IMPROVED MEANS OF AFFIXING DEFENSIVE ARMOR-PLATES.

Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 37,801, dated March 3, 1863.

Be it known that I, EDWARD BRADY, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Armor-Plating Vessels; and i do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being nail to the accompany ing drawings, making part of this specification, in which-- Fignre 1 represents a portion of the midship cross-section of a plated vessel. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of plates and bolts shown in Fig. i. Fig. 3 is a section showing modes by which plates are fastened at bolt 0 din Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a section showing mode by which plates are fastened at bolt 11. b in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 represents aside elevation of an iron plate. showin g t w o kinds of bolts, sections adapted to two adjoining plates, and an enlarged view of bolts. Fig.6 represents a plan and section of two adjoining iron plates, showing the application of one kind of bolt, plan of the bolt on an enlarged scale, and perspective view of the plate. Fig. 7 represents a side elevation of a deck-plate, showing the application of two kinds of bolts, sections of two adjoining plates, and views of bolts on a larger scale. Fig. 8 represents an iron plate adapted to one kind of bolt-such as G D in Fig. 7--and a perspective view of three adjoining plates. Fig. 9 represents a plan of a beveled plate and section of two adjoining beveled plates, with same kind of bolt applied as A B in Fig. 6. II in the accompanying drawings represent armor-plates, of iron, steel, or any other suitble metal. These plates may be secured edgewise to the sides, deck, smoke-stack, or any other part of the vessel by means of the bolts represented at a b A B, or by those atc d O D. If secured by the former, which is provided with an aperture, E, the said plate I must .beformed or provided with an aperture or cavity, F, corresponding therewith- The bolt being insertedin the aperture F is tightly sejcttred therein by means of a pin, E, which is inserted in an orifice, G, in the side of the plate I and through the aperture E in the belt a b A B. The bolt may be fastened on the inside of the vessel. by means of a screwnut.. bf..or. in anv other. suitable manner. if secured to the side of the vessel W, or other part thereof, by means of the form of bolt shown at 001 G D, the plate I is formed or provided with a cavity, F, to correspond with and permit the insertion of the head K, formed on the outer end of the said bolt. This bolt maybe fastened on the inside of the vessel injthe same manner as the bolt a b A B.

Each of the bolts 0 d- O D may be employed in securing asingle plate or in connecting and securing two adjacent plates, as shown in Fig. 3.

The bolt a 0 A B may be employed to secure one, two, or more plates, as may be desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. Protecting the sides, decks, or other parts of vessels or fortifications with metallic plates, secured edgewise thereto, by means substantially as herein shown and described.

2. Securing. the said plates by means of bolts or other fastenings applied to or within apertures or cavities formed in the inner edges of the said plates and enlarged within the body thereof, or intersected by transverse apertures, in any way substantially as explained.
