G. S. GHAMBERLIN.
BOTTLE STOPBER.
Patented MayZZ, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE S. CHAMBERLIN, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 383,277, dated May 22, 18 88. Application filed March 30, 1888. Serial No. 263,038. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. CHAMBER- LIN, of the city and county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side View of my improved bottle-stopper, showing the sliding collar and exposing the spring which holds the top in position when closed. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing position of device when open; also, showing slot and thumb-screw for adjusting parts shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a top view of thedisk or cover when closed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to bottle stoppers which are designed to exclude from the contents of a bottle extraneous matteras dust, insects, &c.and to facilitate the rapid, convenient, and sanitary handling of the same by barkeepers, waiters, and other persons.
It consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts of a bottle-stopper designed to be secured to the neck of the bottle, whereby it may be readily opened for the reception or delivery of the contents or closed to protect the same, as will be fully described on reference to the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings, A, B, and Orepresentthree parts of a stopper, made of any suitable material and of a proper form to open and close the same by sliding it up and down the neck of the bottle.
The part A is a collar, preferably made of metal and having the upper and lower edges properly serrated to allow of being bent inwardly; or the edges may be spun or otherwise formed into the proper shape to engage the neckof the bottle to prevent the collar from slipping over the flange at the top of theneck.
The part B is an upright shank secured to the collar A by an adjusting thumbserew, D, and hinged to the top 0.
The part 0 is a disk hinged to the upright B and held in position by the spiral spring F. The top 0 is provided on the under side with a pad, (marked E,) which may be of felt, rubber, leather, or other yielding material designed to close the mouth of the bottle.
All the parts of the device are operated by grasping the collar A, the ends of which are free, and sliding it down to the shoulder of the bottle or other projection, whereby the part 0 will be brought against the side of the lip of the bottle and drawn close to it by the spring F, thus holding it in a position for receiving or delivering the contents of theboltle, and by sliding the collar upward the bottle may be closed.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bottle-stopper comprising the sleeve A, upright 13, and cover 0, the upright being slotted and adjustably secured to the sleeve by a set-screw passing through the slot, and the cover being hinged to the upright and provided with a spring, whereby it is normally held in a closed position, as set forth.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 28th day of Maxed-1888.
GEO. S. OHAM BERLIN.
