Abstract
A window frame structure in combination with a building structure disclosed, the window frame having header, sill and jamb members, and it is integrally joined to the building structure. Means are provided for positioning the frame relative to the structure at a preset elevation by means of a clip member slideably moveable in a guideway positioned along at least one of the jamb members. The clip member is then permanently connected to the structure at a preset elevation whereby the frame may be quickly and accurately located with respect to the structure.

SHEET 3 Bf 3 WINDOW FRAME STRUCTURE SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to the combination of a prefabricated window frame with a building structure having an opening for receiving the frame.
In office buildings and other structures it is often the practice to prefabricate window frames and then to erect them at the job site. While there is considerable saving in the preparation of the window frames at manufacturing plants, the labor and time required for precisely positioning the prefabricated frames with respect to the building structure is often costly. Heretofore, one of the means of erecting a frame at a site would be to set each frame in place by laboriously determining the elevation at which each frame should be set and then setting the frame, carefully checking elevations with each setting.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a simple yet exact means of predetermining the elevation at which each window frame shall be placed with respect to the building structure so that the setting of the frames may be done accurately and with a minimum of labor and time once the erection job begins. A further object is to permit the elevation to be determined and set before the erection of the frames begin.
In the present invention this is accomplished by means of establishing a set bench mark for each window frame and placing at that mark a fixed seat, such as the flange of an angle attached to the building structure, and on which a second member such as the flange of a moveable clip angle may rest. The clip angle, while moveable within a guideway for placement purposes, is stopped and positioned by a simple retainer extending across the guideway. Inasmuch as the elevation of the seat is fixed and predetermined, it is a relatively easy task to preset the position of the stop during manufacture so that the window frame may be accurately placed merely by having the clip attached to the seat.

FIG. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of a jamb member of the window frame showing the relationship between the moveableclip and the fixed seat;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view showing the relationship of the jamb, clip and seat with respect to the building structure; and
FIG. 4 is a sectional view along lines 4-4 of FIG. 3.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring to the drawings and to FIG. 1 in particular, a window frame 10 is shown placed in a window receiving opening 11 of a wall 12 of building. The wall 12 is shown in the illustrated embodiment as being made of concrete but it is to be understood that it may be made of and other well-known building material such as would be obvious to one skilled in the art. The window frame opening 11 need not necessarily be constructed prior to the setting in place of the window frame 10, but it may be created after the frame is in place with respect to the structural framework of the building.
The window frame 16 is comprised of a pair of jamb members 14, a sill 16 and a header 18. Also included is a panel of viewing glass 20.
As shown in FIG. 3, the window frame opening may include a granite or other facing material 22.
The building also contains a structural frame 24 fragmentarily shown in FIG. 3 as including an angle structural member having a leg 26.
Before discussing the means of connecting the window frame 10 to the structural frame 24, it is well to note that the lateral position of the window frame 110 with respect to the granite face 22 of the wall 12 may be easily and securely obtained. Extending from the frame 10 is a flange member 28 which engages a deformable sealing member 30 by means of an internal secondary flange 32 extending from the frame flange 28.
After the frame is laterally and vertically in place and to additionally protect the sealing member 30, a caulking compound 34 is placed in between the granite face 22 and the flange 28 and adjacent the sealing member 30.
The vertical positioning of the window frame is not normally as easily nor as readily obtained as the lateral position. It is often necessary that each window frame be painstakingly and separately set by determining in the field the exact elevation at which the frame is to be placed at the time each frame is installed. In accordance with the present invention this Is overcome by means of a relatively simple yet exact technique and construction. A guideway 36 is provided on the jamb 14, the guideway consisting of a web 38, side flanges 40 and inwardly directed flanges 42. Into this guideway 38 a clip 44 is inserted as shown in FIG. 2 in particular. The clip 44 has a lateral leg 46 and a vertical leg 48 and is bent from a metal plate along bend iine 50 into the shape of an angle. On one end of the bend line 50 a short cutout 52 is provided and a wide or diverging cutout 54 is provided at the other end. One corner 56 of the vertical leg 48 is also cut or beveled away.
In order to place the clip 44 in the guideway 36, the clip is rotated so that the beveled corner 56 and the wide cutout 54 permit the vertical flange 48 to be inserted therein and when further rotated, flange 48 will be positioned behind the inwardly directed flanges 42 of the guideway.
A support member 58 in the form of a structural angle member is preset and welded in place to the leg 26 of the structural frame 24. The angle 58 includes a vertical leg 60 which is placed against the leg 26 of the frame 24 and welded thereto, which causes the lateral or horizontal leg 62 of member 58 to be set at a predetermined elevation. It is this horizontal or lateral leg 62 which acts as a seat support for the clip 44.
Before any of the window frames are even shipped to the building site, all the support members 58 may be set at their desired elevations so that the proper positioning of the window frames at their proper vertical elevations may be easily and accurately accomplished when received.
The proper positioning of the clip 44 is preset by a simple factory operation. A pair of holes 64 are punched in the side flanges 40 of the guideway 36 and at the building site a retainer 66 is inserted therethrough to position the clip. The retainer or stop 66 has a limit head 68 at one end thereof and at the other end a tab 70 which may be bent as shown in FIG. 2 to lock 3 the retainer 66 in place. With the retainer 66 in place, the upward movement of the clip 44 is restricted and exactly positioned. When the flange 46 of the clip 34 rests on the lateral support leg 62 of member 58 the exact vertical elevation of the window frame will be obtained.
While only one guideway and clip assembly need be used, if desired and for expediency and ease of setting the frame in place, a second guideway on the second jamb may advantageously be utilized along with a second set of clips and supports.
In addition to the clip 44 which is positioned by the retainer 66, other clips may also be inserted into the guideway 36 and connected to additional supports 58 in order to give vertical stability to the window frame it) in relation to the building structure. Added retainers may be used with the added clips, but they are not deemed essential.
if desired, a slip shim 72 of fibrous material may be placed on the vertical leg 48 of the clip 44 to permit easy movement of the clip in the guideway and to give it still added stability.
lt will be understood to those skilled in the art that the particular embodiment of the present invention which is shown and described herein is intended to be merely illustrative of the invention and that various changes may be made in this embodiment in order to adapt it to the varying conditions of use which will be encountered in its application to various structures.
What is claimed:
1. in combination:
a. a window frame having header, sill and a pair of vertical jamb members;
b. a building structure having an opening therein for receivning same frame;
0. means for positioning said frame in said opening relative to said structure and at a pre-set elevation;
d. said means including 1. a guideway longitudinally positioned along at least one of said jamb members, said guideway being formed as a channel with a pair of inwardly directed flanges reducing the width of the channel opening,
2. a clip movable in said guideway to a predetermined position, said clip being formed from an angle member with a first leg movable in said guideway along the path formed by the inwardly directed flanges and the second leg positioned in a plane substantially transverse to said path and connected to said building structure, said first leg having cut-away portions on a pair of its diagonal opposed corners and said second leg having cutout portions at each side thereof adjacent to said first leg whereby said clip may be rotatably in serted into the guide and retained therein by the inwardly directed langes, and
3. a stop in said guideway in abutting contact with said first leg thereby establidhing the predetermined position of the clip; and
e. flange means extending from said structure fixedly connecting said second leg of said clip to said structure at said pre-set elevation, whereby said frame is accurately located with respect to said structure.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein the flange means for fixedly connecting the clip to the structure includes a flange on which the second leg of the clip is seated and affixed thereto.
3. The combination of claim 2 wherein the guideway stop includes a member extending laterally across said guideway at a fixed elevation and said clip is in abutting contact therewith.
4. The combination of claim 3 and further including at least a second clip moveable iii said guideway and connected to said building structure to vertically position said frame.
5. The combination of claim 4 wherein a second guideway, clip member, positioning means and con necting means is provided on the other jamb member. l= =l =t
Claims (7)
1. In combination: a. a window frame having header, sill and a pair of vertical jamb members; b. a building structure having an opening therein for receivning same frame; c. means for positioning said frame in said opening relative to said structure and at a pre-set elevation; d. said means including 1. a guideway longitudinally positioned along at least one of said jamb members, said guideway being formed as a channel with a pair of inwardly directed flanges reducing the width of the channel opening, 2. a clip movable in said guideway to a predetermined position, said clip being formed from an angle member with a first leg movable in said guideway along the path formed by the inwardly directed flanges and the second leg positioned in a plane substantially transverse to said path and connected to said building structure, said first leg having cut-away portions on a pair of its diagonal opposed corners and said second leg having cut-out portions at each side thereof adjacent to said first leg whereby said clip may be rotatably inserted into the guide and retained therein by the inwardly directed langes, and 3. a stop in said guideway in abutting contact with said first leg thereby establidhing the predetermined position of the clip; and e. flange means extending from said structure fixedly connecting said second leg of said clip to said structure at said pre-set elevation, whereby said frame is accurately located with respect to said structure.
2. a clip movable in said guideway to a predetermined position, said clip being formed from an angle member with a first leg movable in said guideway along the path formed by the inwardly directed flanges and the second leg positioned in a plane substantially transverse to said path and connected to said building structure, said first leg having cut-away portions on a pair of its diagonal opposed corners and said second leg having cut-out portions at each side thereof adjacent to said first leg whereby said clip may be rotatably inserted into the guide and retained therein by the inwardly directed langes, and
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein the flange means for fixedly connecting the clip to the structure includes a flange on which the second leg of the clip is seated and affixed thereto.
3. The combination of claim 2 wherein the guideway stop includes a member extending laterally across said guideway at a fixed elevation and said clip is in abutting contact therewith.
3. a stop in said guideway in abutting contact with said first leg thereby establidhing the predetermined position of the clip; and e. flange means extending from said structure fixedly connecting said second leg of said clip to said structure at said pre-set elevation, whereby said frame is accurately located with respect to said structure.
4. The combination of claim 3 and further including at least a second clip moveable in said guideway and connected to said building structure to vertically position said frame.
5. The combination of claim 4 wherein a second guideway, clip member, positioning means and connecting means is provided on the other jamb member.
