MACHINE FOR WRAPPING STRIPS FOR USE INTHE MANUFACTURE OF RUGS, &c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,448, dated December 6, 1887.
Application filed January 15, 1887. Serial No. 224.475. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. BRINKER- HOFF, a citizen of the United States, resident at Bueyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Wrapping Strips for use in the Manufacture of Rugs, 850.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a plan view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the-device, taken on the line x a: of Fig. 1, showing the swinging nut, disk, and screw in elevation. Fig. 3 is a rear end elevation of the device. Figs. 4 and 5 are a top and bottom plan view of the table, and Fig. 6 is a detail view. Fig. 7 is a detached view showing the screw and its connections.
My invention consists in improvements in machines for making the wrapped strips used in the manufacture of rugs, mats, and other articles that have upstanding nap formed by sewing the said strips upon a suitable backing, as cloth, and then cutting open the loops thus formed and removing the strips.
The object of the invention is to form the said strips rapidly and evenly, to give them any desired length and breadth, and to wrap them with any suitable tension.
The invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A designates a base, preferably of wood and of general rectangular form, to which is secured a standard-frame, B,near one end thereof.
The'upper part of the standard-frame is formed into a ring, I), to receive and form a bearing for the inner portion, G, of the hollow rotary cylinder G.
c is a circumferential flange around said cylinder, which flange lies against the outer surface of the ring I) and separates the part 0 from the larger outer portion, C of the cylinder.
D D are three equidistant cam-lugs made on the edge of the flanged sleeve 0 fitted within the outer end of the cylinder, which cam-lugs are rounded, as shown in the drawings, and D D are three equidistant cam-surfaces made on the interior of the cylinder near its inner end. The purpose of the said cam lugs and surfaces is hereinafter explained. The inner end of the cylinder lies flush with the inner surface of the ring b, and is provided with a flange, (1, upon which the main pulley E of the machine is secured, the said pulley being grooved around its edge for the accommodation of the driving-cord X, by means of which the pulley E can be driven and the machine actuated from any suitable source of power-- as, for instance, the band-wheel of a sewingmachine.
F is a table, preferably of metal, and provided with the lateral arms ff, the ends of which fitin notches in the rim of the standardframe B, and are secured therein by bolts, so that the table will stand horizontal, with its central part, f between the two arms f entering the cylinder 0, and stands about in the plane of its central diameter. Attached to the under surface of the table, near its outer end, is the swinging screw, G, which .is pivoted about centrally between the depending arms 9, secured to the under surface of the table. The lower and threaded portion of said screw has turning freely on it the rubber disk 9, with rounded edge, and below the disk the thumb-nut gr engages the screw, a part of the not entering the eye of the disk. The lower end of the swinging screw is provided with a hook with which engages one end of a coilspring, 9 the other end of said spring being secured to the base of the machine. The end of the upper and unthreaded portion of the swinging screw has pivoted to its bifurcated end the outer end of the rod h of the feedingblock H. The said block has on each side of its face the vertical flanges h, provided with the teeth or serrations h, and its lower end, If, is rounded,so as to cause less friction with the interior of the cylinder as the latter revolves aroundit. J is a guide-plate removably attached to the upper surface of the table, and having its side edges, j, bent over to hold the paper strips X, upon which the thread is wound,as hereinafter explained.
K is a presser-plate secured to the top of the table above the guide-plate, and having its inner end, which corresponds with the inner end of the part f of the table,bent down thereon, as shown. In this bent-down portion 7a are the slots k, immediately above the slots 2' in the partf of the table. Theslots are for the purpose of preventing the presser-plate from interfering with the action of the feeding-block.
It is a spring-bar lying transversely across the part K of the presser-plate, having one end attached thereto and the other end free. This bar holds the thread before the winding begins.
\Vhen the machine is in operation, the rotation of the pulley E revolves the cylinder C and the cam-lugs D thereon, which bear successively against the rubber disk 9 and move the same outwardly, the said disk being moved inwardly by means of a spring, causing the swinging screw G to vibrate and the feedrod h and feed-block H to reciprocate, the toothed flanges h moving in'the slots Z. To increase the movement of said flange the rubber disk is moved upward on the swinging screw by means of the thumb-nut below it, so that it engages against the lugs D as they pass. The rounded lower end, ha, of the feed-block H engages against the inner surface of the cylinder, and in passing over the cam-elevations D it lifts the toothed flanges in the slots z. The parts are so arranged that when the flanges are so lifted they are also moved inward by the action of the cam-lugs D, being drawn backward when they are lowered. The spring besides allowing free motion to the screw G, retracts the feed-rod by causing the screw to assume a vertical position.
L is the spool-spindle frame, composed of the rings Z Z and the opposite arms Z, uniting the same. The portion Z of the spool L rests against the forward end of cylinder 0 and the front face of the pulley E and is secured thereto. Each arm Z has near one edge and adjacent to the ring I a guide-opening, Z for the The ring Z has secured to its edge a guide device, hereinafter described, and to its side opposite the pulley E the hollow cylindrical spool-spindle M, having the circumferential grooves m near its free end.
N is the spool, composed of the cylindrical body and the end flanges, n n. The flange n lies adjacent to the ring Z and has in its edge a notch, if. The spool rotates easily on its spindle, except when clamped thereon.
O is a combined guide and clamping device, composed of the rod 0, secured to the ring Z at its junction with one of the arms Z and the angular clamping piece or dog 0, having open- 7 ings in its arms, so as to slide and turn freely on the rod. The outer end of the rod 0 is ringshaped to form a guide-loop, 0", for the thread or yarn.
o is a coiled spring surrounding the rod 0 between the guide-loop and the outer arm of the dog 0'. The said arm has its end bent at right angles inward, so as to fit in the notch n of the flange a, and when thus engaged the spool is clamped so as to turn with its spindle. To unclamp it, the dog ois raised against the spring 0 till clear of the notch, and then turned on the rod 0, so as to be free of the flange n.
P is a spring tension-plate having one end bent upon itself to slip on the outer edge of the spool-spindle and a bent-in portion, 1), which fits in the groove m when the plate is in place to retain it. The other end of the plate is bent upon itself to form the spring 1), which presses against the outer surface of the flange a and keeps the spool from turning too freely on the spindle. Q is a spring-catch on the inner side of the flange a, near the body, and serving to hold the end of the yarn when winding the same on the spool.
The first part of the operation of the machine is winding the thread oryarn on the spool, and is as follows: The spool being clamped on its spindle, as described, the end of the yarn from a ball or swift is secured by the catch Q and the machine set in motion,
winding the yarn on the spool as it turns with its spindle. In this part of the operation the spool is'preferably turned toward the operator,
so that the yarn winds first on the under side thereof.
Thespool being full,the second part of the operation is performed as follows: A strip of thick paper or light pasteboard is laid upon the guide-plate J, (which may be made in different widths,) so as to be held by the edgesj, and its end passed under andslightly beyond the bentdown spring portion k of the presser-plate. The spool is then unclamped, as described, and the end of the yarn passed under the spring-bar If, to be held thereby when the yarn begins to unwind. The machine is then set in motion and the yarn wound on the strip as the latter is fed into the machine by the described feeding mechanism. The yarn from the spool is first carried through the guide-loop 0' and then through a guide-opening, Z before being engaged'by the spring-bar.
In winding the first few turns pass, over the end ofthe yarn, so as to hold it in place when pulled from beneath the spring-bar by the advance of the strip. The strip may be of any desired length,and yarns of several colors may be wound alternately or in succession thereon. When the strips are finished, they may be stitched on the base-cloth longitudinally, either centrally or near the edges, so as to make single or doubleloops andloops of varyinglength, and, if desired, tape may be stitched upon them or within them to give the union strength.
The stitching is done on an ordinary sewingmachine, and the paper is released when the loops are cut, so as to be readily removed.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a machine for the purpose specified, the combination of the spool and devices, substantiall y as described, for carrying the spool, with the slotted table the hollow rotating cy1- inder having on its end the cam-lugs to reciprocate the feed-block and on its interior the cam-surfaces to lift the feed-block, the adjustable rubber disk to engage the cam-lugs, the nut, the swinging screw, the feed-rod pivoted thereto, and the feed-block provided with the serrated flange operating through the slots on the table, and the spring for returning the feed-block, substantially as specified.
2. In a machine for the purpose specified, the combination of the spool and devices,substantially as described, for carrying the spool, with the slotted table, the hollow rotating cylinder provided on its end with the camlugs and its interior with the cam-surfaces, the adjustable rubber disk to engage the cam-lugs,
the nut, the swinging screw, the spring for moving the same inwardly, the feed -block connected therewith by the feed-rod and provided with the serrated flanges operating through the slots in the table, the detachable guide-plate, the presser -plate slotted at its end above the slots in the table, and the spring-bar to hold the end of the yarn, substantially as specified.
3. In a machine for the purpose specified, the combination of the spool and devices,substantially as described, for carrying the spool, with the standard-frame B, the table F, secured thereto and provided with the slots i in its central part, f, and guides I on its under surface, the rotating cylinder G,provided with 4. the combination of the feeding mechanism,-
substantially as described,the retaining springbar, the spoolspindle, and the pulley by which the same are turned to operate the winding and feeding devices, substantially as specified.
5. In a machine for the purpose specified,
the combination of the feed mechanism, substantially as described, with the retaining spring-bar, the spool-spindle frame having the guide-openings in its arms and secured to the face of the pulley, the spool'spindle secured to said frame, the spool turning freely on the spindle, and the spring clamping-plate hearing on the flange of the spool and engaging in a circumferential groove in the spindle, sub stantially as specified.
6. In a machine for the purpose specified, the combination of the feeding mechanism, substantially as described, with the retaining spring-bar, the spool-spindle frame having the guide-openings in its arms, the spool-spindle, the spool turning freely thereon, and the combined clamping and guiding device composed of the bar 0, having the guide loop 0", the spring 0, and dog 0, to engage a notch in the flange of the spool, substantially as specified.
