COMBINED WARDROBE; BUREAU, AND WASH STAND. N0. 382,400. PatentedMay 8; 1888 ATTORNEYS.
Nrrn STATES AATEENT FFIGE.
HENRY F. WVULFF, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MAX B. MAYER AND ABRAHAM COHEN, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED WARDROBE, BUREAU, AND WASH STAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 382,400, dated May 8, 1888.
Application filed December 17, 1887. Serial No. 258,182. (No model.)
To aZZ whom. it may concern.-
. Be it known that I, HENRY F. WULFF, of
San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Combined \Vardrobe, Bureau, and \Vash- Stand, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description.
This invention relates to an article of household furniture designed for use as a wardrobe,
[0 bureau, and wash-stand, and has for its object to provide a conveniently-arranged, substantial, and inexpensive structure of this character.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations ofparts of the piece of furniture, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front view of the piece of furniture in closed condition. Fig. 2 is a front view of it in open condition. Fig. 3 is a plan 5 view with the wardrobe in horizontal section on the line 00 m in Fig. 2, and Fig; 4. is a vertical section taken through the washstand and on the line y yin Fig. 3.
The herein-described article of furniture is made with a main part or section formed as a wardrobe, A, which is adapted to be closed at its upper part by front doors, A A hung by hinges a to the opposite sides of the wardrobe body or case. These doors A A are provided at their lower ends with outwardly-projecting shelves or ledges a a, which overlap the tops of two lower bureau and wash-stand structures, B O,which are held by hinges b a, respectively, to opposite sides of the wardrobe, and
are adapted to close itslower portion at the front. Thewardrobe case or body is shown fitted with a series of lower horizontal shelves, a a central vertical partition, a, and upper shelves, a, at the left of said partition, and the upper right-hand compartment is provided with a series of hooks, D, like hooks being also fixed to the inside of the wardrobe-doors, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
It will be understood that I do not limit myself to the particular arrangement of the interior of the wardrobe shown and above de scribed, as the shelves and partitions may be omitted, or may be substituted by drawers, which may be arranged in any preferred way.
To the outer face of'the wardrobe-door A is fastened, by screws or otherwise, one side or half portion of a mirror, A the other side or half of which laps onto the door A when both doors are closed. The mirror then stands at the transverse center of the wardrobe to give a pleasing finish to the entire piece of furniture, and may be conveniently used while making or finishing the toilet. Drawers or boxes E E are provided on the door ledges or shelves at a, for holding brushes, combs, or 6 other toilet requisites, and bracket shelves F F are fastened to the outer faces of the closed doors, and appear at each side of the mirror, and are intended for holding toilet preparations or bric-a-brac.
The bureau structure B is shown provided with horizontal shelves 1) and an upper verti' cally-ranging partition, I)", forming compartments for holding ladies hats, garments, or other articles, and the wash-stand structure 7 O is also provided with horizontal shelves 0 and vertical partition 0 forming compartments for receiving toilet vessels or requisites. The interiors of the structures B C may be subdivided by shelves and partitions in any pre- 30 ferrcd manner, or may be fitted with drawers of any convenient size. A marble slab, c, is placed on the top shelf, 0, of the wash-stand to receive a wash-loow1, G, and soap-dish H in the upper compartment of the stand. 8
It is always desirable to prevent spattering of the walls or furniture near a wash-stand, and for this purpose I have made the wash-stand O with a pocket or slideway at or just inside of its front wall to receive a metal or wood 0 plate or board, I, which may be lifted up and supported to protect the wall when the washstand is swung open. This plate I is shown provided with hinged wings or extensions J J at opposite edges, and these wings may he un- 5 folded forward after the main spattenplate I is lifted to practically inclose the top of the wash-stand and the toiletbowl, except at the front, to prevent sidewise spattering of the water onto the furniture or floor. When the I00 side plates or wings J are folded flat to the main plate I, all three plates may be lowered into the pocket of the wash-stand to allow the latter to be swung into closed position against the front of the wardrobe. A towel-rack, K, is fitted at the side of the wardrobe next the wash-stand, and a towel hung on this rack-bar would protect the side of the wardrobe from being spattered by water from the wash-bowl should the wing-plate J not be fitted to the main spatter-plate I at that end of the washstand. The side extensions or wings, J, may or may not be fitted to the main plate I, as may be preferred.
Any suitable pin or catch device may be fitted, iii the wash-stand to hold the spatterplate I or plates J J in raised position. When the plates J J are used, they will when unfolded and by resting on the top of the Washstand hold the entire spatter-plate structure in raised position.
The wardrobe A and also the bureau B and wash-stand G are provided with caster-wheel supports L, allowing the entire piece of furniture to be easily moved about while cleaning house, and allowing the side structures B O to be easily opened or closed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp 1. A combined wardrobe, bureau, and washstand constructed with a main wardrobe-section, A, provided with hinged upper doors, A A having lower ledges or shelves, a a respectiv'ely, and bureau and wash-stand struct- 5 top covers to the wash-stand and bureau, sub- 0 stantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the wardrobe having two doors hinged at the sides and closing toward the center, of the mirror A fastened to one of the wardrobe-doors and overlapping 1,5
the other door, substantially as described.
3. In a combined wardrobe, bureau, and wash-stand, comprising hinged sections A B O, the doors of section A having ledges a a,
covering the tops of seotionsB 0 when all are 5o closed, and provided ator near said ledges with toilet-boxes E E, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a combined wardrobe, bureau, and
wash-stand, comprising hinged sections A B 55 G, the doors A A hinged at the sides of the section A and closing toward the center, said doors having ledges aa", covering the tops of sections B 0 when all are closed, and provided at said ledges with toilet-boxes E, a mirror, 60
A secured to the door A", and overlapping the other door, substantially as and for the purposes described.
HENRY F. WULFF.
