Primary Examiner-Lawrence Charles Attorney, Agent, or FirmKenneth S. Goldfarb [57] ABSTRACT A striping applicator comprising a container having an applicator assembly disposed therein. The applicator assembly includes a fabric cover. A cap is threaded on the neck of the container and is provided with means for enabling the cap to be freely rotatable throughout 360 on the container. The cap includes an opening through which the cover extends and guide means spaced from the cover so that a line may be coated of a thickness substantially equivalent to the diameter of the cover and at predetermined locations dependent upon the spacing of the guide means from the cover.
1 Claim, 5 Drawing Figures 1 STRIPING APPLHCATOR This invention relates to a striping applicator especially adapted for the application of adhesives, pigments, glues, and coatings in an accurate manner.
In the manufacture of automobiles, various types of weather striping, gaskets, and the like are employed, especially about door and window openings. in order to properly secure these materials in place, it is necessary to apply a coating of a suitable adhesive in a line of predetermined thickness. The use of a brush or like applicator has proven unsatisfactory because varying amounts of material are then resultant from the successive drippings of the brush in the adhesive, and the fumes from the open pots of quick drying adhesives are undesirable. Further, brush application often results in crooked and uneven lines. The present invention overcomes these difficulties by providing for an applicator which carries its own supply of adhesive, which is carefully metered out during application, which includes guide means for insuring a straight line, and which is easy for the operator to grasp and utilize.
Still further objects and features of this invention reside in the provision of a striping applicator that is simple in construction, capable of being used to apply liquids of various viscosities, which may employ means for adjustably spacing the guide means a desired distance from the cover and which may be refilled and reused in a convenient manner.
These, together with the various ancillary objects and features of the present invention, which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this striping applicator, preferred embodiments of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, by way of example only, wherein:
FIG. 1 is an exploded elevational view of the applicator with parts thereof being broken away to show other parts in section for clarity;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the cap;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail view illustrating the component parts of the applicator in an assembled condition;
FIG. 4 is a partial perspective view illustrating the manner in which the striping applicator is used; and,
FIG. 5 is a partial elevational view with parts being shown in section of a modified form of the invention.
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral generally designates an embodiment of the striping applicator including three main components, a container 12, an applicator assembly 14, and a cap 116 provided with an integrally formed guide 18. The container 12 may be formed of glass, plastic or other suitable material and is provided with a neck having a lip 22. The neck is externally threaded at 24 and the threads 24 terminate well above the shoulder 26 at the bottom of the neck 20.
The applicator assembly 14 includes a projecting portion 28 adapted to be inserted into the neck 20 and includes a retaining ring 30 provided with a tapered opening 32 therethrough. The retaining ring has a pair of spaced concentric flanges 34 and 36 extending above the opening 32 and the flange 36 is swaged to hold a fabric cover 38 in position with the swaged portion 40 overlying the periphery of the cover and forming a ledge 42. The cover 38 may be of any suitable material, preferably fabric, having a pile or like applicator surface 44. The lower end of the projecting portion 28 is swaged as at 46 to hold the lower ring 48 of a valve assembly 50 within the applicator assembly. The valve assembly includes a valve head 54 including a tapered portion 56 and a restricted portion 58 which extends through the opening 32 and engages the cover 38. Integrally formed with the valve head 54 and ring 48 are a plurality of helical springs 60 of any suitable resilient material.
The cap 16 includes side walls 62 which are provided with internal threads 64 which terminate well below the top 66 of the cap. The lower edge of the side walls 62 engage ledge 26. The top 66 has an opening 68 therethrough through which the dome-shaped cover 38 extends, the cover being extended in its dome-shape by action of the spring 60 which forced the valve head 54 against the cover 38. The guide 18 lies flush with the side walls 62 and rises thereabove and has a flat guide surface 70 arranged in spaced relation to the opening 68 and hence to that portion of the cover 38 which extends through the opening 68.
Because of the location of the threads 64 and 24, the cap, once it has been screwed down upon the neck 20, is freely rotatable throughout 360. The cap holds the applicator assembly in the container.
In use, and with the container 12 filled with a suitable fluid, such as an adhesive, the device is positioned so that the cover 38 engages the surface to be coated with the guide surface 70 engaging an edge 77 of the object to be coated whereupon the movement of the entire applicator in the direction of arrow 79 will provide a suitable straight line or coating 80.
An alternate form of the invention is shown in FIG. 5, wherein the cap 116 has an integral guide portion 118 extending outwardly from the top of the side wall 162 of the cap 116. This guide 118 is provided with a vertically extending slot 1120 therethrough. An L- shaped guide plug 122 is mounted on the guide 118 by a suitable bolt or like fastener 124 which extends through the slot 126 so that the position of the guide plug 122 can be adjusted in any direction as indicated by arrow 126.
A latitude of modification, substitution, and change is intended in the foregoing disclosure, and in some instances, some features of the invention will be employed without a corresponding use of other features.
I claim:
1. A striping applicator comprising a container having an externally threaded neck provided with a lip, an applicator assembly disposed in said neck and having a head extending outwardly of said neck and resting on said lip, said head having cover means for fluid application, a cap secured on said neck and engaging said head, said cap having an opening therein through which said cover means extends, guide means eccentrically secured to said surface and extending beyond said cover means, said guide means being integrally formed with said cap, said cap including a side wall, said guide means being integral and flush with said side wall and forming an extension thereof, said cap being freely rotatable throughout 360 about said neck without moving said cover means with respect to said opening, and valve means for controlling fluid flow to said cover means, said cover means engaging said valve means, said cap holding said applicator assembly in said neck.
