Definitions

  • JOHAN E. L. C. HUYSKENS b/fiW AGENT gas discharge lamp which comprises a tubular glass lam'p vessel which is sealed on at least one end by a pinch seal, in which vessel one or more filaments or electrodes and possibly a reflecting screen are arranged which are secured to stiff current conductors and/or supporting members passed through a common support and each secured at their one end to metal sealing foils sealed in the pinch seal, the support being secured in a few places of its circumference to the side wall of the lamp vessel.
  • a lamp is described in the previously filed Dutch patent application 7,004,939.
  • the conductors extending between the support and the pinch seal sometimes turn out to be subject to a rather large mechanical stress which sometimes results in fracture. This may be the case, for example, when during the pinching operation the squeezing members are not moved truly perpendicularly relative to the longitudinal dimension of an elongate support. In that case a pinch seal is obtained the pinch surfaces of which can assume a slightly twisted position relative to the said support. This is also occurs when, in the case of an elongate support, the lead-in members in said support are not all of them located in the same plane.
  • this sometimes occurring drawback can be avoided by not fully embedding the foils in the pinch seal, but causing them to extend to in the lamp space, the connection place between a curv rent conductor or supporting member and a foil being located outside the pinch seal. It has been found that by arranging the foils in this manner they can better withstand the occurring forces of deformation, due to their flexibility, than foils which are embedded-entirely in the pinch seal.
  • FIG. 1 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of a halogen twin filament lamp
  • FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line lI-ll of FIG. 1.
  • Reference numeral 1 denotes a lamp vessel of quartz glass in which a support 3 having continuous stiff current conductors 5, 7 and. 9 of molybdenum is sealed to the re-entrant wall parts 11 and 13 obtained by deformation. Filaments l5 and 17 of tungsten are secured to said conductors. The filament 15 is welded in addition to a reflecting screen 19 of molybdenum.
  • the sealing foils 23, 25 and 27 which are normally incorporated in the pinch seal 21, project in the lamp space between the support 3 and the pinch seal 21 in the manner shown, namely over such a length that the place of the weld between the conductor and the foil is likewise present in said space. It has been found that in a formed pinch seal the projecting flexible foil parts then take up a rather large force of deformation; the stresses occurring as a result of the performed pinching operation then produces a smaller reject percentage due'to fracture than in the case of a'foil sealed entirely in the pinch seal.
  • the invention may also be used in gas discharge lamps provided with a pinch seal in which a support secured to the lamp vessel does not comprise a filament but one or more electrodes.
  • the lamp comprises a tubular glass lamp vessel which is sealed on at least one end by a pinch seal.
  • a transverse common support is positioned within the lamp vessel and separated from the pinch seal by a lamp space.
  • the vessel has at least one electrode of the discharge lamp being secured to acurrent conductor at one end thereof, the current conductor passing through the common support and being connected to a metal sealing foil at the other end thereof.
  • the common support is secured to the side wall of the lamp vessel in at least two places of its circumference.
  • the foil secured in the pinch seal extends into the lamp space and the place of connection between a current conductor and foil is located within the lamp space.
  • a filament lamp which comprises a tubular glass lamp vessel which is sealed on at least one end by a pinch seal, said vessel having at least one filament of said lamp secured to a current conductor at'one end thereof, a transverse common support being positioned within said lamp vessel and separated from said pinch seal by a lamp space, said current conductor passing through said common support and being connected to a metal sealing foil at the other end thereof, the common support being secured to the side wall of the lamp vessel in at least two places of its circumference, wherein the foil secured in the pinch seal extends into the lamp space, the place of connection between a current conductor and a foil being located within the lamp space.
  • said conducting member is also a supporting member.
  • a gas discharge lamp which comprises a tubular glass lamp vessel which is sealed on at least one end by a pinch seal, a transverse common support being positioned within said lamp vessel and separated from said pinch seal by a lamp space, said vessel having at least one electrode of said discharge lamp being secured to a current conductor at one end thereof, said current conductor passing through said common support and being connected to a metal sealing foil at the other end thereof, the common support being secured to the side wall of the lamp vessel in at least two places of its circumference, wherein the foil secured in the pinch seal extends into the lamp space, the place of connection between a current conductor and a foil being located within the lamp space.
