UNITED STATES ATENT QFFICEO CHESTER W. FOYVLER, OF EASTLAKE, MICHIGAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,520, dated November 22, 1887.
Application filed July 6, 1887. Serial No: 243,566. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHESTER W. FOWLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eastlake, in the county of Manistee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed lVater Heaters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to feed-water heaters of that class which are located in the space back of the boiler and supply water to the boiler as hot or nearly as hot as the water in the boiler, and has for its object to simplify the construction and produce a compact arrangement of parts, whereby the heat from the waste products of combustion is utilized to the best possible advantage and a space is left in the heater above the water-line, into which the live steam is injected and the water sprayed. Ordinarily the space in the rear of the boiler is covered over by a fire-arch or a pan. \Vhen the boiler-flues are repaired, it is necessary to remove said arch, which involves considerable expense, and if the pan be used instead of the arch it soon rusts tint, and, besides, considerable heat is lost by evaporation. These objections are obviated by my construction, which also aims to maintain the feed-water at or near the same temperature of the water in the boiler or battery of boilers, thereby separating all foreign matter from and purifying the water previous to its entrance into the boiler.
The improvements consist in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, which will be presently described, claimed, and shown in the annexed drawing, which is a perspective view, parts being broken away, of an organization or plant of boilers embodying my invention. 7
The spraying of the water in my heater keeps the boiler-connections, boilers, muddrum, and heater of so nearly the same temperature as to prevent unequal expansion, and consequenteracks and leaks. The water being forced into the heater, runs into the muddrum by force of gravity, and thus supplies the boilers. The steam-generator A, having the steam-drum B, is suitably incased by the brick-work (J, having the usual smoke-space,
The steam-generator 6c to all and is placed over the series of boilers and extends at right angles totheir length. The feed-water heater extends across the entire length of the space in the rear of the boilers, which is from end boiler to end boiler,
and is placed opposite the upper ends of the boilers, so as to be above the dues and not be in the way and interfere with the ready cleaning of said fiues. The mud-drum G is located at a lower level than the Water-heater E, and is connected with the latter by pipe H, having check-valve h. The upper end of the pipe H connects with the watenheater E at a short distance from its top, thereby leaving a steamspace, 6, in the upper portion of said feedwater heater, which is supplied with steam from the steam-d rum B by pipe F. The water is supplied to the feed-water heater in a spray or finejets by the spray or perforated pipe I, located within and extending the whole length of the steamspace c in the water-heater E, which is provided with asuitable gage to register the pressure and height of water.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1. The combination of the steanrgenerator, the steam-drum, the feed-water heater located in the rear of the steanrgenerator and closing the smoke-space, and haying a portion extended above the top of the steam-generator to form a steam-space in its upper portion, which is connected with the steam-drum, the spray-pipe located in said steam-space in the feed-water heater, and the mud-drum conneeted with the feed-water heater about on a level with the top of the steam-generator, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the series of boilers water-heater, the mud'drum, and the pipe arranged side by side and closed in, leaving a havingacheck-valveconnectingthe mud-drum smoke-space in the rear of the series of boilers, and the feed-water heater, substantially as and the feed-waterheater arranged opposite thetop for the purpose specified. r
5 of the boilers and closing said smoke-space, In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in and provided with a steam-space above the presence of two witnesses. tops of the boilers, the steam-drum common to all the boilers and connected with said CHESTER FOWLER steam-space in the feed-water heater by pipe Witnesses:
to F, the spray feed-pipe located in and extend- S. W. FOWLER,
ing the whole length of the steam-space of the FRANK L. FowLER.
