Description
M. B. STAFFORD, 0F New YORK, N; Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN w|NDowsAsH FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,528, dated January 27, 1863.
To all 'whom it may concern v Be it known that I, STAFFORD, ofthe city, county, and State of` New `i'orlr, have in# vented a new and Iinp'rovedWidow-Sash Fastening; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the-accom-A panying drawings, makin g a part of this specincation, in which y L Figure 1 is a plan or top view of my inven-v tion in a' locked state; Fig.. 2, a plan or top View of the same in an unlocked state; Fig. 3,
a side view'oi1 the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts iu the several figures.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class 'of widow-sash fastenings which are -designed for keeping the upper and lower sashes in a locked state whenclosed; and it consistsin a novel attachment constructed and arranged in such a manner with a' fastening that when the latter is moved or adjusted so as to fasten the sashes the attachment will become engaged or so adjust itself as to form a lock, and eectually prevent the fastening being operated upon from the outer side of the window.
To enable those skilled in the 'art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will prceed to describe it.
A represents a metal plate or bearing, which is of right-angular f orin in its transverse section, and is attached by screws to the center of the lower rail, a", of the upper sashof the window.
'B is'a'horin'ontal bar, which is secured by a vertical pin or pivot, a, to the plate A. This pin.or pivot a passes through a horizontal plate, b, which is atthe central part ,of i the plate A, and is parallel with the lower part of the' latter, as showniu Fig.'3. The bar B is allowed to turn jfreely on -the pin or pivot a,
and it has a notch orrecess, c, made in its underl side, which is also shown in Fig. 3.
To the outer end of the bar B there is at' tathed, by a pivot or joint, d, a short bar, C, which is allowed to work or move freely up and down on said pivot or joint.
D isa metal plate, which is'attached to the center of theupper crossrail, e, of the lower sash of the window. This plate D has a ledge, f, at its outer end. The front or outer edge of this ledge iscurved so as to form a segment or part of a circle of which the pin or pivot a is the center. The. upper surface of the ledge f .isalso inclined or .curved from its center downward in each direction, so as to form curved inclined surfaces g g, and atthe center of said ledge thereis a vertical slot, h, of sufficient width to receive the lower part of the bart). (SeeFigZ.) i. 0n the backv part of the plate D there is a ledge, ji, the front edge ofwhich is curved, forming a segment or part cfa circle the center of which is the pin or pivot a. lThe front side 'of the notch or recess c is also curved to correspond with the curvature of the front edge of the ledge i. I
`When the two sashes are not secured or locked in a closed state bythe inventiomthe bar B is turned roundso as to have a longitudinal position on the plate A ,fas shown in Fig. 2, and in orderto vsecurethc sashesin a closed state the bar; B is moved around at rightv angles tothe plate A, and during this movement ot' har B 'the'su'ortbar'Gpasses up one ot' the inclined surfaces g of the plate D, and when said bar reaches the slot la. the
former byits own gravity dropsinto said slet,
and forms a lock, which ei'ectnally prevents the bar B being turned oli' from the ledge j' from lthe outer side of the-window by the in sertion of a knife-blade or a thin strip of metal between the adjoining cross-'rails d e of the two sashes. This is the mode practiced by burglars in opening the old fastenings of thiskind. v
When the bar B is turned over the plate'D, the two cross-rails a?? e are drawn together in close contact, so as to form a weather-proof joint, in consequence of the ledge t' fitting in thenotch o`r recess c in the under side of bar B. In order to unlock the bar B, the short bar C is first raised out of theslot It, andthe har B turnedveither to the right or left over the Having thus described .my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The pivoted bar B, provided with the notch or recess c, and having the bar C attached by a joint, d, in combination with the plate D, provided` with the ledge having inclined orv f
