Be it known that I, GEORGE A. FULLER'ION,

0f Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State 0f Massachusetts. have invented a new and 'useful Impr0vernent in Oombined Bottles and Stoppers, 0f which the following is a specification, reference being had t0 the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 ,is an elevation 0f my eombineld bottle and stopper with the stopper in its highest position. Fig. 2 is a view 0t' my 00mbined bottle and stopper with the stopper foreed horne. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal secti0n -0f the same. Figs. 4 and 5 are views of the band, and Fig. 6 is a side view 0f the stopper and its bai1 detached. y

The bail B is a malleable casting, and is so sbaped {hat its ends may be sprang apart sufficiently far t0 allow them t0 be passed over the rirn 0f the bottle and sapped into the holes in the band D and int0 the grooves a.

The main advantage of my device is its cheapness 0f construction and the ease 0f app1ying it t0 the bottle, and detaching it and reapplying it when the stopper B requires removal, for although I have shown the stopper B as of rubber, it is for s0n1e nses made of cork and reqnires renewal fr01n time t0 time.

In appl5 ing my device, the band D is first piaced aroundthe neek of the b0ttle, With its end holes in line,'and the bail B is then spread (by p1iers 01 otherwise) so that its inwardly- 0 turned ends will snap int0 placetbat is, through the holes in band D and int0 the groov0s a. 'Ihis is done, preferably, when tbe band D, stoppen B, and bail oceupy the position sh0wn in Fig. 1. 'Ihe bottleis then ready t0 be filled, and when filled the stoppen B is forced home and the bail B turned until its inwardly-turned ends engage the shoulders a as in other devices of this class.

I am aware that swingstoppers are 01d, and d0 not broadly claim a stoppen held t0 a b0ttle by a bail and grooves in the neck 0f the b0ttle, but lin1it my clain1 t0 the novel features of 1ny constructiou bymeans' 0f whicb I am enabled to pr0duce a swingstopper far cheaper and more readily applied than any heretofore known and yet equal t0 any now in the market.

Wben the c0rk stopper is t0 be replaced, the bail B is sprang open far enough t0 allow it t0 be rexnoved from the bottle. The riveted end 0f the cork spindle is cut 0ff with cnttingnippers, the 01d cork stopper and its spindle removed, and a new cork Stopper and spindle put in its plane, the upper end 0f the spindle being riveted to connect it With the bail. The bail is then Sprung open again and allowed to snap back int0 place on the bottle.

I am aware 0f Patents N0. 231,451 to Schulz, August 24, 1880, N0. 266,727 t0 Schulz, October 31, 1882, and N0. 353,069 t0 Judd, November 23, 1886, and disclaim all that is shown in them. My invention differs radieally from the invention set forth in these patents, because my band D i s made of a strip whose ends are lapped and perforated t0 receive one 7 5 0f the inwardly-turned ends of my bail, Whereby the band is kept in h0op form, the inwardly-turned end 0f my bail being in another perforation in band D. By this c0nstruotion myband, Stopper, and bail are secured t0 the bottle witb an eeonorny 0f labor, and are readily removed from the b0ttle when neeessary, as is frequei1tly the case.

In Schulzs Patent N0. 231,451 the band does not encirc1e the neck 0f the b0ttie, and is tied in place by means 0f a string or wire, (marked h in the patent.) Schulzs Patent N0. 266,727 and Judds Patent N0. 353,069 neither Show nor suggest a band formed by lapping the perforated ends 0f the piece 0f Whi0h the band is formed, and the band cannot be removed fr0xn the neck of the bottle0r jar without being cut 0x broken, 01 elsewithout breaking the bottle 01 jar.
