Be it known that I, WILLIAM ROEMER, a citizen ofthe United States,residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag or Satchel Frames and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to facilitate the construction of bags or satchels and to provide a bag of greater neatness of appearance and one having a more perfect operation of the jaws thereof, as will be set forth.

The invention consists in the improved vbag or satchel, and in the arrangement and combination of parts thereof, substantially aswill be hereinafter set forth, and finally be embodied in the clauses of the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures of the two sheets, Figure l, Sheet 1, is a plan of a portion of a bag or Satchel, showing the jaws thereof wide open to illustrate the hinge-joints by which said jaws are connected. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, taken through line x. Fig.'3, Sheet 2, is an elevation of a bagframe in its closed relation. Fig. 4 is an end View of the saine in connection with a portion of a bag-body. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of certain hinge-portions of the sections of a bag-frame. Figs. 7, 8, 9, 10, and 1l are detail views of a hinge-piece adapted to receive said hinge portions of said sections; and Figs. 12, 13, and 14 are detail views of a foot-piece adapted to cover the hinge to protect the same.

The invention relates more particularly to a detail construction of the hinge and said footpiece.

In said drawings, A A( are the frame-sections of a bag, which in general construction are not novel. b is the body of said bag.

c c are hingepieces, to which the sectionsA A of the frame are hinged, and d is a strap which passes across the bottom of the bag and from one hinge to theother. The said hingepieces are riveted directly to the bottom plate, c', of the foot-piece by means of a rivet, c, the body-leather or other material of the bag being cut away to allow said hinge portion c to rest directly on said plate, by which arrangement the jaws or sections of the frame may be quickly secured together and the bag subsequently arranged in place with neatuess and ease.

rIhe hinge-piece c consists of a plate (shown in Fig. 9) the opposite ends of which are bent up at about the points indicated in dotted lines in sai-d Fig. 9 to form ears c, Fig. 8. The angular jaw-sections where they engage said plate c are bent, as indicated particularly in Figs. 5 and 6, one flange, a', of which is cut square, as at a, vso that when said section is raised to its closed position the said squarecut iiange will serve as a stop which in the outer jaw-section engages the plate c' of the foot-piece, and the innerjaw-section engages the bottoni portion or plate of the hinge-piece c, the said jaw-sections being thus in their closed movements prevented from passing beyond or much beyond a vertical relation to the said plate c and bottom portion, as will be understood. In the outer jaw-sections the said stop-flange lies on the outer side of the outer ear, c3, of the plate, as shown in Fig. 1, and that of the iunerjawsection lies on the inner of the said ears, as shown in said Fig. 1. In both of these constructions I avoid the' use of a peculiarly-irregular hinge-piece, such as shown in a prior application for patent, Serial No. 213,850, and secure a hinge-joint of greater strength. In the present device the jaw-sections alone are brought into hinged relation tothe plate c, and the inlays c are simply brought to a point close to the hinge without entering into operative vrelation thereto. The second iiange, ai, of the angular jaw-section is turned, as at a", to pass around the hinged pin 0*, said hinge pin passing through both ears of the piece c, as in Fig. 11, through the eye a", formed by turning the extremity of the iiange, and through the hole a5, Fig. 6, formed in each square or angular flange a of the jawsection.

It will be observed upon viewing Fig. l that the stop-ange a3 ofthe sections A A are not in line, but the flange of the smaller section lies in a line within or back of the line of the outer IOO section. To make a neat joint between the outer faces of both of said anges a' and the end plate, d', of the foot-piece, and to avoid any unsightly gaps or openings between said parts, I have provided said end plate, d', at the lateral edges thereof with inwardly-projecting ribs d2 d3, one of which, d3, extends in- Ward toward the face of the jaw-section farther than the other, the rib or projection having the greater extension corresponding with the inner jaw, so that the edges of said inwardlyextending ribs will close to their respective iange, making a neat joint when the bag is viewed from either direction. The hollow or recess (1*, formed between the ribs of the said end plate, not only lengthens the casting,but serves as a receptacle for the projecting ends of the hinge-pins or rivets c4. The cross-bar dabuts against the inner face of the under ears, o3, of the hinge-pieces and is riveted to the bottom plates, c', of the foot-piece, the body-leather or material of the bag passing between. By this construction the body-leather or material may be of any desired thickness without affecting the parallel relation of the end plates, d', of the foot-pieces to the outer faces of the flanges a' of the jaw-sections.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. In a bag-frame substantially such as described, the combinatiomwith asuitable hinge'- piece, of sections A A', having ianges a' a, one of which is turned to form an eye, a4, and the other of which is cut square at a3, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In combination, inabag-frame, the hingepiece c, having ears c3, adapted to receive the jaw-sections A A', and a foot-piece having a plate, c', the said hinge-piece being riveted directly upon the said plate c', substantially as set forth. f

3. In combination, in a bag-frame, the sections A A', having flanges a a', one of which is turned at a4, hinge-pieces c, having ears c2 o3, the unge a' of the section A lying against the inner side of the ears @and the flange c' of the section A' lying on the outer side of the said ear a3, and suitable hingepins or rivets, substantially as set forth.

4. In combination with the hinged jaw-sections A A', the foot-piece c, secured at the pivotal ends of said sections and having the end plate, d', with one lateral edge extending inward toward the outer face of the said jaw-section farther than the other, substantially as set forth.

5. In combinationl with sections A A' of a bag-frame suitably pivoted together, a crossbar, d, and a foot-piece secured to said cross-bar and having an end plate extending upward at the side of said sections and provided with ribs d2 d3, one having a greater inward projection than the other, substantially as set forth.

6. In combination with the jaw-sections A A', hinge-piece c, rivets 0404, foot-pieces having plates c and a', and rod or bar d, passing from one plate c to the other, but not passing beneath the hingepieces c, substantially as set forth.
