SHACKLE FOR VEHICLE-SPRINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,529, dated December 27, 1887. Application filed J anuary 13, 1887. Serial No. 224,213. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER O. BRAD- LEY, of the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New'York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shackles for Vehicle-Springs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the shackles whereby the springs of vehicles are attached to the axles or other supports, and has the object to produce a shackle which permits of the requisite movement or play of the spring on its support in the plane of the spring, but prevents end motion of the spring, thereby avoidingrattling and undue wear.
My invention consists of the improvements which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of an axle and spring provided with my improved shackles. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation, on an enlarged scale, of one of the shackles and connecting parts. Fig. 4 is a vertical section in line 00 x, 3. Fig. 5 is a top plan' view, partly in section, the plane of section being in line y y, Fig. 3. A represents the body of the axle, and a a the arms thereof, arranged somewhat higher than the body of the axle and connected therewith by bent necks b b.
0 represents a semi-elliptical spring arranged above the body'A of the axle in the sanie vertical plane therewith, and having its ends arranged at a short distance inwardly from'the upper portions of the bent necks b b.
D D represent the shackles which connect the ends of the spring with the axle. Each shackle consists of a top plate, (1, and two depending ears, d d projecting downwardly from the top plate and extending beyond the inner and outer edges thereof. The two cars 11 d are arranged at the proper distance apart to straddle the axle and the spring, and the space between the two ears is preferably milled out to insure a snug fit of the shackle on the axle and spring. Each ear is provided with two openings for the reception, respectively, of the horizontal bolts 0 and e, by which the shackle is attached to the axle and spring. The bent necks b of the axle are each provided at their upper and inner sides with an ear, f, V
which fits snugly between the ears (1 d of the shackle, and which is provided with an opening through which the bolt 6 passes, by which the shackle is attached to the axle. Each end of the spring is provided with an eye, g, which fits snugly between the ears d d, and through which the bolt 6' passes, by which the shackle is attached to the spring. One of the ears d d of the shackle is provided on its outer side and between'the bolt-holes with a vertical rib, h, against which bear the heads '6 of the bolts 6 e, whereby the bolts are prevented from turning when a wrench is applied to the nuts j of these bolts.
Each shackle is composed of a single rigid piece, and fits snugly against the axle and the spring, thereby preventing any motion of the springin the line of draft and avoiding noise and undue wear, while permitting the spring to move freely up and down.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination, with the perforated axle and spring, of a shackle composed of a plate, 01, and perforated ears (1 d projecting from one side of said plate at opposite ends thereof and separated by an unobstructed space, each ear d and (1 being provided. with two perforations, and parallel shackle-bolts c e, passingthrough the perforations of the ears, the axle, and the spring, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a spring-shackle composed of a plate, (1, and perforated ears d d, projecting from one side of said plate at opposite ends thereof and provided with an external rib, h, on one side of said ears, and the bolts 6 e, passing through said vertical ears and bearing with their heads against said rib, substantially as set forth.
