap composed of two engaging parts having shouldered shanks adapted to receive the ends of the hook-bills, a recessed loop on one of said engaging parts adapted to receive the bent portion or elbow in the shank of the other, and the inwardlybeveled tips ofsaid hook-bills forming a mouth for readily guiding and receiving a ring or other connection.

My invention further consists in the combination, with a harness hook or hitching-snap composed of two engaging parts having shouldered shanks adapted to receive the ends of the hook-bills, and a recessed loop on one of said engaging part-s adapted to receive the bent 5 portion or elbow in the shank of the other, of a supplemental loop made integral with the loop of one of said engaging parts and having a cross-bar provided with an upright pin or tongue, whereby one end of the hitching or 40 other strap is securelyheld in place without sewing, after first passing through both loops of said engaging parts.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of a harness or hitching snap embodying my invention in its preferred form, it being shown in place at the end of a strap and engaging a ring; Fig. 2, a plan of the same, showing the ring in cross-section; Fig. 3, a bottom plan of one of the engaging parts or hooks shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a similar view of the other engaging-hook; Fig. 5, a plan of a modified form of my invention; Fig. 6, a longitudinal elevation of the hook shown in Fig. 5, a ring about to be engaged by the same being shown in dotted lines and broken off; and Fig. 7, another modification in plan.

A B represent a pair of hooks, forming the parts or sections which engage one another in opposite directions to form, when together, a sister or mousinghook. Both hooks A and B are provided with loops at and b, by which they are connected with a strap, 0.

1) represents an ordinary ring, which is engaged by the bills 0 d of said hooks. The ends of the bills 0 cl are made slightly tapered and engage shoulders of on the inner faces of the shanks of both the said hooks, thereby firmly holding the parts against rearward play while engaging a ring. The inner edges of the tips of both bills 0 and d are beveled off, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4:, to form a mouth or ready guiding-entrance, E, for the ring.

B is a notch in the loop of hook B, adapted to receive the bent portion or elbow F in the shank of hook A, which slightly pivots therein 7 5 when the forward ends or tips of the two hooks are parted on engagement with a ring.

G represents a supplemental loop made integral with the loop of hook A, (or, in fact, it may be made so with either hook, as is obvi- 8o ous,) and provided with a cross-bar,'g, having a central upright tongue or pin, This loop G serves the purpose of a buckle upon the rear end of the hook, and is adapted to receive the end of the strap 0 without any necessity of sewing, in the manner clearly shown in Fig. 1, and thereby holds the two bills or hook ends 0 d of the snap flexibly but firmly together, so as to obviate any accidental disengagement'with the ring, and at the same time permit an easy engagement therewith, when desired.

In the modified form of hook shown in Figs.

5 and 6 the hook portion or bill of the engaging-section B is omitted and the end h of the 5 shank turned up or made flaring, and also the adjacent face of the bill c of hook A hollowedout or recessed at I to receive and guide the ring to place within the hook. The shoulder on section B and the end of the bill of section A are made the same and for the same purpose, as previously described; but the body of said bill a is made heavier, so as to make due allowance in strength for the absence of its sister-hook d.

It is obvious that the supplemental loop G could be omitted and the strap connected with the loops of both sections A and B by sewing or otherwise, as in my said former application, and asister-hook provided both operative and complete.

In the modification shown in Fig. 7 the pin or tongue 9 depends from the center of the cross-bar of loop a, instead of standing upright from the center of cross-bar g. It is quite obvious that such a construction could be used to connect the strap with the snap and operate with a like effect with the construction shown in the former figures.

I claim 1. In a snap-hook, the combination of two parts or sections, A and B, the outer ends of which together form the hook portion and the opposite end of each of which is provided with a loop, and one of said sections, A, is provided with abentshank or elbow, F, and the other section, B, is provided with a notch or recess, B, in the side of its loop, adapted to receive the bent shank,which slightly pivots therein, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a snap-hook, the combination of two parts or sections, A and B, the outer ends of which together form the hook portion, and the opposite end of one of the sections is provided with one loop and the same end of the other section is provided with a loop and a supplemental loop fornied integral therewith, said supplemental loop being further provided with a cross-bar having a pin, one of said sections, A, is provided with a bent shank, F, and the other section, B, is provided with a notch or recess, B, inside of its loop, adapted to receive the bent shank which slightly pivots therein, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
