Description

(NoMndeL) W. L. STRONG.
'PROPELLER WHEEL.
No. 378,221. Patented Feb. 21, 1888.
vwe/wwt,
Warren Srnrns nrnn'r rrrcnt IVALTER L. STRONG, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
PROPELLER-WH EEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,221, dated February 21, 1888.
Application filed December 22, 1887. Serial No. 258,771. (No model.)
To JZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VALTER L. STRONG, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in a Iropeller-IVheel; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in screw-propellers.
It consists of spirall yforn1ed blades or vanes extending radially outward from the hub which is to be attached to the propeller-shaft, and in combination therewith of an exterior band or ring cast with or secured to the edges of the propeller-blades and inclosing the front edges of the propeller-blades, while the rear ends are allowed to project beyond and behind this ring, as will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a view of my propeller.
A is the hub of the propeller, which is socured to the propeller-shaft in any suitable or usual manner; and B are the blades, which may be two or more in m1inher,and extend radially outward from the hub, having any desired pitch as thin as is consistent with the necessary strength, so as to offer but little resistance as it passes edgcwise through the water, and it incloses the forward part of the propellerblades. In the present case I have shown this hoop as covering about two-thirds of the outer edges of the blades from front toward the rear. The rear one-third of the blade extends behind this hoop, as shown.
The operation of this device will be as follows: The hub, forming a part of the propeller and rotating with it, holds the water and prevents it from being thrown outward by the rapid revolution of the propeller, and thus gives it a strong hold on the water, keeping the latter also a solid body and preventingits being churned up, and also serving to give it impulse directly back and in the line of travel of the boat. By leaving the rear portion of the propeller-blades uncovered it allows the water to escape freely and discharge from the propeller without choking.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
The propeller consisting of the hub and spi rally-disposed blades projecting radially therefrom, in combination with the hoop or band secured to and inclosing the forward portion of the blades, while the rear portion of the blades are inclosed and extend rearwardly from the hoop or band, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
XVALTEB L. STRONG. Vitnesses:
