To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK EITAPENO, of Oneonta, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shipping-Reel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to reels intended more particularly for holding lead pipe in coiled condition and safe from injury during transportation or shipment, but adapted also for holding wire or rope or other products; and the invention has for its object to provide an efficient and durable reel of this character.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts of the shipping-reel, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

I will first describe the shipping-reel with reference to Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, of the drawings, as follows:
The reel comprises two principal parts-the reel proper, A, and the reel-case or protecting-frame B.
The reel A is made with a central shaft, 0,
wooden roller, D, closely fitted around the shaft. Onto the ends of the roller D are fitted the inturned flanges e of opposite metal end plates, E, which are secured by screws or bolts e to the wooden ends or heads F of the reel. The flanges e of the end plates are preferably let in flush with the face or periphery of the roller, and on the outer face of each plate E is formed or fixed a flange or collar, 6', which fits upon the reel-shaft O and is held A series of bolts, G, preferably three in number, are laid in longitudinal grooves d at the periphery of the roller D, and the end parts of the bolts pass within the flanges e of the end plates, E, and project beyond the plates serial No. 231,006. (No model.)
may be inserted to secure a good hold on it prior to winding it upon the reel, and these holesf may or may not extend through the metal end plates, E, of the reel. The bolts G may have a fixed head at one end and a nut at the other end, or nuts may be used at both ends of the bolts. It will be noticed that the passage of the bolts through the grooves d of the roller or drum D of the reel prevents undue twisting or torsional racking of the reel while winding pipe or rope on or paying it off of the reel or during transportation of the reel.
The shaft 0 of the reel A projects through the wooden end or head plates, H H, of the reel case or frame B, and preferably through metal bushings h h, fixed in'the head-plates. These bushings prevent wear of the heads H and assure easy turning of the reel A, and have outside flanges, h, which rest on and are nailed or otherwise fixed to the head-plates. Outside of the bushings, collars I I are fixed to the shaft 0 by pins 6; or they may be otherwise secured, as by screwing the collars upon the shaft. The opposite headplates H H are connected by longitudinally-ranging bars or strips J, which are preferably made of wood,
and are let in flush with the peripheries of the headplates to allow the entire reel structure to be readily rolled along on the head-plates as wheels when handling the reel. The peripheral bars J are connected to and stayed from each other at their centers by cross-pieces or stays K, but one of which need be removed when the pipe or rope or other material is to be wound upon or unwound from the reel A. The head-plates H are provided with holes L, opposite which the heads or nuts h of thereelbolts G may be brought by turning the reel, so as to allow a socket-wrench to be passed through the holes L- for screwing up or tightening the bolts, should they become loose by shrinkage or wear of the parts of the reel, and without taking the reel apart or removing the pipe or rope wound on it.-
The modified form of shipping-reel shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings is in all respects like to receive nuts g, which, when tightened firmly, A
the reel above described, except that in place of the grooved wooden drum or roller D a metal cylinder or drum,M, is used, and the stay-bolts G run through this drum as .elosely as may be to its inner wall or face, and the head-plates E are drawn up tightly to the ends of the drum by nuts 9, and the drum is stayed internally from the reel-shaft G- by a block, m, which is notched at the edge to allow passage of the bolts G. The block m will be secured to preventits turning in the drum by nails m driven through the drum into it, thereby staying the bolts G at thecenter and assisting them in preventing torsional straining or racking of the .inner reel.
The reels may be of any desired size, and make a strong, compact, and elficientpackage for lead pipe, rope, or other material, which will be protected from injury while in transit.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I 1. A shipping-reel made with a roller or cylinder upon which pipe or cordage may be wound, plates or heads at the ends of the roller or cylinder, bolts ranging lengthwise of the roller or cylinder, and tightening-nuts on the bolts outside of the end plates, substantially as herein set forth.
2. In a shippingreel, the reel proper made with a shaft, a roller or cylinder surrounding the shaft, plates fitted at theends of the roller or cylinder, and bolts ranging along the roller of cylinder and provided with tightening'nuts outside of the end plates, substantially as herein set forth.
3. In a shipping-reel, the reel proper made '.with a shaft, a roller or cylinder surrounding the shaft, plates fitted at the ends of the roller or cylinder and provided with inbent flanges overlapping the ends of the roller or cylinder, and tightening-nuts on thebolts outside of the end plates, substantially as herein set forth.
4. In a shipping'reel, the reel proper made with a shaft, a roller, D, fitted thereon and provided with grooves d, plates E at the ends of the roller, and bolts G, resting in the grooves d and having tightening-nuts outside of the end plates, E, substantially as herein set forth. 5. In a shipping-reel, the reel proper made with a shaft, a-roller, D, fitted thereon and provided with grooves d, plates E at the ends of the roller and having flanges e, fitting the roller,andbolts G, resting in the grooves d and having tightening-nuts outside of the end plates, E, substantially as herein set forth.
6. In a shipping-reel, the reel proper made with a roller or cylinder, metal plates E,fitted at the ends thereof, heads F, also fitted at the ends of the roller or cylinder, and to which heads the plates E are fastened, and bolts ranging along the roller or cylinder and having tightening-nuts outside of the end plates, E, substantially as herein set forth.
7. In a shipping-reel, the reel proper made with a shaft,a roller, D, fitted thereon and having grooves d, plates E at the ends of the roller and having flanges e, fitting the roller, heads F, placed inside of the end plates, E, and to which said plates are fastened, and bolts G, placed in the roller-grooves d and having tightening-nuts outside of the end plates, substantially as shown and described.
8. In a shipping-reel, the reel proper made with a shaft, aroller or cylinder, and plates E, fitted to the roller or cylinder and having inturned flanges e, overlapping its ends, and outturned flanges e,fitting the shaft, and bolts G, ranging along the roller or cylinder and through the end plates, E, and having tightening-nuts outside of said plates, substantially as shown and described.
9. In a shipping-reel, the reel-heads made with openingsf at or near the periphery of the drum or cylinder onto which the product is wound, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth. a
10. In a shipping-reel, the combination, with the reel proper and its shaft, of an outer case or frame consisting of heads H H, in which the reel'shaft is journaled, bars J, con neeting the heads, and stays K, fitted between the bars J, substantially as shown and described.
11. In a shippingreel, the combination, with the reel proper provided with longitudinally-ranging nutted bolts, of an outer case or frame provided with openings L in its heads, through which a wrench may be passed for tightening the reel-bolt nuts, substantially as shown and described.
