E. MIGNAULT & G. A. PRIOHARD.
VENTILATOR.
PatentedDeo. 20,` 1887.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUSEBE MIGNAULT AND GEORGE A. PRICHARD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
VENTILAToR.
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,987, dated December 20, 1887I (No model.)
To aZZ whom iz may concern:
Be it known that we, EfJsEBE MIGNAULT and GEORGE A. PRIOHARD, of New York city, county and State of New York, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvenients in Ventilators, of which the followlng is a full, clear, and exact description,
, reference being had to the accompanyi ng draw- The object of our invention is to produce a ventilator which is operated by wind or air currents, to Which the ventilator is exposed,
either when at rest, as by passing wind or air currents, or when the ventilator is moving rapidly through the air, or under both circumstances combined, which ventilator shall produce a positive, rapid, and thorough exhaustion of air or gases from the compartment to be ventilated by mechanical means, and which shall operate easily, noiselessly, and with little friction, no matter in Which direct-ion it may be moved nor from Which direction the air-current may proceed. To accomplish all this our improvements involve certain new and useful peculiarities of construction and relative arrangements or combinations of parts, Which Will be herein first fully described, and then pointcd out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing our improved ventilator, the view being taken of the side opposite the inlet pipe or conduit which leads from the car or compartment to the ventilator. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a crosssection and elevation upon a plane through line x x of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an end elevation. Fig. 5 is a crosssection and elevation upon aplane through line y y of Fig. 2.
In all the figures like letters of reference,
Wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts.
A is the main shell of the apparatus, Which is of general cylindrical form, having open ends provided with flaring mouths B B, to catch and direct large volurnes of air. In the axis of the shell is a shaft, O, mouuted so as to revolve easily in the bearings a a, which are made adjustable, so as to compensate for any vear, and which are sustained in suitable arms, b b, connected with the shell. Upon this shaft are mounted and secured two operating-fans, D D, the blades of which are turned or iuclined in the same directions, so that any air-current striking both fans will turn them in the same direction or so that one shall not operate against the other. These fans are mounted near the ends of the shaft, and it is immaterial in which direction they be turned. About the middle partof the shell is a compartment formed by the two division-plates c c'. In this compartment is located au eX- haust-fan keyed to shaft C, and the inlet tube or conduit F connects with the compartiment to deliver Vfoul air and gases to the fan E, a central division-plate, d,'operating to direct the incoming air and gases to the center of the fan, for which purpose the said division is centrally perforated, as shown iu Figs. 2 and 3.
G is the outlet opening or discharge, through which the foul air and gases are forcibly and rapidly driven by the fan, producing a correspondingly forcible eXhaustion from the compartment to be ventilated.
The fan E is driven rapidly by the fans D D. It is desirable that the fans D D should be acted upon by air-currents on both sides. We therefore supply the casing With a number of perforations, e e, outside the central compartment, and guard these by oppositely-inclined fianges H H, about the same size as the flaring months B B. `Within the casing are conical directors I I, arranged to direct 'air-currents against the inner faces of both fans D D. The arrangement is such that if the device be moving in either direction, or if it be exposed to a current blowing in the direction of its length, or nearly so, one of the months B will direct the current against the outer face of the adjacent fan, the adjacent fiange H Will prevent the current from impinging against the inner face of this'fan, assisting rather in the outfiow through perfora- IOO tions e e of the air which has passed the fan, the next flange H will catch and direct the current against the inner face of the other fan D, and the other flaring mouthB will assist in exhausting the air which has passed the last fan. Thus the two fans are made to operate siinultaneously upon the shaft C and to the best possible advantage for the purposes intended.
K K are reservoirs, which may contain a supply of oil for the journals a a, pipes, as at f, having suitable eouplings, as g g, being?r used to connect the reservoirs with the bearings, and the flow of oil being 'facilitated by a wick in the pipef. V
The improved ventilator inay be niounted upon the top or bottom of the caror upon the side, or connected with one of the windowopenings. Wherever located, pi pes may lead to it from the region of the bottom of the car, if required. It has been found in practice to admirably answer the purpose or object of the invention, as previously set forth.
Having now fully described our inventon,
what we claim as new herein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a ventilator of the character herein set forth, the combination of the perforated shell, the interior conical air-directors, the exhaustfan, aud the two driving-fans mounted on the sanie shaft and on opposite sides of the exhaust-fan, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a ventilator of the character herein set forth, the conibination of the exhaustfan, the two driving-fans niounted on the sanie shaft, and the perforated shell having` the fiar ing months, the oppositely-inelined fianges, and the interior conical air-direetors, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two witnesses.
