Abstract
A cut off plate is removably disposed horizontally adjacent the outlet of the compaction shoe of a curbing machine useful in extruding asphalt or concrete curb. The cut off plate divides the extruded curb permitting the upper portion to be removed as desirable in forming driveway approaches and the like.

The cut off plate divides the extruded curb permitting the upper portion to be removed as desirable in forming driveway approaches and the like.
3 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures 1 CUT OFF PLATE FOR CURBING MACHINES BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention This invention relates to curbing machines of the type normally employed to extrude asphaltic concrete or Portland cement concrete curbs along driveways, parking lots, roadways, streets and the like.
2. Description of thePrior Art No prior art is known wherein the extruded curb product of a curb forming machine is separated transversely to leave a threshold section of low profile and facilitating the removal of the extruded curb thereabove. This invention enables a curbing machine to move continuously along the side of a roadway extruding normally shaped curbing and by operating the cut off plate in a driveway approach area, reduce the height of the extruded curbing to the desirable threshold level.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A cut off plate attachment for the extrusion shoe of a curb building machine consists of a horizontal plate having a knife-like forward edge, the plate being positioned on longitudinally extending downturned flanges along its side edges which flanges extend forwardly alongside the curb forming shoe for pivotal attachment thereto.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a perspective view of an extrusion shoe of a curb forming machine with the cut off plate in operative position relative thereto.
FIG. 2 is a side elevation with parts broken away and parts in cross section. and
FIG. 3 is a vertical section on line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT In its simplest form the cut off plate for curbing machines as illustrated herein comprises a horizontal plate having a knife edge 11 on its forward edge and downturned longitudinally extending flanges 12 and on its side edges. Extension of the longitudinally extending flanges 12 and 13 continue beyond the knife edge 11 and are apertured as at 14 so that they can be attached to pivot bolts 15 secured to the outer opposite sides of an extrusion shoe 16. The extrusion shoe 16 forms a part of a known curb building machine and as will occur to those skilled in the art, is a desirably shaped inverted channel member having an attachment flange 17 at one end by which it is secured to the compaction chamber 18 of a curb building machine.
In FIG. 1 of the drawings, broken lines indicate the compaction chamber 18 and a longitudinal extending arm 19 of the curb building machine will be seen in position thereabove with a tensioning member 20 on its outermost end adapted to be engaged on the upper surface of the extrusion shoe 16 as is customary in the art.
Still referring to FIG. 1 of the drawings it will be seen that the end of the cut off plate 10 opposite to the knife edge 11 is open so that the curbing material, either asphaltic concrete or Portland concrete cement, being compacted and shaped in the extrusion shoe l6 and cut off by the horizontal plate 10 will emerge in the form of a low threshold profile as indicated by the letter T and the broken lines in FIG. 1 of the drawings. The material cut off by the horizontal plate ll) can easily be picked up by a shovel and returned to the hopper of the curbing machine.
By referring now to FIG. 2 of the drawings. the vertical broken lines above the pivot bolt 15 indicate the position of the cut off plate of the invention when it is not being used as in the extruding of a complete curb shape. Broken lines in the left hand portion of FIG. 2 of the drawings indicates the separate portions of the extruded curb formed when the cut off plate is in operative position with the low profile threshold section remaining as extruded and the balance being removed as hereinbefore described. Hooks 21 are positioned on the opposite outer sides of the downturned longtudinally extending flanges 12 and 13 so that restraining means, not shown, may be attached thereto and used to elevate the cut off plate to the position shown in broken lines in FIG. 2 of the drawings with the restraining means being attached to the curbing machine as will occur to those skilled in the art.
In FIG. 3 of the drawings the section on line 3-3 of FIG. 2 may be seen as from inside the extrusion shoe and it will occur to those skilled in the art that the actual configuration of the extrusion shoe T6 is a matter of choice as many shapes are employed and that the angular configuration of the downturned longitudinally extending flanges l2 and 13 of the invention may be easily formed to correspond with the same for satisfactory pivotal engagement thereagainst as illustrated.
Those skilled in the art will observe that by use of the device of the invention, the curbing machine can continually operate with the cut off device used intermittently to form low profile threshold areas for driveways and the like.
Although but one embodiment of the present invention has been illustrated and described it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A cut off plate for an extrusion shoe of a curbing machine and consisting of a horizontally positioned flat member having a knife-like forward edge, arms on said flat member extending forwardly of said knife-like forward edge and pivotally engaging said extrusion shoe for movably positioning the flat member adjacent the discharge orifice of said extrusion shoe so as to separate material emerging from said extrusion shoe into upper and lower portions.
2. The cut off plate of claim 1 wherein said member is a horizontal plate having said knife-like forward edge and said arms consist of flanges on the side edges of said cut off plate with extensions of said flanges arranged to be positioned along the outer sides of said extrusion shoe, fasteners on said extrusion shoe pivotally engaging said extensions of said flanges for movably positioning said cut off plate relative to said extrusion shoe.
3. The cut off plate of claim 2 and wherein said longitudinally extending flanges are downturned and disposed at angles with respect to said horizontal plate.

Claims (3)
1. A cut off plate for an extrusion shoe of a curbing machine and consisting of a horizontally positioned flat member having a knife-like forward edge, arms on said flat member extending forwardly of said knife-like forward edge and pivotally engaging said extrusion shoe for movably positioning the flat member adjacent the discharge orifice of said extrusion shoe so as to separate material emerging from said extrusion shoe into upper and lower portions.

The cut off plate of claim 1 wherein said member is a horizontal plate having said knife-like forward edge and said arms consist of flanges on the side edges of said cut off plate with extensions of said flanges arranged to be positioned along the outer sides of said extrusion shoe, fasteners on said extrusion shoe pivotally engaging said extensions of said flanges for movably positioning said cut off plate relative to said extrusion shoe.
3. The cut off plate of claim 2 and wherein said longitudinally extending flanges are downturned and disposed at angles with respect to said horizontal plate.
