UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. LEAROGK, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BACKSIGHTS FOR FIRE-ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,512, dated J anuary 7, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. LEAROCK, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusets, have invented a new and useful Bifle or Gun Sight; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a front elevation, Fig. 2 a rear elevation, Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 a transverse section.
My invention has reference to a rifle or gun sight having its eye-piece and the main supporting-frame thereof provided with devices whereby such eye-piece may be adjusted both vertically and laterally within the said frame, the lateral adjustment of the eye-piece being to correct the lateral deviation of a projectile or bullet from its true trajectory or line of direction.
My improved rifle or gun sight is so constructed that each lateral, as well as each vertical movement of its eye-piece, is effected by screw of the eye-piece is arranged within the supporting-frame and its holding-screw, and below the eye-piece carrier or slider, substantially as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A denotes the main frame or standard of my said new and useful rifle or gun sight. This frame is an opening one, and is to be provided with a screw, a, or some equivalent means for fixing it to the barrel or to the stock of a gun or rifle. A secondary frame or slide, B, is placed within the frame A and so applied to the two parallel side bars, b b, as to be capable of being freely moved be tween them from one end to or near the other I end of the said frame. An adjusting-screw, 0,
suitably applied to the slider B and to the frame A,serves to effect the movements of the slider and to enable it to be adjusted in height to'advantage. \Vithin the slider B, which is also an open frame, the eye-piece D is situated, and is so adapted to the slider as to' be capable of being moved therein in a lateral direction toward either of the bars I) b. A tangentscrew, E, applied to the eye-piece and the slider, serves to move the eye-piece and adjust it within the slider. This eye-piece is punctured with a sight hole, 0, or may contain a lens, as circumstances may require.
A scale of divisions may be applied to the main frame, the secondary frame or slider being furnished with a Vernier or an index to operate with such scale. Similar devices may also be applied to the slider and eye-piece, they being for the purpose of facilitating and effecting the correct adjustment of the eyepiece either vertically or laterally.
A gun-sight made in my improved manner has been found to operate to excellent advantage in practice.
I do not claim either of the gun-sights as represented in the English Patent No. 113 of the year 1855, my invention having reference to a gun-sight having its eye-piece provided with adjustments by which it may be capable of being moved or adjusted laterally as well as vertically within its main supporting-frame.
WVhat I claim is v The arrangement of asingle elevating-screw, 0, within the frame A, and its support or holding-screw a, and so as to enable the slider or carrier B and its eye-piece D to be either elevated or depressed by the revolution of one screw, as described.
JOHN B. LEABOCK.
