SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,185, dated March 6, 1888.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN M. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Watson, in the county of Effingham and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baling- Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in double baling-presses; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the parts-thereof, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
The object ofmyinventionis to provideadouble-acting baling-press in which two plungers are connected with each other and alternately projected in opposite directions by a centrallysituated crank-shaft. I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and

A closed housing, B, is secured in "the central portion of the frame, and within this housing the plunger-connecting frame 0 is mounted and has movement therein. As shown in Fig. 3, a crank-shaft, S, is mounted transversely in the housing B, the crank of which engages with the vertical opening 0 in the plunger-connecting frame 0. The crank-shaft is provided with a gear-wheel on one end and a fly-whee'l on the opposing end, while adjacent to the fly-wheel another gearwheel is mounted similar in diameter and construction to the gear-wheel on the end of the said crank-shaft first referred to. The powershaft S also runs transversely through the housing B, and is provided with suitable gearwheels, which mesh with the gear-wheels on the crank-shaft and with the band-pulley and balance-wheel for transmission of power, as will be readily understood.
The vertical ends b of the housing B are provided with slots 1), to permit the longitudinal strips 0 of the plunger-connecting frame 0 to have movement therethrough and to act as auxiliaries in steadying the motion of the said connecting-frame in its longitudinal move- One of the strips 0 of the connectingframe 0 is provided with a longitudinal slot or opening, 0, so as to permit said strip to have free play over the power-shaft S.
One side of the press is provided with feedopenings A, which merge into the balingboxes, as shown; and to provide a means of closing these openings suitable metallic plates, D, are secured to the edges of the plungers 0 adjacent thereto and slide backward and forward into the housing B, passing the vertical ends I) of the said housing in the operation of the plungers. A slot, (1, is formed in one of said metallic plates, which rides over the power-shaft S, and is arranged parallel with a slot in the longitudinal strip 0 adjacent thereto. These metallic plates also form anti-frictional bearing-surfaces in the movement thereof to prevent wear at the points where they are applied to the plungers, and further prevent the clogging of hay or other material being baled in the space between each of the plungers and the vertical sides I) while the press is being fed. By this means lull stroke of the plungers is at all times obtained and the parts kept in clean condition, as will be readily understood.
A suitable top cover, E, is provided,which is placed over the top of the housing B and further protects the mechanism under the same, the said top cover being readily removed when desired.
The operation of my improved device is as follows: The two ends of the press are simultaneously fed through the feedopenings A and the two plungers G are alternately impelled forward by the action of the crank-shaft S moving in the vertical slot in the plungerconnccting frame 0, as hereinbefore set forth.
It will be observed that while one feed-opening is clear for feeding the other opening will be closed by the plunger in its forward movement, thereby allowing continuous feed in that while ouefceder is obtaining the material to be baled the other feeder at the other end of the machine will be feeding his box. This operation becomes continuous until the bale is formed, which may be released from the baling-boxes in the well-known manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. The eombinatiomin adoublcbaling-pl'ess, of the double bailing-boxes the plungers connected by the frame-work set forth, which is formed with a central vertical slot therethrough, a crank-shaft operating in said vertical slot midway between the plungers, and the power-shaft for actuating the crank-shaft, also passing through a horizontal slot in the connecting-frame of the plungers to one side of the central vertical slot, substantially as described.
2. Thecombinatiominadoublebaling-press, of the double baling-boxes having feed-openings on one side thereof, the double plungers provided with metallic plates and connected by the frame-work, constructed, as set forth, with a metallic-lined central vertical slot, the crank-shaft working in said vertical slot in the plunger-frame midway between the two plungcrs, the housing B, having vertical ends b, with apertures I), through which a part of the plunger-connecting frame passes, and the power-shaft S, passing through a horizontal slot in the plunger-connecting frame to one side of the central vertical slot, substantially as described.
