SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,298, dated January 10, 1888.

of Lakewood, Ocean county, New Jersey, have invented an Improved StockingFastener, of which the following isa complete specification.

Figure l is a perspective view of my improved fastener. Fig. 2 is a face View, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, thereof. Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of modifications in the construction of the button part thereof, and Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section showing the fastener in position on the garment.

This inventionrelates to a new fastenerfor holding up stockings and other garments, and has for its object to avoid cutting or injury to the fabric, economy in the manufacture ofthe fastener, and ease in its adjustment.

The invention consists in combining in such.

a fastener a button7 or cloth receiver having its shanklocated nearer its upper than its lower end with a loop or clothretaineiwhich is shorter than'the covered face of said button. Theinvent-ion also consists in furtherdetails ofimprovement that are hereinafter more fully described.

When in this specification I speak of the upper7 and lower part ofthe buttonlhave reference to its position on a stocking; but as the device is useful in other places this reference is simply descriptive of one use, and not intended as a limitation.

In the drawings, the letter A represents the button part or cloth-receiver, and B the loop7 part or cloth retainer, of the fastener. The button part A has ahead or facepiece, a, on a shank, b, the said shank having a loop, c, or the like, by which it is secured to a strap, D. The shank b is so placed with reference to the face-piece a that it is nearer the upper than the lower end of'said face-piece. The

loop part B is 'aplain loop of wire or the like adapted to be slipped over the face-piece a of the button, as by dotted lines in Fig. 3, and to be then drawn under the face-piece by the draftof the garment, as by full lines inbFig. 6. The loop B is by a link, d, or directly, if desired, secured to a strap, E. The button part A may be constructed of wi re, as in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, of sheet metal, as in Fig. 5, or of other suitable material. Its face-piece a may be of triangular, quadrangular, circular, oval, or othe form. f

In use the part a of the button is placed untliereof, and thereupon the loop B is put over the covered button by first inclining it and then swinging it parallel thereto. The length of thc loop B is less, than that of the covered button, so it cannot spontaneously slip off, the draft ofthe garment drawing the loop behind the facepiece, as in Fig. 6, thereby locking the fastener on the garment; but it can easily be tilted off, when desired, by first raising it, as in Fig. 3, in which operation the link d inateriall y assists. i

The straps D should be shorter than the straps lil, so that the/button may hold the gai'- ment tight. The straps E and D extend, of course, in the same direction.

Having now described my invention, what I claim is-- l. The button A, having shank Zz and face piece a,said face-'piece projecting from both sides of the shank, but farther in one direction thanin the other, and means for attaching it to ra strap, in combination withr the loop B,substantially as herei n shown and described.

2. The button A, having shank b and facepiece a, said face-piece projecting farther from one side of the shank than from the other, and means, c, for attaching it to a strap, in .combination with the loop B and link d thereon, as specified. 'i

3. The strap D, combined with the button A, having'face-piece a, extending farther from its shank b in the direction away from said strap than toward said strap, in combination with the loop B and strap E, the strap D being shorter than the strap E. as specified.
