Abstract
A water purifying apparatus comprising a body portion supporting a tank containing a plurality of hollow filter elements, the body portion having an inlet port adapted to be connected to a source of untreated water and a discharge port adapted to be connected to the system to be supplied with water, the body portion containing valves which may be manually controlled to direct the untreated water either through the filter elements into the discharge port, or directly to the discharge port.

[56] References Cited 6 Claims, 5 Drawing Figures UNITED STATES PATENTS 1,632,960 6/1927 Giese 210/454 X WATER PURIFYING APPARATUS It is among the objects of the invention to provide a water purifying apparatus which .is relatively simple in construction and may readily be incorporated in a household water system, which apparatus will efficiently filter impurities from the untreated water, and which may readily be cleaned, without interrupting flow of untreated water to the household water system.
According to the invention these objects are accomplished by the arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter described and more particularly recited in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings in which are shown one of various possible embodiments of the several features of the invention;
FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of the apparatus,
partly in cross section;
FIG. 2 is a sectional view taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1 showing one position of the valve means of the apparatus;
FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 2 showing another position of the valve means of the apparatus;
FIGS. 4 and 5 are diagrammatic views corresponding to the valve positions shown in FIGS. 2 and 3 respectively.
Referring now to the drawings, the purifier consists of a body 1 (FIGS. 1, 2 and a on which are attached two cartridges 2 and 3, which consist preferably of sili-. con discs, stacked and locked one upon the other. These filter cartridges are arranged in a tank 4 closed by a removable lid 5 held tightly by a nut 6 screwed on a centering rod 7 rigid with the body of the apparatus.
The body 1, which has an elongated form, comprises two lateral inlet and outlet orifices 8 and 9 for the water. These orifices, placed on either side of the body, are threaded to facilitate connection to the pipe line.
The body 1 has on the inside baffles l0, l1, l2 and 13 which are in communication with each other through ports 14, 15, 16 and which can be closed or opened at will by means of a sliding stem 17 provided with two valves 18, 19 arranged in line. Thus, when the stem 17 is displaced in one direction by means of a knob 20 accessible from the outside, the ports 14 and 16 (FIGS. 2 and 4) are closed to obtain the direct passage of untreated water into the water system, while in the other direction, port is closed and port 16 (FIGS. 3 and 5) is opened to force the untreated water to flow through the purifying tank 4 in order to obtain purified water in the water system. Cartridge 2 is attached at 21 at the outlet of baffle 11, while cartridge 3 is secured at 22 at the inlet of baffle 12, that is, at the outlet of the purifier.
It should be pointed out that, unlike valve 19 which acts only in one direction to close port 16, valve 18 must be operative on both faces (or on the outerfaces of the two coupled valves) in order to close port 14 simultaneously when valve 19 closes port 16 (FIG. 4) or to close port 15 simultaneously when said valve 19 has opened port 16 (FIG. 5).
The above arrangement permits cleaning of the tank and the filter cartridges as well as replacement of the latter without having to shut off the distribution of water, which is then untreated.
The arrangement above described facilitates the charging or replacement of deodorizing and/or softening products in the tank, such as granulated active carbon, phosphates or the like, depending on the quality of the original water.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A water purifier apparatus comprising a body portion having a main inlet port to which a source of untreated water may be connected and a main discharge port to which the system to be supplied with water may be connected, a secondary inlet port and a secondary outlet port, valve means controlling said ports, said valve means having a first position connecting said main inlet port directly to said main discharge port and closing both said secondary port and a second position cutting off connection directly between said main ports and connecting said main inlet port to said secondary inlet port and connecting said secondary discharge port to said main discharge port, a filter tank mounted on said body portion, a pair of hollow cylindrical filter elements in said tank each having one end closed and the other end open and in communication respectively with said secondary inlet port and said secondary outlet port, each filter element having a wall defining a filter through which fluid may pass, whereby when said valve means is in the first position the untreated water will be supplied directly'to the system and when in the second position filtered water will be supplied to the system.
2. The apparatus set forth in claim 1 in which manu-- ally operated means is provided to actuate said valve means.
3. The apparatus set forth in claim 1 in which the main ports lie in a horizontal plane and the secondary ports lie in a vertical plane at right angles to the main ports.
4. The apparatus set forth in claim 1 in which said filter tank is mounted on said body portion and rises vertically therefrom, said main ports lie in a horizontal plane parallel to the plane of said body portion and said secondary ports lie in a vertical plane at right angles to the main ports and are in communication with the lower end of said filter tank.
5. The apparatus set forth in claim 4 in which said filter elements are mounted at their lower end on said body portion and rise vertically in said tank, whereby fluid flowing through said secondary inlet port will flow through one of said filter elements and the wall thereof into said tank and then through the wall of said other filter element through the latter and through said secondary discharge port.
6. The apparatus set forth in claim 1 in which said main ports lie in a horizontal plane and the secondary ports lie in a vertical plane at right angles to the main ports, said body portion has a longitudinal bore therethrough closed at one end and having an opening at its other'end, said main ports being in communication with said longitudinal bore, said longitudinal bore has a first annular valve seat between said main inlet port and said main discharge port, a second annular valve seat between said main inlet port and said secondary inlet port, and a third annular valve seat between said main discharge port and secondary discharge port, said valve means comprises a valve stem slidably mounted in said longitudinal bore and having one end extending through the end of the latter, a first and second valve member mounted on said stem and movable against said first valve.
Claims (6)
1. A water purifier apparatus comprising a body portion having a main inlet port to which a source of untreated water may be connected and a main discharge port to which the system to be supplied with water may be connected, a secondary inlet port and a secondary outlet port, valve means controlling said ports, said valve means having a first position connecting said main inlet port directly to said main discharge port and closing both said secondary port and a second position cutting off connection directly between said main ports and connecting said main inlet port to said secondary inlet port and connecting said secondary discharge port to said main discharge port, a filter tank mounted on said body portion, a pair of hollow cylindrical filter elements in said tank each having one end closed and the other end open and in communication respectively with said secondary inlet port and said secondary outlet port, each filter element having a wall defining a filter through which fluid may pass, whereby when said valve means is in the first position the untreated water will be supplied directly to the system and when in the second position filtered water will be supplied to the system.
2. The apparatus set forth in claim 1 in which manually operated means is provided to actuate said valve means.
3. The apparatus set forth in claim 1 in which the main ports lie in a horizontal plane and the secondary ports lie in a vertical plane at right angles to the main ports.
4. The apparatus set forth in claim 1 in which said filter tank is mounted on said body portion and rises vertically therefrom, said main ports lie in a horizontal plane parallel to the plane of said body portion and said secondary ports lie in a vertical plane at right angles to the main ports and are in communication with the lower end of said filter tank.
5. The apparatus set forth in claim 4 in which said filter elements are mounted at their lower end on said body portion and rise vertically in said tank, whereby fluid flowing through said secondary inlet port will flow through one of said filter elements and the wall thereof into said tank and then through the wall of said other filter element through the latter and through said secondary discharge port.
6. The apparatus set forth in claim 1 in which said main ports lie in a horizontal plane and the secondary ports lie in a vertical plane at right angles to the main ports, said body portion has a longitudinal bore therethrough closed at one end and having an opening at its other end, said main ports being in communication with said longitudinal bore, said longitudinal bore has a first annular valve seat between said main inlet port and said main discharge port, a second annular valve seat between said main inlet port and said secondary inlet port, and a third annular valve seat between said main discharge port and secondary discharge port, said valve means comprises a valve stem slidably mounted in said longitudinal bore and having one end extending through the end of the latter, a first and second valve member mounted on said stem and movable against said first valve.
