Description

(No Model.)
J. T. SENTENEY.
PLOW.
Patented Nov. 22, 1887.
YIIIIIIJ'A UNITED STATES PATENT GEETCE.
JOHN THOMAS SENTENEY, OF BLOOKSBURG, CALIFORNIA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,489, dated November 22, 1887.
Serial No. 240,713. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN Tnonas SENTE- NEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blocksburg, in the county of Humboldt and State of California, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to plows of that class which have reversible plowshares, and are designed to plow across the field in each direction, making parallel furrows, and turning the earth in the same direction. The plowshares of such plows are reversed at the end of a furrow previous to returning, and are held in their changed position by suitable catches, all of which are more or less objectionable, because of a too great number of parts, easily gotten out of repair, inconvenient of operation, or some such similar objection.
The present invention has for its object to obviate all objections against prior devices, and provide a simple, compact, and efficient means for holding the plowshare when reversed, and which is convenient of operation for releasing the plowshare, and engaging it,
and which is not liable to get out of repair.
The improvement consists in the novel and peculiar construction and combination of parts, which will be more fully hereinafter set forth, claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figurel is a perspective view ofa plow embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a detail seetional view about on the line X X of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow, showing the plowshare reversed by dotted lines; Fig. 3, a top view of the front portion ofthe standard and the lock-bolt carried thereby, and Fig. 4 a sectional detail view on the line YY of Fig. 1.
The plow beams A, handles B, reversible plowshare C, landside-bars D, and standard E are old and well-known constructions and arrangements, and are shown simply to illustrate the application of my invention.
The upper end of the front portion, E, of the standard is extended to the front and rear, forming bearings e and e, which bear against the under side of the beam, and is held thereto by the keeper F, and the yoke f, seated in a groove or recess in one of the bearings and held to the keeper by the nuts f.
The catch or look for fastening the plowshare in either of its adjusted positions is composed of the rockshaft G, journaled in bearinge, and having hook-shaped heads g,whiol1 are adapted to be turned down and engage with the landside-bars D. The heads are one width, and are larger than the shaft to overlap the sides of the bearing 6', and prevent any longitudinal movement of said shaft. To facilitate the mounting of the shaft the bearing 6 is provided with a removable cap portion, 6 between which and the bearing proper, e, the shaft isjournaled. The arm H, extending rearwardly from the rock-shaft, terminates in an eye, It, to which the lowerend of the operating-rod Iis loosely connected. This rod eX- tends upward within convenient reach of the driver, and is held to one of the handles by keeper 6. A movement of rod I up or down rotates rock-shaft G and engages or disengages its head from the landside-bar of the plowshare, whichever is desired.
The rock-shaft, the hook-shaped heads, and the arm, for the sake of economy, will be made ofa single casting. However, I do not restrict myself to such construction, as it is evident that they may be made separate and secured together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, with the plow-beam and the reversible plowshare,of the rock-shaft having hook-shaped ends journaled transversely of the beam, and means, substantially as described, for operating said rock-shaft for locking the plowshare in either position, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the plow beam, the standard having the upper end ofils front portion extended front and rear, formingbearings which are grooved, the yoke seated in the groove of one of the bearings, and the clip embracing the beam and held to the yoke by ICO and extending within convenient reach, and the reversible plowshare having landsidebars, substantially as and 'for the purpose specified. I 5
In testimony whereof I afifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN THOMAS SENTENEY.
