Be it known that I, FREDERICK BLACK- BURN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Palmyra, Burlington county, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Braid- Guides for Straw-Braid-Sewing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The obj ect of my invention is to so construct the braid-guides of a straw-braid-sewing ma- Io chine as to facilitate the proper feeding of the braid, to permit any desired lap of the braid, and to release the braid fromthe control of the guides when necessary.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a I 5 side View of part of a straw-braid-sewing machine with my improved braid-guides. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan on the line 1 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view ofthe machine. Fig. 4 isatransverse section on the line 3 4, Fig. l, and Fig. 5 zo is a perspective view of the braid-guides and part of the machine.
The machine shown in the drawings is one of the Willcox 8U Gibbs77 type, although it should be understood that my invention is not limited to such a machine, the latter being selected simply because it is the one most used for this class of work.

The feeding devices of the machine have not been shown, as they form no part of my invention, and may be of any of the usual construcv3,5 tions, althoughI prefer devices such as shown in my application for patent, filed July 11,1884, Serial No. 137,414.

The lat- 40 eral adjustment of the guide P is effected by a double-threaded screw, m, similar to that described in my Letters Patent N o. 27 9, 855,dated June 19, 1883, one portion of the screw having a right-hand thread adapted to a nut, n, on the guide, Figs. 1 and 2, and the other portion a left-hand thread adapted to a nut, n', so that on turning the screw there is a movement of the guide equal to the combined pitch of the threads. The nut n', instead of being fixed,
however, is carried by a screw-stem, m', adapted to a slot, m2, in a bracket, Q, and having a thumb-nut, m3,.so that on loosening' this nut the guide P may be rapidly retracted to the eX- tent of the length of the slot withoutmanipulating the screw m, and on again restoringthe nut to the'front end of the slot the guide will be returned to its former position, there being no interference with the yadj ustment of the v guide due to the screw m. This feature is of importance in forming short rows on hats, 6o where it is desirable at times to move the lower v braid-guide rapidly out of the way while crosssewing the laps land to restore it-to its former position as soon as this operation is completed.
S is the upper braidguide carrying the separator-plate S', Fig. 5, this guide being secured to a spindle, p, which can turn and slide in a bearing in a' bracket, T, on theframe, and is threaded for adaptation to a nut, p', longitudinally confined to said bearing byaplate, p, so that on turning the nut the stem will be advanced or retracted and the upper guide adj usted. The guide can be readily thrown back out of the way when it is desired to sew together layers without any lap, the spindle p in this case turning in its bearings, and a spring, s, acting upon a plate bearing on a flattened portion of the spindle, as shown in Fig. 4, so as to hold the guide in its elevated position. The lower braid-guide being retracted, the rim of 8o the hat `can, whenthe upper braid-guide is thrown upward, project laterally inward beneath said guide and beyond the needle to anyy desired extent, so as to permit the sewing of Y top layers of braid on the brim of the hat at 85 any desired point in the width of the same.
A presser, V, for the upper braid is carried by an arm, V', hung to the stem p and adj ustable thereon, so as to adapt the presser to different thicknesses of braid, a set-screw, o, securing the arm in position after adjustment.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination ofthe lower braid-guide and its adjusting-screw, a nut receiving said screw and having a projecting stem, a supporting-bracket having an elongated slot through which said stem projects, and a retaining-nut on said stem, al1 substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the needle and work` plate of a sewing-machine with a plate bearing on the lower layer of braid and located at the inner side of the needle,so as to guide the upper layer of braid thereto, andV means for pivoting said plate at its outer end, so that it can be thrown back out ofthe way, al1 substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the needle and workplate of a sewing-machine, a laterally-movable edge-guide for the lower layer of braid, an upper edge-guide bearing on the said lower layer and located at the inner side of the needle, and means for pivoting said plate at its outer end,so that it can be thrown backout of the way, all substantially as specified.
4. The combination of the work-plate and needle ofthe machine, an upper edgeguide having a laterally-projecting stem, and meansto enable said stem both to turn and to slide laterally in a bracket on the frame, whereby the guide can be adjusted laterally for different laps of braid, or can be thrown back, so as to permit thebrim of a hat to pass beneath it, all substantially as specified.
5. The combination of the bracket T and a spring contained therein with a guide for the inner edge of a strip of braid, said guide being provided with a pivot-stem fitted toa bearing in the bracket and having a flattened portion forming a bearing for the end of the spring, all substantially as specified.
6. The combination of the bracket T,a braid` guide having a threaded stem tted to an opening in the bracket and free to turn and to slide therein, and a nut adapted to said threaded stem and free to turn with the same, but confined longitudinally to the bracket, all substantially as Specified.
7. The combination of the braid-guide having a pivot-stem with the braid-presser having an arm secured to but adjustable circumferentially on said stem, all substantially as specified.
