HAIR-CUTTING IMPLEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,546, dated December 27, 188'].
Application filed August 16, 1887. Serial No. 247,117. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known thatI, ARNOLD FREY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Cutting Implements, of
e which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to hair-cutting instruments, and more particularly to improvements in hair-clippers; and it has for its object to provide a clipper combined with a comb that will enable the barber to cut the hair any desired length; and with that object in view my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an' elevation of my hair-cutting instrument complete, and Fig. 2 a cross-section on line a; a; in Fig. 1.
Corresponding letters in the several figures of the drawings designate like parts.
A denotes the comb-plate, being a metal plate that has teeth like a comb and an elbowextension, 1), against the end of which is secured by rivets or screws the handle B. Upon the solid portion of the comb-plate is placed the cutter-plate 0, having triangular cutterteeth a, and over plate 0 is placed a plate, D, of thin steel, having a rear rectangular flange, d, resting upon the rear edge of combplate A, and a forward rectangular flange, e, resting upon the cutter-plate Gin a manner that only the flanges form a bearing-surface and that the intermediate plate lies hollow. Screwstuds f, made rigid with comb-plate A, pass through longitudinal slots in the cutter-plate O, and then with their screw-threaded points pass through holes in guide'plate D, and are provided with screw-nuts that with tightening will compress the forward flange, e, of guideplate D upon the cutter-plate G, for holding the cutter-teeth 0 close upon the roots of the comb-teeth a to form shearing-edges therewith.
The guide-plate D, being sufficiently thin to be elastic, will facilitate this shearing operation by holding the parts in close contact without excessively clamping'the parts and without retarding the reciprocating movements of the cutter-plate 0. The lever-handleGis pivoted at one side of its T-shaped end, between the extension I) of comb-plate A and the end of handle B, on one of the rivets or screws that secure said handle B to the comb-plateA,while the other side of said T-head of handle G forms a pivot-head, g, engaging a correspondinglyshaped notch, h, in the end of the cuttei plate G in a manner that a swinging movement of handle G will transmit a reciprocating movement to said cutter-plate. Against the opposing ends of handles B and G are secured the ends of curved leaf-springs I, the opposite ends of which are notched to interlock each other in a manner that the action of both springs I combined will force the handles 13 and G apart again after each compression.
A small handle, J, forms part of either the comb plate A or the guide-plate D, and serves to hold and guide the instrument with the left hand while operating the clippers with the right hand.
What I claim is The combination, with the comb-plate A, having the elbow-extension b at one end, of the cutterplate G, mounted over the comb-plate and having the notch hin an extension at one end, the plate D, for holding and guiding the cutter-plate, and the handles B and G, the former beiugsecured to extension I), and the latter having a Tshaped inner end, one limb of which is provided with a pivot-head, g, working in notch h of cutter-plate, and the other limb being pivoted to the extension I),
as set forth;
