W. H. HAW-S.
NUT'LOOK.
No. 377,714. Patented Feb. '7, 1888.
. 6 7/////////// xx H a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC DWILLIAM H. HAWS, OF WASHINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTHS TO JAMES M. HAWS AND JAMES W. ELYNN, BOTH E SAME PLAoE, AND ANDREW J. HAWS, OF JoHNsroWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 377.714, dated February 7, 1888.
Application filed February 12, 1887. Serial No. 227,453. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HAWS, of (Little) Washington, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in N ut-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My improvement relates to that class of de- I 5 vices known as nut-locks, and has for its object a novel, simple, and effective means whereby the nuts, when. screwed upon the b0lts,are securely and firmly held from becoming loose or turning, and, further, in forming the lock out of one piece of metal and so bending the same that the portion which fits under the inner not will always be held tightly against it; and itv also consists in certain other details of construction, as will be hereinafter 2 more fully decsribed, and specifically pointed out in the claim. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my nut- 0 lock, showing thesame when applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lock-plate, and Fig. 3 is a modification of the lock-plate.
In the drawings, A represents an ordinary rail to which are secured the fish-plates B B. 5 The railand fish-plates are provided with holes or perforations, through which ordinary screw bolts,O,are adapted to pass. A nut, D, is then screwed upon the bolt until the fish-plates are brought firmly and tightly against the web of 40 the rail.
v F represents my improved nut-lock, which is preferably formed of malleable metal, and in contour rectangular in. shape, as shown in Fig. 2. At a suitable distance from its top I 5 cut or stamp out an aperture, f,wh ich may be of any shape desired, for the purpose of allowing the bolt to pass through. Below the aperture); I bend the plate at an incline, as shown at f, and almost at right angles with the main D is the outside nut, between which nut and I the nut D is the locking-plate F.
The operation is as follows: The bolt being passed through the railand fish-plates, the nut D is screwed up tightly. The locking-plateis then put in place by putting it on the bolt. Then the outside nut is screwed up ti htly and firmly against thelocking-plate, Willi is then bent over and down upon the top of the nut. It will be readily seen that by these means a simple, cheap, and effective nut-lock is produced which can be manufactured at but little cost, and can, when required, be readily removed to allow repairs when necessary.
In Fig. 3 I also show a modification in which the lower portion of the locking-plate is bent, as shown, to form the bearing portions gand g and the part 9, which is adapted to fit snugly against the lower side of the inner nut,
the upper portion of the plate being bentover the outer nut, as before described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
As a new article of manufacture, a lockingblank for nuts, consisting of a piece of metal having a perforation to admit a bolt, one end bent and the other end provided with a springflange, whereby it may be wedged between a washer and one of the parts bolted together, the other end being long enough to be bent over the nut, so as to lock the same, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM IL HAWS. Witnesses:
