WIRE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 384,016, dated June 5, 1888.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that l, JESSE J. BUoHANAN, of Bridgeport, in the county of Lawrence and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wire Fences, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has relation to wire fences, and has for its object the construction of wire fences which will be simple in construction, and light, strong, and durable; and it consists, in connection with horizonal fencewires, ofa hollow metallic post and bent and twisted wirefasteners.
It further consists of horizontal fence-wires and bent and twisted wire-fasteners, in combination with a hollow metallic post having a heavy tile base,all constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a front view of my invention with part of the post broken away and the base in vertical section, and Fig. 2 is a side view thereof with the lower part of the post and the base in central vertical section.

The twisting together of the ends of the wires 9 acts to draw up the wires 8 firmly against the post and hold them there. The block or base 2 is set a short distance below the surface of the ground,as shown, to render-the post steady and protect the base against the action of frost.
My invention presents numerous advantages, viz: It is cheaply made. The fencewires will not pull out, as they are securely held by the twisted wire-fasteners. The latter present a simple and effective means for tightening the fence-wires against the post. The fence will not lean over or be blown down by wind or storm, owing to the heavy base and light tubular post, and the post being of iron will not decay nor burn,as wooden posts are apt to.
In case a new fence-wire is required to be put up, the old one can readily be removed by untwisting the ends ofthe fastener and the new one be easily and quickly secured in place by bending the fastener about it and the post and twisting its ends together.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improvement in wire fences, the combination, with a hollow metallic post, 1, having perforations 10, of horizontal fence-wires 8 and wire supports and fasteners 9, passing through the perforations in the post, then bent around the wires 8 and back of the post, and having their ends twisted together, as at 11, substantially as described.
