Abstract
In a freight car, a vertically extending nailable metal door post including a first outer doorway member of generally C-shaped configuration and a second longitudinally spaced inner reinforcement member; said first member having flat outer transversely extending doorway wall, a pair of inner and outer laterally spaced longitudinal sections connecting with the doorway wall, and a nail groove forming transverse flange section spaced longitudinally inwardly of the doorway and laterally outward of the inner longitudinal section and having a convex bulbous portion extending from the inner longitudinal section towards the outer longitudinal section and a transverse flat end portion connected outwardly to the bulbous portion, said outer longitudinal section having a longitudinally extending elongated attachment portion connecting with the vehicle side wall; said second member being spaced longitudinally inward of the outer doorway member and being of generally U-shaped configuration and having a transverse flange including a first flange section having vertically spaced alternating recessed and protruding flange portions to define the bulbous portion the entranceway of a nail groove, a second intermediate transverse portion to define with the transverse end portion of the doorway member the rest of the groove, and a third nail bending and curved post-reinforcing portion connecting with the intermediate transverse portion and having a flat longitudinal end part against the inside of the longitudinal section of the doorway member, said second member further having an inner longitudinal wall connecting with the transverse flange, an inner transverse wall extending toward the side wall of the car and connecting with the inner longitudinal wall of the second member, and an inner longitudinal side wall attachment flange portion connecting with the inner transverse wall of the second member and with the attachment portion of the doorway member connecting with the side wall of the freight car. A modified nailable door post uses welded-in-place elements between the two pieces of the post to define nail receiving grooves.

A modified nailable door post uses welded-inplace elements between the two pieces of the post to define nail receiving grooves.
4 Claims, 5 Drawing Figures NAILABLE DOOR POST BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention This invention relates to door posts and, in particular, door posts for railway freight cars where the door post is of the nailable type, i.e. nail receiving grooves are provided in the door post.
2. Description of the Prior Art It is heretofore known to provide for nailable floorv sections in railway cars such as in US. Pat. No. 2,910,016. It is also known to provide for wall constructions in freight vehicles that receive nails for the attachment of objects thereto, such as shown by US.
Pat. No. 3,123,018. Nailable stripping mounted on SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is, therefore,a general object of this invention to provide for a door post construction that is durable and has integral therewith means to receive nails for attachment of lading strap anchor structure.
Still another object of this invention is to provide for a two-piece post construction which includes two separate pieces that when placed together and anchored to the side wall of the vehicle define a groove arrangement through which may be extended nails that hold a lading strap anchor arrangement.
A further object of the invention is to provide for a nailable do'or post wherein one'of the two pieces is dimpled or recessed so as to form with the other piece the nail receiving groove. An alternate form provides for insertion of spacer elements that are welded to the two wall that is generally flat and defines the doorway of the vehicle and further comprises an outer longitudinally extending flange section 36 that faces outwardly of the car and connects with the transverse doorway wall 34.- The flange section 36 is provided with a vehicle side wall attachment portion 37 at its free end and an inner longitudinal wall section of shorter length than the flange section 36 is parallel to the flange section 36 and is attached also to the transverse doorway wall 34.,A nail groove forming transverse terminal flange section 40 of curved configuration extends inwardly from and is connected to the section 38 and includes the first inner convex bulbous portion 42 and a transverse end portion 44. The reinforcement member 32 which is longitudinally inwardly of and abuts against the member is comprised of an outer transverse dimpled vertically extending flange 46 which includes a flange section 47 at the innermost part thereof which flange section 47 comprises a plurality of alternating vertically spaced recess portions 48 and protruding portions 50 to define with the nail groove forming transverse flange pieces and define between them the nail receiving grooves.
Another object of the inventionis to provide for a nail bending and stiffening arrangement in the nailable doorpost construction "These and other objects will become apparent from reference to the following description, attached claims and appended drawings.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT With reference now to the drawings, and in particular with reference to FIG. 1, there is shown the interior of section 40 aplurality of vertically spaced grooves 28 (see FIGS. 2 and 3). The protruding portions 50 lie against the bulbous portion 42 as best seen in FIG. 3. The flange 46 inwardly of the flange section 47 is provided with an intermediate transverse nail groove portion 52 which is connected to the nail bending and reinforcing curved terminal end portion 54 that is provided with a flat longitudinal end part 56 that lies against the flange section 36 of the doorway member 30 of the nailable post 18. The portion 54 being curved causes a nail entered into a groove 28 to be bent to prevent removal of the nail and also this section 54 since it has its end 56 against the front flange 36 adds reinforcement to-both members 30 and 32. The reinforcement member 32 is further provided with a second inner longitudinal wall 58 that lies in a generally common plane with the longitudinal inner wall 38 and cooperates therewith to define the entrance of the nail groove 28 and acts as a face to receive the lading strap anchor arrangement 24. The nail 22 in addition to being bent by the reinforcement member 32 is also bent by the bulbous portion 42 and the curved or concave recess portion 48. This arrangement makes accidental removal of the nail from the post extremely difficult. The post member 32 is further provided with an inner transverse wall 60 connected to the longitudinal wall 58 and with a longitudinal end attachment portion 62 connecting with the transverse wall 60. This inner longitudinal terminal side wall attachment flange portion 62 is held against the attachment portion 37 held to the side wall 12 by the rivets 19.
FIGS. 4 and 5 show a modified form of the door post and is designated as 18'. Wherever the numbers are primed this indicates that it has parts that are like the first embodiment. The door post 18 is essentially like the door post 18 except that the nail groove 28' is differently constructed in that the reinforcement member 64 replaces the reinforcement member 32 of the first The foregoing description and drawings merely explain and illustrate the invention and the invention is not limited thereto, except insofar as the appended claims are so limited, as those skilled in the art who have the disclosure before them will be able to make modifications and variations'therein without departing from the scope of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In a freight car, a vertically extending nailable metal door post for the car sidewall including:
a first outerdoorway member of generally C-shaped configuration and a second longitudinally spaced inner reinforcement member,
said first member having an outer transversely extending doorway wall, a pair of inner and outer laterally spaced longitudinal sections connecting with the doorway wall, and a nail groove forming transverse flange section spaced longitudinally inwardly of the doorway wall and laterally outward of the inner longitudinal section and having a convex bulbous portion extending from the inner longitudinal section towards the outer longitudinal section and a transverse end portion connected outwardly to the bulbous portion,
said outer longitudinal section having a longitudinally extending elongated attachment portion connecting with the car side wall,
said second member being spaced longitudinally inward of the outer doorway member and being of generally U-shaped configuration and having a transverse flange including a first flange section having vertically spaced alternating recessed and protruding flange portions to define with the bulbous portion the entrancewayof the nail groove, a second intermediate transverse portion to define with the transverse end portion of the doorway member the rest of the groove, and a third nail bending and curved post-reinforcing portion connecting with the intermediate transverse portion and having a flat longitudinal end part against the inside of the longitudinal section of the doorway member,
said second member further having an inner longitudinal wall connecting with the transverse flange, an inner transverse wall extending toward the side wall of the car and connecting with the inner longitudinal wall of the second member, and an inner longitudinal side wall attachment flange portion connecting with the inner transverse wall of the second member'and with the attachment portion of the doorway member connecting with the side wall of the freight car. 2. ln a freight car having a side wall, a vertically extending nailable door post including a pair of longitudinally spaced first outer and second inner post members,

said second inner post member having a generally U- shaped configuration including a pair of outer and inner transverse flanges and an inner longitudinal flange connecting the transverse flanges,
said inner transverse wall including an inner convex bulbous part extending from the inner longitudinal wall' toward the outer longitudinal wall and an outer terminal part connected outwardly to the bulbous part, and said outer transverse flange including an inner flange section defining with the bulbous part an entranceway of a nail receiving groove, a curved intermediate transverse portion to define with the terminal part a remaining portion of the groove, and a nail bending and curved postreinforcing portion connecting with the intermediate transverse portion and having a flat longitudinal end part against said outer longitudinal wall, and
a first anchor portion extending from said outer longitudinal wall in alignment therewith and connected with the side wall of the car and a second anchor portion extending transversely from the inner transverse flange and longitudinally overlaying said first anchor portion to connect the inner transverse flange to said first anchor portion. 3. The invention according to claim 2, and said concave portion being defined by vertical dimpling of the outer transverse flange providing for alternating vertically spaced protuberances and indentations complementally engageable with the bulbous part to define a plurality of nail receiving grooves. 4. The invention according to claim 2, and a plurality of vertically spaced elements welded to the bulbous part and the concave portion to define a plurality of spaced nail receiving grooves.
Claims (4)
1. In a freight car, a vertically extending nailable metal door post for the car side wall including: a first outer doorway member of generally C-shaped configuration and a second longitudinally spaced inner reinforcement member, said first member having an outer transversely extending doorway wall, a pair of inner and outer laterally spaced longitudinal sections connecting with the doorway wall, and a nail groove forming transverse flange section spaced longitudinally inwardly of the doorway wall and laterally outward of the inner longitudinal section and having a convex bulbous portion extending from the inner longitudinal section towards the outer longitudinal section and a transverse end portion connected outwardly to the bulbous portion, said outer longitudinal section having a longitudinally extending elongated attachment portion connecting with the car side wall, said second member being spaced longitudinally inward of the outer doorway member and being of generally U-shaped configuration and having a transverse flange including a first flange section having vertically spaced alternating recessed and protruding flange portions to define with the bulbous portion the entranceway of the nail groove, a second intermediate transverse portion to define with the transverse end portion of the doorway member the rest of the groove, and a third nail bending and curved post-reinforcing portion connecting with the intermediate transverse portion and having a flat longitudinal end part against the inside of the longitudinal section of the doorway member, said second member further having an inner longitudinal wall connecting with the transverse flange, an inner transverse wall extending toward the side wall of the car and connecting with the inner longitudinal wall of the second member, and an inner longitudinal side wall attacHment flange portion connecting with the inner transverse wall of the second member and with the attachment portion of the doorway member connecting with the side wall of the freight car.
2. In a freight car having a side wall, a vertically extending nailable door post including a pair of longitudinally spaced first outer and second inner post members, said first outer post member having a generally C-shaped configuration including a pair of inner and outer longitudinally spaced walls and a pair of inner and outer transverse walls. said second inner post member having a generally U-shaped configuration including a pair of outer and inner transverse flanges and an inner longitudinal flange connecting the transverse flanges, said inner transverse wall including an inner convex bulbous part extending from the inner longitudinal wall toward the outer longitudinal wall and an outer terminal part connected outwardly to the bulbous part, and said outer transverse flange including an inner flange section defining with the bulbous part an entranceway of a nail receiving groove, a curved intermediate transverse portion to define with the terminal part a remaining portion of the groove, and a nail bending and curved post-reinforcing portion connecting with the intermediate transverse portion and having a flat longitudinal end part against said outer longitudinal wall, and a first anchor portion extending from said outer longitudinal wall in alignment therewith and connected with the side wall of the car and a second anchor portion extending transversely from the inner transverse flange and longitudinally overlaying said first anchor portion to connect the inner transverse flange to said first anchor portion.
3. The invention according to claim 2, and said concave portion being defined by vertical dimpling of the outer transverse flange providing for alternating vertically spaced protuberances and indentations complementally engageable with the bulbous part to define a plurality of nail receiving grooves.
4. The invention according to claim 2, and a plurality of vertically spaced elements welded to the bulbous part and the concave portion to define a plurality of spaced nail receiving grooves.
